If you're not familiar with changing plugs on the 4.6, I recommend going down to the local wrecking yard and practice on an old police car or taxi cab they got sitting around there. Also, be very careful when removing the coil from cylinder number eight (last one on driver's side) because it is very easy to strip the head of the bolt holding the coil down, and it is also a little bit tricky getting the coil in and out of that location. Also, if you're new to this, I would recommend doing one spark plug at a time. Also, when putting the new spark plugs in, I recommend using a length of 3/8 fuel line instead of socket and an extension. The 3/8 fuel line will grip the ceramic insulator tight enough that you can screw it in, but it will slip if you start to make a cross threading mistake.
@Chaos_2 жыл бұрын
Good advice!

The fuel line trick goes way back. You can't cross thread using hand power. You can feel the thread catch.

There are many you tube videos showing how to deal with broken plugs on these Ford v8's but they usually refer to the three valve engines not the 2 valve engines. The 2 valve engines seem to have a problem with blowing spark plugs out of the head.
@charleswilson45986 жыл бұрын
You might have been lucky. A lot of these engines are reported to have problems with spark plugs blowing out. That wasn't a problem with the old 352 or 390 but this is a different year, different engines. Even experienced Ford techs say it is a good idea to over torque these spark plugs. Maybe by doing it your way it is normal for you to over torque your spark plugs which might work ok on these engines. Not to mention the great idea Ford had to use plastic intake manifolds which have an unacceptable failure rate.

Thanks for this video - I just did this job on a 2005 CVPI. The tip about the air gun to blow out dirt and debris is spot on. Changing the plugs made a noticeable difference in how the engine was running. Prior to the plug change it was throwing a P0307 code so #7 may not have been firing or only sporadically. Definitely recommend using a 1/4 ratchet to remove the 7mm bolts from the coils - I didn't have a 1/4 joint so I had to use my 3/8" ratchet and it was a PITA for #7 cylinder.

15 newton meters or 11lbs of torque is to low these 4.6 engines, a spec that has been updated to 20-25 ft lbs of torque. Otherwise you risk the plugs popping out, literally, it has happen and it’s a known problem with all 4.6l motors.
@mediaguy40374 жыл бұрын
Everybody usually does 15.
@SlikLizrd4 жыл бұрын
Man, you're tempting fate with 20-25 ft./lbs of torque on an aluminum cylinder head. Over 250,000 miles on our 4.6 Romeos at 15-18 ftt/lbs (Using Craftsman "Clicker" Torque Wrench) with never a stripped thread OR a loosened plug. HOWEVER, I NEVER use anti -siezeon my spark plugs, for just one very simple reason: It's too easy to accidently let just a bit of Anti-Sieze get on the gap, which shorts out the plug on start-up. Consideirng the difficulty of accessing the plugs on today's engines makes it too risky, especially on transverse V-6s. TO avoid the dreaded Anti-Sieze, I use Bosch Double-Iridiums, which are plated. Denso also makes fine spark plugs, and they are plated, as well. 20-25 ft/lbs is on the shaky side, in my view, and I'm picky, picky, picky. ;>)

There is no "debate" !! DO NOT USE anti-seize compond of any kind, the reason being that all anti-seize compounds conduct electricity, and a stray bit of anti-seize on the plug gap will short the plug. I recommend Full Synthetic Engine Oil as a plug thread lubricant -- does the job with no chance of shorting out the spark. Bosch Iridium and Denso Platinum plugs are plated, and there is no need for anti-seize with those brands. The Motorcraft plugs are servicable, but the Bosch Double Iridiums are a better design, and offer better performance. Yes, they cost more, but are WELL worth the money !

Plug threads release best when the engine is SLIGHTLY warm. Use the proper size plug wrench -- and remember -- "Lefty-loosey; righty-tighty!" When installing new plugs, use a good-quality torque wrench to be SURE that all plugs are seated properly to maintain maximum compression in each cylinder. On the 4.6 Liter's aluminum heads, I recommend a 150 inch-pound setting on the torque wrench.

Absolutely, you'll have much less chance of pulling the threads out with the plug. The change in the torque setting is nominal and not enough to worry about. I've been doing it for 45 years without a problem, ever. No torque wrench, somewhere between snug and good and tight. This younger generation is paranoid. I've seen them use a torque wrench on drain plugs!
