Thanks for sharing it was raining & I started my car & this fault came up. It’s dry now & the fault is gone. I just replaced my battery and haven’t driven it for 10 hours after the battery replacement. Hopefully after driving for 30 miles it the fault will disappear

Thanks for the great content! I Have the problem, that the power steering fell out many times for a few seconds and the battery voltage error did show up on the dash. Now the power steering is off completey and the power steering error shows up on the dash permanently. Even when I erase all error codes with my bluetooth ODB. I changed the battery, but the problem is still there. The people at ford here say that the whole control unit has to be replaced now. Is there no way to reprogram it?

My 2012 ford focus looses power assisted steering if I leave the car running without moving or I’m in stop and start traffic, but if i keep the car moving, particularly on the motorway the assisted steering won’t fail. If the issue had been triggered prior then I drive it at +40mph for a consistent period of time the assisted steering will return. The fault code is always a communications fault reading. Thoughts?

Hi great video well presented,my 2016 Jaguar F pace Jaguar is described by the Mot inspector as the steering is notchey ,in my words on the road when driving at any speed and on stands with both wheels off the ground when turning the steering wheel left to right and back the other way its light the goes heavier at a certain point the goes lighter.It has been checked for cracks and possible water ingress none found, it has not produced any fault codes?also had both track rod ends replaced.This is costing me a small fortune in and out of the work shop. any Idea's would be very grateful as two garages and a few quid later I am back to square one.

2013 Ford focus no warning light about the power steering but power steering is locked due to freezing temperatures. The power steering will not unlock until the temperature of the engine gets right in the middle between cold and hot. Sometimes 45 minutes to an hour

Good video. 2017 Focus, Steering Assist Malfunction message, steering wheel turning but road wheels didn't! Switched off, restarted, ok, drove a short distance, stopped to reverse in drive and no connection between steering wheel and wheels again! Recovered to dealer, under warranty,no fault codes found nor reason for the fault! Key not found message has been appearing randomly since buying 6 months ago, gauges all pulse down then up every 20 seconds when switched off. Been at dealer two weeks now and still no solution. Wife was driving when this happened and is now refusing to drive it ever again. Any ideas?

Thanks for these videos great! I hope you might be able to advise (or someone reading these comments) please? My steering rack needs to be replaced on a 2012 Ford Grand C-Max due to getting the error code U3000:53 Fault Code. I have purchased a reconditioned steering rack and will fit it shortly. One potential issue my mechanic told me, is the alternator is charging the battery at 14.9V (sometimes up to 15.1-3) I believe the normal tolerance is 14-16V. Although he said this could be the Ford Smart Charge system for higher voltage. The battery is only just over a year old and has been checked and working correctly, it is a genuine Ford battery. The alternator was taken out and tested and that had no issues. Do you think a voltage around 15 would have any impact on fitting the new steering rack? I'm concerned this would cause new fault messages and cause the steering rack to fail again leaving me with a new bill to pay. Which is something I don't need this time of the year. Cheers

The battery reading 14.9v when the alternator is charging it with the vehicle running is a normal reading, so it should have no impact when fitting a new steering rack.

This is probably a dead post, but... I have 2013 focus SE 63k mi. I was attempting to clear all of the battery connection points of paint and caused a spark under the hood. I subsequently removed the battery lead, finished up, put everything back together and now have no power steering and it wont come out of park. The day before everything was perfect, no noises, leaks, no warnings of any kind. checked the f40 fuse, it's fine.

Hello, I had my power steering go out in my 2015 Ford Focus ST (USDM market) this morning on my way to work. After work, I tore some things apart and found that it was an 80 amp stud fuse within the high current battery junction box (the panel at the front of the battery box). I replaced the fuse and it worked fine for about 9 minutes of driving, and then it went out again, one again reading "power steering assist fault" on my dash. What could keep blowing this fuse? I'm at a loss, thanks.

I just got a notification about this comment so I'd figure I'd update it. My buddy and I went around continuity testing all the wires and determined it had to be a short within the rack, after replacing the 80amp stud fuse again and it only lasting about 45 minutes. Granted, my battery was shot too, only holding 9V with a dead cell within the battery. I ordered a new power steering rack from LKQ and just dropped the front subframe from the car yesterday. Upon doing so, it was clear that the harness that runs to the EPAS was rubbing on something and also was burnt. One wire that plugs into the EPAS within that harness was only half held together. Obviously that was the issue, but it was impossible to visually inspect that harness without dropping the whole front subframe. (EPAS rack & swaybar are attached to this and come out with it)

Got MK2 focus RS. Suddenly after being sat in the garage for a few weeks on a Ctek charger I come to start it and an getting a load of codes. Power steering Malfunction, abs speed sensor front offside, rear near side failing amongst others. ABS, traction, red ! All lit up on the dash. Changed battery which I'm sure was ok anyway, didn't fix. Removed dash pod and resoldered main plug contracts. Still doing it. What can it be?

