The 2.7l is actually a very heavily built motor. Four bolt mains, compacted graphite iron block (the only production gasoline engine to use it), an aluminum ladder frame block skirt , that basically makes it a deep skirt block (and directly supports the main bearing caps), forged everything (pistons, con rods, crank, and cams) semi-open engine deck ( I call it semi-closed deck because there are 6 support points instead of the conventional 3 with semi-open) as opposed to the open deck 5.0 and 3.5 ecoboost, monolithic head and exhaust manifold (which means the exhaust manifold and turbos have coolant journals, which both speeds up engine warm up and reduces turbo and combustion chamber operating temperatures) and is just physically more compact (which inherently adds strength) with a very high lubricant capacity per displacement (2.22 qts per liter of displacement in a shorter block design vs 1.6 qts per liter in the 5.0l, and 1.7 qts per liter in the 3.5 [2.24 qts per liter in the 6.7 powerstroke] ) and overall, much fewer moving parts than the 5.0l v8. In 2018 and up, the engine has port injection to reduce intake valve, spark plug and injector fouling, electronic wastegates as opposed to mechanical, hollow cam shafts which reduce rotating mass, improve throttle response, efficiency, and theoretically put less strain on the timing chain, increasing service life. They are also stupidly easy to maintain, adopting the euro style top cartridge filter, a toolless oil pan plug, easy access valve covers, and just being very compact in the engine compartment. It's my opinion it should be the base engine in the F-250, as it's towing fuel economy is roughly equal, or sometimes better than the 5.0l for the same load, and it just utterly destroys the 5.0l in a truck application with that broad torque curve (the 5.0, especially the gen2 coyote, is quite peaky) As all direct injection engines go, and even moreso as it's forced induction with forged pistons (higher expansion rates forged vs cast) they do experience a fair amount of crank case intrusion from blow by, increasing fuel dilution of the engine oil. Max oil change interval I would suggest is 6500 miles, and less if you primarily drive short trips or tow often. Short trips don't allow proper warm up of the pistons, so seals will not get an opportunity to optimize. This situation is true for the 5.0l and 3.5 eco as well. Slightly less of a consideration on the N/A 5.0l simply because of it's lower cylinder pressures. Just treat it like a diesel, a diesel you can actually rev out and doesn't have 75 tons of emissions (reliability robbing) equipment bolted to it. Physically, it is the heaviest built engine available for the F-150, betraying the populous opinion of smaller displacement = weaker. The only TSBs that crop up with the 2.7 are limited lot supply and manufacturing defects, and not design issues. I might, daresay, that this is the best engine Ford has created in over 40 years. Maybe that's why it's the basis for most of their new product lineup. It's like the 289, they put it in everything.

Thank you, sir, for an outstanding explanation of how awesome the 2.7L is! I agree with everything you said. It reminds me of a diesel engine and obviously it is built like one. Thank you for your feedback and for watching. You sound like you were or are currently a military mechanic for one of the greatest militaries in the world. If that is or was the case your service is greatly appreciated! Good day!

Very accurate explanation and I agree, even though the 2.7 has been out for only 5 years or so its seems to be a very capable and reliable engine minus the plastic oil pan issue and as far as DI, get it on the highway once in a while for a good long drive the best time is right before you change your oil it cleans all the gum and sludge out especially as engines age and that applies to all engines really and change your oil every 8000km

As an owner of a 2021 F-150 STX 2.7, I approve this message. The 10 gears, the limit shifting ability, sport mode and twin turbos it's always a blast to drive. The torque this lil motor makes is very impressive. If you have 1 and haven't tried sport mode I recommend you try it, you'll never drive in normal mode again.

i have owned both... within the past 4 years and towed with both. 24ft snowmobile trailer, both trucks had 3.55 gears too btw. and gas mileage was 10.2ish with both engines towing. Some trips better some trips worse but when pulling they were equal, but would probably give the edge to the 2.7 since it would typically hold a higher gear better since the torque would come in lower, where the 5.0 would need to wind out to a higher RPM. The V8 was effected slightly more by head winds and hills. The V8 does sound great especially if you put a CAI on it... but the 2.7 feels snappier and is faster. I just ordered a new 22 F150 Lariat and got it with the 2.7

