They were quite commonplace going back a decade or so. Mainly as there wasn't the sprinter conversion as seen now.

@@christopherberry8984 The F-350 Ambulance uses a 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel engine which is one of the most reliable in the world. It isn't as efficient as the Sprinters diesel but it is much more powerful.

Excellent catch! In the RAF I was lucky enough to get behind the wheel of USAF F-450 ambos several times. I never made it onto public roads with one, but it's probably for the best, as US coach building is designed for long, straight, flat North American roads, and historically this type of rig has always struggled with the twisting, turning, and somewhat potholed British roads. Nevertheless it is still a great site to see one on blues and twos in the UK 👍

What is the point in these things? Surely the cost of importing and converting an American ambulance to UK standards, (while keeping it left hand drive) far outweighs the cost of an off the shelf UK vehicle..

Being an American Ambulance in England that is great seen the driver on the left side of the ambulance driving the American vehicle in England that is great the American Ambulance is better than European ambulances as an American I feel more comfortable knowing that there's an American Ambulance in England

Wow, that's a rarity. I do wonder why did decide to go with an American style ambulance? As an American obviously I love it, but our vehicles here are known to be big and boxy. Not exactly able to fit most small, narrow roads.

It's a private ambulance company called Heathrow Air Ambulance and they only usually operate in London where roads are big and very very rare to see

As a driver I am less patient with private ambulances like this. They are a commercial operator with wholly private clients. I will allow them to pass but I resent it.

I have to say I partially agree... however, some people in these can be very seriously ill. Some are people flying back home to be treated, others are critically ill coming to the UK's specialist hospitals.

Private services support the NHS and undertake work the NHS doesn't do like repatriations from other countries, event work, Inter-hospital transfers etc. Private providers mostly have the same quality and principles than NHS Trusts but granted there are some out there that shouldn't be operating at all due to quality of care etc.

But that's not without saying, just because it's a privately owned company or charity doesn't mean you get any less care, compassion and service than the NHS, sometimes more so. Most patients private providers transport and/or treat are NHS patients.

As someone who works as an EMT in private EMS, in the United States, I don’t really understand your comment. My company is contracted as the primary ambulance 911 response for the city were based out of. On top of that we do paramedic intercepts to BLS ambulances, and we’re contracted with 3 other satellite locations in other towns as the primary ambulance. Not to mention the mutual aid we provide to other towns, and inter facility transports. Sometimes inter facility transports can turn into an emergency or require emergent transfer to a higher level care facility.
