My dad bought one to resell An 85’ f250 4wd with a dump upfit low mileage never seen winter hoping I can buy it off him & throw a webasto heater to fix cold start issues in winter, I love these trucks so much I’ve been eyeing it so much lately 😂

Just bought a 84. 7.3. dude couldnt get it the motor to turn over, unplugged the injectors and got a 10ft cheater bar for 20 minutes. turned it over and driving it around still. bought it for 800 bucks

i had a beater 86 6.9 i got it for a grand at 275,000, and pushed its limits all the time just to see how dependable theses truck are and i made it to 320,000 before the motor started losing compression. it still runs! but..... it gets 2mpg. there over all good trucks just get a 6.9 after 85 do to the poor block castings, all idi"s have cold starting issues but retarding the pump timing and turning it up a few flats help a lot along with good return lines, with all that done i had no problem starting first cycle in 27 degree weather!

What part of OR you at? My home state. Had an 84 non turbo in my younger years. Traded it for a Cherokee that turned out to have fried rings. Worst mistake I ever made as far as vehicles go.

How is the exhaust set up on your truck? I hear so many of these IDIs that sound like gasser engines in the higher RPM band. I HATE that sound. Yours sounds like how I'd expect a diesel to sound. I've got a C-600 Cabover that I'd like to swap a 7.3 IDI into but if I can't figure out how to make it sound like a diesel 100% of the time, I won't be going that route.

I assume that’s the t19 4spd? What’s your diff ratios? Does that combo let you cruise comfortably at, say, 75mph and if so what are your rpms?

My truck has the same setup, turbo, t19 and everything, I have 3:55 gears which are standard in these trucks and with 37 inch tires I do 70 at 2,200 rpm. when I had 33s to do 75 it took 2500rpm.

This has heat and air. On these bullnose trucks, 80-86, if it has dash vents it came with factory AC. My crewcab, sadly, has no factory AC. I'm on the hunt for a complete dash with vents and everything needed to swap AC in though. Luckily its not humid here.

@@FordGuy100 keep in mind there's two different systems, factory A/C and Dealer A/C, one is added in at the dealer ship and the other is factory. Factory A/C has a different air box and the evaporator in the engine bay and the heater core in the cab, and I think 1 blower, dealer A/C has a second blower and uses a weird airbox setup like heat only trucks

I just got an 85 6.9 and when you moved what was your average MPG

So I towed a 6000 lb trailer back, and we cruised at 65-70 mph. Fuel mileage was about 14 overall (less in the mountainous areas). Not great, but not awful either, especially since 4th gear is direct. No problems holding speed up hills.

FordGuy100 have you seen they make a split shift so it makes your 4 speed a 8 speed with direct and high speed

Yeah, the US gear overdrive is probably what you are thinking. Theres gear vendors too, but those can't split every gear cause they have a minimum speed to come on. I would like to get something because I like the T19 more than the ZF, but I haven't found anything cheap enough yet. Some guys have put brownie boxes out of old medium duty trucks into them too. Kinda a pain though.

For sure. Depending on how fast you drive they don't get that bad of mileage tbh. I think my best tank was 19.7 mpg but I was cruising at 60 mph and taking it easy. What transmission do you have?

ATS, Hypermax, and Banks along with a few smaller companies made aftermarket kits that were fairly popular back in the day. There's at least one company today making their own kits, R&D diesel out of Washington.

R&D is the best but his parts require a little firewall bending, Banks still sells the Sidewinder and and Hypermax still makes its pulse tune system. Even base systems will give you 50% more power while R&D can more than double it.

With a t19 they get about 15 not towing, with a c6 they get 12 not towing, with a zf5 they get around 18-20 hwy not towing

Does it even have a tach? alot of these old manuals ford made dont. I have a mid 90s ranger and it doesn't. And thats a gasser. These idi's redline at like 3k so it doesnt really matter. just feel her out.