Thank you! In the past, every F-150 I’ve ever had always had either a 4.6L or a 5.0L and I thought I’d never stray from that. Then, this last November, I test drove what’s now my current truck and was floored when the salesman told me it was a 2.7L. After getting it till lately I wondered if I made the right decision getting it. But considering gas prices these days plus this video and others like it, I feel vindicated. For anyone reading this, he’s absolutely right about the stats and how these engines feel and drive. Try the 2.7 out. It’ll be a total mind blower!

I had the 5.0 & now I have the 3.5. Both have ran well for me, and in both engines I religiously maintained with oil changes with a good full synthetic oil. 5.0 had 250k before we parted ways, and my 2018 3.5 has over 85k with no issues. Another way that you can look at it is for example I drive my 3.5 similar to how I drove my 5.0, and something that is very apparent is that I am averaging close to 5 mile per gallon more on my 3.5 motor. If I hit 100k miles and still have zero issues, then I saved $5000.00 in fuel cost between the two based on $3 a gallon gas.

I just bought a 2020 2.7 EB. Only time will tell, but I feel pretty confident that the 2.7 will serve me well. While there's no denying the 5.0 sounds way better, I think the EB, especially the 2.7, has a lot going for it. I've the seen the argument that the 5.0 is more simple, but it's not really. I've had a 2011 3.5 Eco and currently have a 2015 5.0. My experience with the 3.5 was it was much faster off the line than the 5.0 and the transmission shifted a lot less. Fuel economy was so -so - I got 16 from new but found it ran best on 89 octane. mileage went down with 87. The best I ever did with it was 18 mpg and mileage seemed to move around a lot with the seasons going down in the Winter. In comparison my 5.0 gets 19 mpg consistently since new on 87 octane no matter what the season is. The 3.5 also went through a set of tires in 22,000 miles where-as I'm averaging at least 40,000 with the 5.0. It could just be the tires (both had Goodyear Wranglers) but it also might be the torque coming on much lower for the 3.5 Eco. The 3.5 was trouble free up to about 50,000 miles when I had the plugs start shorting out from carbon tracking - a common problem. When I traded it at 60,000 miles it was making a noise that I think was the vacuum pump - also a known problem. The one thing that bothered me is that when I pulled the dipstick out on the 3.5 near when I traded it - it had a brown varnish like coating to it and you could also see that buildup when looking through the oil fill hole on the cams. I faithfully changed my oil at about 4,000 miles and used Ford's synthetic blend. The 5.0 has been reliable up till 60,000 miles other than brakes (all 4 rotors replaced along with a rear hub). At 60,000 miles it took a water pump and at 62,000 it's making a noise that sounds like gears grinding that lasts a second or two and i'm pretty sure that is the vacuum operated front hub actuators and is a known problem. The dipstick on the 5.0 looks as clean as the day i brought it home. I'm in the market for a new F150 (the chip shortage has delayed my plans probably a year) and was going to go with another 5.0 until I found out Ford is using cylinder deactivation and a belt driven oil pump on the new ones. I know GM has had a lot of trouble with cylinder deactivation and I'm not thrilled with a rubber belt sitting in hot oil lasting the life of the truck. The 5.0 definately sounds better (I also have a Mustang Gt) and I probably know how to drive a V-8 better for fuel economy but I'm strongly leaning toward the 3.5 Eco from a drivability standpoint. You just don't have to lay on the gas to get the power out of the turbo like you do with the V-8. After reading this it might at least be worth a test drive of a 2.7 - my speed racer days are pretty much behind me at this point. Thanks

It got 26.5MPG coming home from Death Valley today. I average 24 city and highway. The twin turbos can get you from 65 to 95 in seconds. I plan on keeping this vehicle for well over 300K.

