In this video I go over the steps and procedures necessary to replace the water pump and thermostat assembly on a Ford F1 50 with a 3.5 L eco-boost engine. I also go over the necessary O-rings and seals necessary to replace and gain access to the water pump and thermostat. While it is not mandatory to replace the thermostat when servicing the water pump on these motors I do because they are so close together. Make sure to check What year is your truck is in the parts corresponding with those years. Please like and subscribe. If you have any questions feel free to leave them below. Thank you

Just replaced the water pump on my ‘15 expedition because this video gave me confidence to do it. Ordered all the parts in the description for $168 off rock auto then had to go back and order more motorcraft orange coolant. The expedition radiator drain is on the passenger side hidden pretty well and filling it back up only took 2 gallons. Overall it took me 3.5hrs to complete for the first time at home. I also bought the Husky power ratchet at home depot for $80. Worked perfectly and it’s half the price of the bigger name brands.

Excellent video, did it to my 2013 f150 last weekend Couple tips, I put some rags around hood latch and duct taped so that when leaning over the rad didn’t get constantly jabbed, took out thermostat when still mounted on engine but didn’t install it until putting back together as it was easier to install housing, if you gently rock the housing you can get it separated from the crossover pipe without it coming off from the back of the engine.

Completed this job on my 2015 F150 EB last night. Upset that it failed at 92k miles and only 5 years, but its really not that bad of a job. Took about 4-4.5 hours including a test drive and I did everything by hand and took my time. I did not have to remove the air intake pipe that feeds the left (passenger side) turbo. Might save someone 10-15 minutes. I also took a garden pump (with a clean hose) and pumped out the coolent behind the water pump cavity after taking the thermostat housing off and probably got an extra gallon of coolant out. The pipe that connects to the rear of the engine under the intake also came out on me, but with new o-rings and some o-ring lube it went back in no problems on reassembly.

Great video! Just did my water pump and thermostat on my 2013 ecoboost. Almost identical to this procedure. I noticed that the clamp on the passenger intake pipe was blocked slightly by the frame. I ended up not removing the pipe and just kind of "moved" it and used a bungee cord to keep it pulled away. Unfortunately i forgot to pull the hose on the vacuum and broke the vacuum stem. So now i gotta fix that lol. Thank you again 🙏

Thank you for the thorough write-up. I have a 2012 and the reservoir is in a different spot, but everything else is nearly identical. What the video doesn't show is that you can hook a drain line to the red coolant drain fitting on the radiator so that coolant doesn't dump everywhere (it will still dump everywhere from the block when the water pump is removed though). I was able to get the thermostat housing off without the crossover pipe coming out by using a flathead screwdriver to hold a tab of the crossover pipe in place while wiggling the thermostat housing off. Another tip - you might as well clean the throttle body as well, since you already have it removed. As silly as it sounds, the hardest part for me was getting the thermostat hoses off and then back on. Those spring clamps will drive a normal guy insane, especially when they're a decade+ old and there isn't much tool clearance.

My 2012 f150 EcoB 3.5 Had a knocking rattle, no warning lights, no performance issues, dealer found it to be the water pump, $600+ to replace. I’ve replaced water pumps on side by sides and an old Chevy and take car to clean each part removed, replace belts, rings, anything touched really. I didn’t think to ask about replacing the belt, rings and such today, they are completing it tomorrow, Hope the dealer is as conscientious as you. PS it is 1/4/2022, ford water pumps are on back order till July, so installing an aftermarket pump that does not include a labor warranty, makes me worry I’ll have to take a day to do this next time. If it took u 3.5 hours, that’s 8 for me! Very nice video

(He removed 4 bolts from the original pulley). Completed a replacement after reviewing your video several times. Two glitches..... 1. getting all the parts on a Sunday. 2. Left the intake hose to the throttle body loose which three a low turbo boost code. I tried not to panic as I popped the hood, but saw the hose was off.

Thanks for the video! Couple of thoughts for people doing this job. Just accomplished it today. 2012. A few differences. I avoided taken off some of the ductwork for turbos and instead just worked around them. Definitely recommend watching part 4 of Fordtechmakuloco's timing job videos. He has to take off and put on the water pump of course for the job and in part 4 he provides torque specs and torque sequence. I recommend following those guidelines when torquing bolts that have seals and contain liquid. It's not complicated... But there is a right way to bolt both the water pump and the thermostat housing back on. Thanks again. You helped me out immensely.

Great video. Just did the water pump replacement on a 2016 F150 EB with 65k miles. Steps were exactly the same as the 2015 you did. Breaking loose the air ducts took some time as it is hard to get any leverage. Putting everything back together was easier than I thought. The pipe from the left turbo to the intercooler was the worst. The tip on reaching behind the manifold to guide the pipe was great. I just had to push it down some and it slide right in. Took about 5 hours. Bought the water pump from Rockauto. Total cost including coolant and gaskets was about $180. Stealership wanted over $800 P&L.

What happened to the good old days when you didn't disassembly half the engine just to change a water pump or thermostat.

you think this is bad? The lateral mount version of this engine has a timing-chain driven water pump. This is only mildly more difficult than replacing the pump on a GM 3800 series. The lateral mount 3.5L you have to pretty much drop the drive train out of the vehicle.

I wish people would understand that only the engines put in the Taurus and Flex had internal water pumps. Seems to be a big thing people hate about these engines which is not an issue in the trucks.

2018 3.5 Dealership said my water pump bearing were shooting out grease and needs to replace pump. With the impeller being inside the pump, would bearing grease release externally? No noise from pump. Oil residue on passenger side wheel well. Great video. Dealership wants 2k +. I’m not mechanically included but will give it a try. Thank you very much!

thats nothing- look up the flex with 3.7 water pump- gotta remove the cradle/engine, disassemble the engine as water pump is internal and timing chain driven... look at the oil pump belt drive on a new 1 liter- its inside the oil pan, and behind the timing chains...full teardown to change a darn belt. Ford...better ideas? LOL

Is this the same for a 2012 F-150? The intercooler pipe removal for a Lariat is different. At 3:27 removing the lower part requires removing the clip that you see where the greenish-blue line on the right side. So far that's the only difference except now that I'm doing this NOTHING has been as easy as you show. EVERYTHING is a fight to get it off. By far this is the hardest job I've ever done on any car and that includes rebuilding an engine. That was somewhat easier than this. I appreciate everything you showed, it has helped except with the frustration.

Great Video. The only problem I’m having is disconnecting the vacuum hose from the intake. It doesn’t show you doing that in the video and I unfortunately broke the piece going into the side of the intake.
