Great instructional video. I have a 2019 Ford edge; the engine looks a little different than the one in this video. I have had to fill the coolant reservoir twice in the last couple of months with no apparent leaks anywhere I'm guessing it might be the head gasket. Any advice? Thank you.

Im praying its not leaking into the cylinder and its somewhere else and the misfire is a bad coil or something simple because there's no way in hell i could do this without screwing something up. Very good . Easy to follow. I got a question if after building back together I noticed I got a bit of oil in piston what does that mean. Bad rigs?
@NiXFiX
@NiXFiX 3 ай бұрын
Could be turbo blow by. Could be valve seals. Could be rings (but less likely in my opinion). So I assume you used a borescope and saw the oil? If you did, run the engine to operating temp. Then pull a plug and look in. If dry, wait 12 hours, then look again. If oil, likely valve seals.

Thanks for the great video, just the right amount of info for me (not too much, not too little!). Did you use an OEM head gasket or aftermarket? Any issues since the replacement? I heard a lot of times the head is warped or the block is cracked so the new gasket doesn't always fix the issue? I'm thinking the same as you, I don't mind spending a weekend replacing the head gasket if it gets me another 50,000+ miles before it goes again. The current one lasted 120,000 miles.
@NiXFiX
@NiXFiX 8 ай бұрын
Thank you for the kind words. Yes I used an OEM head gasket. Heads don't typically warp unless you over heat an engine. The reason these head gaskets fail is because of the block design. I sold this vehicle awhile ago, so I can't give you any further data.

I'd be worried about imperfecting what little sealing surface is there. Also, in that environment, whatever you put would eventually wear away. I could maybe see welding it and then machining flat, but that is a lot work when you can just do the gasket and get 5 years or 50,000 miles out of it.

What a great video. I enjoyed building the engines I’ve built over the years and had great service from them afterwards but these Ecoboost engines are a whole new breed unto themselves. When mine goes and it surely will, I have no desire to do what you did in these videos. I have no understanding why engineers would design an engine with sprockets to be installed on any kind of smooth shaft without a jetway and key. Ha. Where are you located? Do you do this for pay? Did you have to plane the head??
@NiXFiX
@NiXFiX Жыл бұрын
No. I typically don't resurface heads unless I am also resurfacing the block (especially if it was an overheat condition and the head warped but is still within spec. This is because the block probably warped a little as well and having a slightly warped block and perfect head would be bad. If it overheated and they're still in spec, they'll match better going right back together). Just hand clean the surfaces with a blade and some solvent/brake cleaner.

Are cylinder head bolts a one time use only? I noticed you linked them in the description, why can’t we reuse the old ones?
@NiXFiX

Any torque to yield bolt is one time use. If you reuse it (them) and follow the torque specs, you run the risk of snapping a bolt. Also, its clamping stretch is gone.

Hi NiX FiX I have a 2018 escape 1.5L, 91638 km and I'm afraid about this problem (coolant intrusion) do you know if is for sure that this problem is going to happen some day? I asked a mechanic about this problem, and he said that the only thing possible is just replace the short block and I said, what about just replacing the head gasket? and he said that could be an option but it will not fix the problem. Now I'm asking you, is your problem fixed? I'm afraid because I do not have the budget for this kind of repair and looks like replace just the head gasket will be cheaper than replace the short block. (sorry for my english)
@NiXFiX
@NiXFiX 5 ай бұрын
A (redesigned) short block replacement is the best solution to eliminate the problem. But, a $40 head gasket (if you can do it yourself like I did in 15 hours) wins every time. The original head gasket lasted just over 60,000 miles on this escape. 15 hours of labor every 60,000 miles isn't bad.