That's one of the arguments experts make. Ecoboost gets the turbo spooling and then hits you with a wave of torque, with the 5.0 you have to rev it to get anything out of it, especially under heavy load.

The only comparison I can make is with with my old 5.4, since I've never owned a coyote powered truck. Compared to my new 2.7L its not in the same league. If you own a 2.7 or 3.5 ecoboost I highly recommend you install a catch can right away and clean it out every 3 to 5 thousand miles. I also recommend using BG MOA oil additive after each oil change and then BG 44k to the gas for cleaning the injectors every 5k miles. These simple and easy maintenance tasks should significantly help with the longevity of your ecoboost engines.

I also recommend a catch can for the 5.0s as well. The 5.0s are notorious for blow by. My 5.0 caught 2-3 times more oil than my 3.5 did. I’d also like to add to your advice. My brother's new 2021 5.0 F150 4wd made 24 mpg on its first fill up, likely due to cylinder deactivation introduced on the 5.0. This past weekend, it averaged 15.5 mpg towing at 70 mph a 5500 lb trailer and some cargo in the bed. So, don't think it's time to write off the capabilities of a modern, very efficient V8. I wish your channel the best of luck. I’m a new owner of a 2.7. I’ve had some non mechanical issues(camera and dash warp). The oil change argument is a bit dubious as I would be inclined to change my turbos oil at no more than 7500 versus not really minding getting to 10k on a naturally aspirated V8. The eco has averaged 21 for me as of now. I’ve never dropped below 18...which was my best ever in my Tundra. The 2.7 likes 91 in the summer though. Heat kills the mpgs in the turbo. I believe the 26 mpg on the sticker will be changed to 24 the next time the EPA does the math... The 2.7 is stupid fast. There is lag in turbos... .5 seconds worth so while he was getting 5.3 liters to hammer down I was in 4th gear heading to 8th in a matter of seconds. The 10 speed is just stupid fast. It was not on purpose though. He did try again with the same result though... I got to the speed limit within 4 seconds and its not worth an accident or ticket to continue. ‘17 or older, get a 5.0, ‘18 or newer get an EcoBoost. 2018 was the year they ironed out a lot of the problems the first 2.7’s had, and was also the year the 5.0 picked up some problems such as the excessive oil consumption and the deceleration rattle. I’ve also heard from a few 18+ 5.0 owners that they knock pretty bad if you don’t run 93 in them, so the lower mpg coupled with more expensive gas would add up pretty quick.

