If you did not know. The 7.3 IDIT internals are different from the 7.3 IDI. The block is thicker. The pistons are stronger with larger wrist pins and the rods are stouter on the IDIT. The rings on the IDIT are Full Keystone #1 and #2 vs rectangular #1 and taper faced #2 on the IDI The injectors are different. The oil cooler is bigger. The oil pump is bigger

I've torn down probably 30 of these some of what you say is right. Block is nearly identical with a couple minor differences , pistons were aluminum just like the na ones and were not ceramic coated, the rods were forged just the same as na but yes they did have larger wrist pins, the injectors were supposed to be improved but outta the performance companies I've spoke with hypermax and r+d the difference is negligible. The oil pump was the same but yes the oil cooler had additional cooling fins on the idit. The injection pump was rated at a higher cc thou

I made a small mistake in the video. The fsctory turbo adapter for the turbo feed is actually tapped for 1/8 npt but if that adapter is unbolted there's a 1/4 npt hole underneath it you can also use

Thanks for the video Mike I had to remove my turbo and put holes in the valley pan. I wouldn't have known that without your video. My question is about oil restriction in the turbo feed line. My truck never had low pressure before installing the kit on my idi. I need to use a mechanical guage to check pressure or block turbo oil feed line to see if my sending unit is bad or what's going on.

service intervals for these is technically around 200k so you could but your gambling on 20-30yr old gaskets unless prior work has been done. Lots of people have turboed past that point without issue but others have very quickly popped a headgasket after. Of course that could also be due to the driver lol. I think hypermax recommended at minimum a retorque check of the head bolts upon a fresh installation on an older engine.

if I'm not mistaken the turbo motors have lower compression cylinders then the none turbo, so if you put a turbo on a none turbo engine you need to adjust your turbo waste valve or pay the price of blown head gaskets or cracked heads just FYI i learn the hard way
@groundtogreen1140
@groundtogreen1140 7 жыл бұрын
if there was a difference in compression it's very minimal. Many people have safely turboed naturally aspirated Motors without any issues of cracking heads or head gasket failure especially running off a stock naturally aspirated injection pump. my current motor has a non wastegated hypermax kit stock fuel settings I've ran her hours and hours of driving never had an issue. another guy I know is running a 6.9 with the factory turbo kit with no issues in over a year and the 6.9 has smaller head bolts so it's actually more prone to blow a head gasket than the 7.3

you put turbo on a good good ole 7.3 N/A idi and didnt bother with even a 5 min google check? i can tell you off hand the idi 7.3 N/A has about 21 to 1 and the turbo version has 17 to 1... its quite a bit more than "minimal"...also engine parts differ between the two..

The powerstroke has a lower compression ratio, people confuse the powerstroke with a 7.3 idit, they are totally different. The only thing they share is displacement. The powerstroke is a direct injection engine, the idit is still indirect injection and needs the high compression ratio in order to start easily

I’m doin a left hand turbo mount on my 6.9 idi. As the turbo won’t fit in the valley with the vehicle I have it in. Where can I run my oil drain pipe to? Or can I still run into the old CDR hole like turbo idi’s, or will this create to much pressure on the return side?
@groundtogreen1140

You can use the hole where the cdr was but you'll want a cc vent somewhere to avoid building pressures. Most choose the inspection cover hole in front of the pump timing cover

hi Mike, thanks for the video.. I just bought an 1988 f250 7.3l diesel .. my only question after watching this video is.. is it worth it.. I mean, by factory specs there was only 5 hp gain between the non turbo and the 7.3 turbo model. it shows that it literally went from 180 to 185 by adding the turbo..ok maybe a modern turbo may have better results but like I asked. do you feel it's worth all the work/money? thanks again for the video and your time.

@@jellyfrosh9102 most people don't do the studs, and end up joining the IDI yard ornament army. I was told by IDI Performance that none of the common turbos put out enough pressure to need bigger cc on pump, too.. The hotside kit from IDI performance and a ebay turbo is easier than finding one in a scrap yard, and is only like 48% more the cost. If you're non conformist you can also cam and pump tune instead of turbo

typically you would want to turn it up depending on the pump your running and the boost numbers you want. Every kit performs differently and some are not as efficient as others. For ex I maxed out my ip for the hypermax kit and couldn't get much above 10lbs yet with my factory kit I haven't touched my fuel and I can hit 7 at stock calibration. You definitely will want to retime it as well so have it run as efficient as possible.

Honestly I just can't justify putting the money into putting a turbo kit on an idi, unless you can snag one off another idi. Otherwise you're just better off spending the money on buying an OBS Powerstroke. Engine mounts and transmission bolt pattern are the exact same, so it's literally a drop in swap and you get WAY more out of it.

not really once you factor in all the wiring and modules. and if left stock it's not much of a power difference vs an idit. Most of us who upgrade these know it won't be the biggest baddest truck on yhe block but it doesn't have to be either

I'm new to diesels and of course I have an issue. I have an 86 f250 6.9 with banks turbo. there is an oil leak under the turbo some where. I lost about 2 quarts of oil in 2 weeks. the oil is leaking down the back of the engine and on to the bell housing on the driver's side. before I start taking stuff apart is there any issues with taking the turbo off to see where the issues is then putting it back on? would you have any idea what is leaking?
@groundtogreen1140
@groundtogreen1140 7 жыл бұрын
there's a feed line and drain line for the turbo charger. I'm not as familiar with banks but on most they have a square cut o ring in the feed line that likes to leak over time. I'd start there and also verify your back valley isn't full of oil . If it is you might have to punch the valley pan. I had to do so on my hypermax turboed na motor

Mike Grn ok so just curious.. why would you have to put a turbo flywheel on a non turbo engine when putting a factory turbo on? Wouldn’t it be the same difference as putting an after market non factory turbo on? I can make a video of my situation if it would help.. I bought a NA 7.3, the flywheel looks different from the turbo 7.3 that I have.. (trying to convert the NA 7.3 to turbo because the turbo engine is completely gone.. btw let me know if you need any parts lol. Thanks for the response! It’s much appreciated!
@groundtogreen1140
@groundtogreen1140 5 жыл бұрын
@@goodolboys713 you don't. On a factory turbo engine entire rotating assembly is balnced different from harmonic.balancer to flexplate/flywheel. So going from na to turbo you just have to bolt on turbo no need to switch any of the rotating assembly parts.
@goodolboys713
@goodolboys713 5 жыл бұрын
Mike Grn ok awesome.. so basically I just need to stick with the same flywheel that came off my NA and just bolt the turbo to it. Thanks! I was about to bolt the turbo flywheel to my NA motor.. probabaly saved the engine lol thanks again!
