Your video on this is the best I've come across, specifically for the Ford Flex (and I've viewed nearly all of them for the Ford vehicles w/this Duratex engine and internal water pump). Your verbal "play-by-play" is perfect, covering every detail. Same goes for all your video footage. You put the time in to understand what the camera is showing to us, the viewers (many others don't bother). Excellent work. I am NOT planning to do this job myself, but I'm bookmarking your video as a detailed reference of all that's involved and all the components that come out once you pull the timing cover away. I have a 2016 Ford Flex AWD (not Eco Boost) with 119,000 miles. I was planning to preemptively have the water pump, all timing chains, all guides, all solenoids/tensioners replaced at 120,000 miles. But two months ago I started hearing a faint/brief rapid "ticking" on startup. Thought it was likely an early indicator of stretch in the chain(s). My mechanic agreed. And so I bit the bullet and had them do this job a month ago. Was not cheap ($3900) but the local mechanic is good and only 2 miles from me! The original water pump looked spotless and was working fine, with zero evidence this past year of any leaks (I monitor daily the coolant reservoir level and check for any evidence on the garage floor). Thank you for posting this. You deserve kudos from everyone.

Nice video. Just did this on a 2017 explorer non eco boost however this looks very similar. I did notice you missed putting RTV on the upper "V" portion of the timing cover😱. Hope you didnt have to redo the job from it leaking there as that is never a fun thing especially on a job this big. Great job otherwise. Cheers from Brandon Mississippi!

We had to have that done on our 2013 flex, fortunately we were still under warranty or else we would have a huge bill, I kept thinking why these Geniuses at ford designed an engine with the water pump inside the engine behind the timing chain 🥴 and since that job we've developed an oil leak that I havent tracked down yet, It's the wifes car and I keep forgetting about it until I see the oil spots on the driveway😅 Anyway nice job bro appreciate you sharing it with us.

Clearance is the reason. The same engine in the F-150 uses an external pump because there is room for it. This is the same for all FWD cars made by Ford that use the 3.5 NA and EB. At least the engine doesn't need to be removed like in the Fusion.

I have a few questions, dealer did my 2019 Lincoln MKT 3.5l under warranty. Dealer stated the water pump was leaking. I'm a retired Master Tech. Never done one of them. When I received it back, I looked around the motor. First thing I noticed the oil was not changed and the dust was not disturb. My question is can this repair be done without a oil change and removing all the parts?

According to my service information the water pump is internal and access to it is similar to this Flex. The intake manifold, valve covers and front timing cover need to be removed.

You can do it without replacing the oil. But you would have to mask everything below the water pump off to keep the coolant from going in to the oil pan when you remove the water pump. Bearing HATE coolant. I require my customers to allow for an oil and filter change. If they refuse, they can take it somewhere else. It’s my name on the job. I don’t take any chances.

Getting a 2011 EB soon. Ford pulls up two different water pumps for my VIN - One w a single sprocket and one with dual sprocket. I'd have thought with the VIN it would tell you exactly what you have but apparently not - any idea?

Thanks! The pump was from the dealer. All other gaskets were from the local parts store. In this rare instance Fel-Pro Fell short. I would recommend Mahle if available 👍

What rtv did you use? Ford says to use their ta-357 but obviously its xrazy expensive in comparison, im torn between using permatex ultra grey or ultra black

Question, the permatex black rtv says to wait 24 hours before adding fluid/return to service, is that actually necessary or is a few hours okay? I'm in the middle of this job, tomorrow makes day 3 so I'm pretty anxious lol

Not so much on the 3.5 Ecoboost. If this was a 5.4 like in the earlier F-150 then absolutely the phasers would be changed.

I was thoroughly impressed with the video until you skipped the harmonic install.. and the motor mount for torque specs and such. I’m having to google to finish up now 😢