You have it backwards. 18-20 5L trucks will stomp 7 shades of chit out of 11-17 5L trucks. Start modding and it gets even worse for the older trucks. You can point to issues with all these engines. Ford tech was telling me that they never see oil leaks with the Coyotes, but the Ecoboost's (and particularly the 2.7L's) are always coming in for oil leak repairs, and especially since Ford converted over to composite oil pans. Something about boost creating extra pressure in your crank case. Odd how my 03 Lightning or 03 Cobra have never had an issue leaking oil with all the miles, age, and boost I've pushed thru them. Quiet is kept that the Coyote has become the best V8 in its class, and the best performance engine available in a truck without having to tear into the engine. Torque is irrelevant with a 10R80. Let me rephrase. A Coyote isn't trying to play below 4K RPM, and with the 10R80's willingness to shift even with 1/8th throttle there's always a gear. When strictly talking performance a 10R80 is way better than a 6R80. Egoboost is nice for throwing a few boltons, a little ethanol, and a tune at to get you mids to maybe low 12's, but if you really want to take your comfortable/refined truck to the track and play with Z06's and GTR's the Coyote with a blower is where it's at. Plus Coyote is fully forged, where Egoboost isn't. (Not sure about 2.7L) Seriously what's an Egoboost piston good for before being considered on borrowed time? Maybe 500-550 WHP or so? Also Coyote F150's are flex fuel vehicles. Egoboost isn't flex fuel from the factory and neither is 5L Mudstains. The SD setup in the 18+ Coyote trucks is the bomb unless you intend to cam the engine. Anyone you says E85 isn't worth it in a N/A engine has 0 experience with a GEN3 Coyote or a GEN5 SBC. How do you make an engine with a 12:1 CR that's rated for use with 87 octane survive? You retard the hell out of its timing. A custom flex fuel tune lets you run whatever octane you want and adjusts for it. E85 is pretty much race gas you buy at the pump, and running it throws a ton of timing back at the engine, and big performance gains are realized. Of course an 18 Coyote wants good octane with a 12:1 CR. (GEN2 Coyote had an 11:1 CR and the GEN1 truck Coyotes had less than that) You think Egoboost doesn't want higher octane. The 3.5L even gives you a factory HP increase when running premium. I think 25 HP extra? My 18 XLT 302A, FX4, crewcab, 5L, 3.73 rear gear truck, with just a drop in K&N, and an AMRL tune running straight E85 ( which I daily on) will straight up walk away from my bolton 03 Lightning. RCSB Rams running 5.7L/8 speed setups get spanked. The trucks redline is some BS. My tuned truck spins about 7,200 RPM's and does so happy even with the truck manifold. A ported Boss 302, 18+ Mustang GT, GT350/Bullitt/Mach1 or Cobra Jet manifold adds a bunch of performance to these trucks even with their lowend torque lose. Here's an example of a 2020 STX crew with a 5L running a ported Boss 302 manifold, stock TB, I believe LT's and some deleted cats with the small diameter pipe in front of the factory muffler replaces with a 3" pipe, and a AMRL tune running E85. This is what the 18-20 trucks with minimum mods do. Unfortunately the 21+ trucks are locked up and can't be tuned on at this time. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKfCgHp3bNR-fJo

Im happy so many of the commenters like the 2.7, since you help to keep ford in business. Your arguement about cheaper oil changes and better fuel mpgs will be over when you have to replace the turbos in it though. The 5..0l with 3.73 rear axle ratio will smoke any 2.7l configs. The 5.0l can tow 4k more pounds, and is better for heavy payloads. The 5.0l is more refined, and a better option for upgrades. The 5.0l doesn't work as hard for everyday tasks because larger displacement engines can handle general use with ease. I'm not knocking the 2.7 or 3.5; it comes down to choice. My money is going on a 5.0l engine! Whatever choice you do make, use full synthetic oil, and change is ever 7500 miles..........don't stretch it out if you want the engine to last. "Oil is cheap, engines are not." -Scotty Kilmer. Don't want to take my word for it, look up any of Scottys videos on ecoboost engines. Still not good enough, T and C and 1 other youtube ford dealer interviewed all of their mechanics in 2017, and 2019. The majority recommend the 5.0 over any of the ecoboosts.

I've owned 4 Fords since 2005 (2 V6 , 2 V8 ,) Both V6's Had some issues ( the 98 transmission needed a rebuild at 120k but then went to 275k before needing a engine rebulid) my 2nd V6 (2014) went to 89k and i could tell the tranny was starting to have issues (also needed a catalytic converter at 60k) but traded it for the Platinum i have now. My 2011 V8 was a Great Truck. Not one issue drove it to California and back (Florida) 3 times up to Penn State, NY, State several Times. Its was just a strong dependable truck that i never worried about breaking down. I religiously maintain my vehicles with Oil changes and any other requirements, and always had them done at the Ford dealership. I will stick with my 5.0 I do appreciate your view and channel ..

To each their own of course, but I love my ‘17 XLT Fx4 5.0 coyote! The coyote is actually an engineering marvel and underrated IMO. 1. I’m more old school so of course “there’s no replacement for displacement” 2. Naturally aspirated power baby! 3. No worries with replacing the turbo which ain’t cheap and less stuff that could break 3. 11K lbs max towing capacity 4. Love the purr of a V8 (although still running stock exhaust 🤨) 5. Gets decent mpgs for what it is: 17-18 mixed and over 22 pure highway 🛣 (when I keep my foot off of it) Roll with whatca like though. Pros/cons to every motor. It is certainly impressive what they can get out of those motors with a turbo. Even the turbo’d 4 banger (2.3L?) Mustang my BIL has can put you back in your seat believe it or not! I had 2020 F150 5.0 and recently traded it in for a 2021 2.7. Basically just swapped it out due to the chip shortage. I loved the sound of the 5.0. And that's probably the only thing I miss about it. The 5.0 felt sluggish for some reason. Really no low end torque. I would have to stomp on it to get it to respond. I'm sure there are those who like this so they can here that 5.0 but I like the low end torque better on the 2.7. It's very responsive and basically just glides on the road with very little effort. Was worried I was going to have oil consumption issues with the Coyote so this was one of the other reasons I traded it in. Only thing I don't like about the 2.7 is that it's too quiet and an after market exhaust makes it sound stupid lol. But I'm loving the 2.7 so far.

I think there's plenty of evidence the 2.7 will last well past 100k miles. It probably depends on how you're using it and maintaining it. If you're towing a heavy trailer everyday, it's probably not the best fit. Towing every now and then, the family boat or camper, it's probably just fine. I don't trust the 10k mile suggested oil change interval though. I'm going with every 5k miles. I was somewhat reluctant to make that eco bost techno-leap also. My last truck was 96 F150 with 300 inline six and was absolutely bullet proof. I bought it used (new to me) in 98 and drove it 21+ years.

@@theoverdriveconsumerchanne4424 I ws on a trip to NY to go to my sons wedding and took a trip to Maine, or at least I thought I was, blew the engine in Utica NY. Ford wanted to rebuild it using the same block. It took two months to get it fixed and when I flew up there from Kansas to pick it up and drove to my son’s house to spend the night, the car wouldn’t start the next day. I took it to the Geneva Ford dealer and they found that the Utica dealer didn’t put the fuel injector in right and there was a huge gas leak. I decided at that point to buy another truck from them but I bought the 5.0 with the 10 speed. If they had sold Toyota I would have bought one. I hear the 10 speed is having problems and there is a class action against Ford/GM for that. So far both the 5.0 and the 10 speed are holding up. This will be my last Ford I can guarantee that. I don’t tow anything over 3000# and I baby the engine and we drive 90% highway miles since we live in the country. Ford only reimbursed me $900 of the $1800 I spent renting cars, hotels, air travel back and forth, etc. for my troubles. Good video. For me, I chose the 5.0 for my 2020. That is after actually renting both eco-boosts and the 5.0 for a week at a time. Its a big decision to make, so thats what I always do when I buy a new vehicle. I absolutely did not like the 3.5eco. It was loud, had lots of ticking and quite frankly, it seemed under powered. The 2.7eco I liked. It is much quieter than the 3.5. It was very nice thruout the power curve had lots of low end get up, but seemed to trip over itself at highway speeds. It is the great choice I feel if you live in a congested city and still want a pickup. The 5.0 was actually the quietest of all 3. I did notice that the 10r80 made more noises with this 5.0. Weird, but it did. Yes. You are absolutely correct that you will see the low end power difference. I noticed it immediately. The 5.0 was extremely spirited on the highway, but not so much if you want to jump out quickly into traffic. So, the only reason why I went with the 5.0 is because I modify all my vehicles. The 5.0 is a blank canvas making 395hp at the crank. It is now 847hp to the wheels. That is a HUGE difference. I have yet to see any ecoboost street driven that matches it. Maybe they are out there, but in Central Florida, I can't find one and f150's here are as common as a minivan at a soccer field.

The 2.7 and 3.5 are great engines but, they need turbos to make the power. That's more issues and more things to fail. The ecoboost engines are built very well because they have to be. They are making insane power out of a small displacement, so naturally everything is being pushed close to the limits. Its kind of like running a mile around a track. You can jog it at a leisurely pace, or you can flat out sprint. Either way accomplishes the same goal, but one requires much more energy / abuse than the other.