I’m planning on picking up an early Mk3 Focus, and I was wondering if it was possible to bypass or disable the power steering either long term or short term in the event that it were to fail. Similar to how hydraulic power steering can be disabled by looping the hydraulic lines and using a shorter accessories belt.

I'd love to bypass the power steering as well. I'm going to try in the near future as mine (2014 Focus) sounds 3x too loud when in use, so I know it's going to fail me randomly at some point. If anyone knows why this shouldn't be as straightforward as cutting the belt btwn pinion and electric motor off or maybe also removing the hardware the belt attaches to, please drop some knowledge!

It could be a problem with the power steering unit, however we would recommend scanning the vehicle for fault codes to confirm this. If your battery light is also appearing then we would recommend getting the battery tested for state of charge and state of health, as it could be causing all the other symptoms you mentioned.

After an alignment (wanted to get the steering wheel back to center) from an independent shop, the steering was darty and unpredictable in certain situations. After turning and trying to come back to center, the steering wheel would be crooked and then as it tried to get straight the car's wheels would dart either direction. While making a lane change, the car would dart further into the lane then I was telling it to. The Dealer is saying I need to spend $3,000 because my steering angle sensor is having a hard fault. They want to replace the rack and pinion?? Any help is appreciated. I simply can not afford this and have no idea what to think.

I've replaced my steering rack 3 times now in the last month. On start up, if I don't turn right, the steering is heavy when turning left next. Once I've turned left its fine again until you the car starts again. I've now got the fault code U0428. Any ideas?

Our C Max has just had a third steering rack fail. The most recent failure was preceeded by several months of occasional failure of power steering on start up. After restarting the power would return. The battery was replaced as a possible cause but made no difference. Could something other than water be causing the failure given that there are never any warning codes or lights triggered?

Hi, thanks for the kind words. The fault codes in the video should be the same for a C-Max yes. And if you have replaced the battery and are still having the fault codes appear, then it is likely that your steering rack is water damaged and may need to be replaced.

@@brookado Unfortunately U3000 usually indicates a water damaged torque sensor on the module side of the rack, and we aren't aware of a company who will repair just the module. Hi. Unfortunately as this is a product line we don't re-manufacture, we aren't aware of the exact cause of the code U0131, but it isn't something we normally see when water ingress causes the steering rack to fail. As you are getting a fault code related to battery voltage, the first thing we would recommend checking would be the battery's state of charge and state of health. If that checks out ok, then it could be that something is causing the power steering module to not communicate with the ECU, so we would recommend testing all the wiring and grounds to the EPS module: www.obd-codes.com/u0131. It sounds like something is causing a lack of communication from the power steering module to the ECU, so we would recommend testing all the wiring and grounds to the EPS module: www.obd-codes.com/u0131. Hi. Those fault codes normally indicate a problem with the power supply to the power steering unit. We would recommend checking your cars battery for state of charge and state of health, and potentially replacing the battery if required. I’ve had the low battery voltage error before but was able to set the unit right with IDS. The issue is intermittent when the weather is hot. Since battery performance is degraded in extremely high temperature should I replace the Ford OEM battery with something better?

Hi. Without any fault codes it is difficult to say what could be causing the fault. Is it just the fault warning message you are getting or is the power steering not working i.e difficult to turn? Have you checked the batteries health? If it is an old/faulty battery it could be causing the fault to appear intermittently, otherwise it may be a problem with the power steering pump or the rack itself. Cheers

Hey, I have the power steering fault message and no power steering at all. Hasn’t gone out intermittently at all, just went to go drive my car one morning and the power steering is gone, tried driving it around the block to see if it came back, no dice. I have had the neighborhood rabbit chew up wires in my engine bay before, but the chances of that feel astronomically low. Any ideas?

Without that it would be difficult to diagnose what the cause could be, and the codes could show a that there is an incorrect voltage being received by the EPS which could cause the issue. We would recommend checking the car batteries health as well, even though it is unlikely in your case as it is normally an intermittent issue at first. However it is the easiest thing to check. It unfortunately sounds like either the belt inside the steering column has broken suddenly, or damage to the torque sensor etc, which will mean the steering column will need replacing/re-manufacturing. But I hope it is the neighbourhood rabbit so its a less expensive fix for you! Thanks

Hello, I got the "steering assist malfunction" error. Checked error codes, found battery voltage low, replaced battery, error code disappeared. Problem remained, still "steering assist malfunction" intermittently, error code: U0131:00-2F Any idea?

Hi. Apologies for the delayed response. Unfortunately as this is a product line we don't re-manufacture, we aren't aware of the exact cause of the code U0131, but it isn't something we normally see when water ingress causes the steering rack to fail. It could be that something is causing the power steering module to not communicate with the ECU, so we would recommend testing all the wiring and grounds to the EPS module: www.obd-codes.com/u0131. If all the readings check out ok then we would recommend contacting a power steering specialist as they may be able to assist you further. Thanks

Rac gave me an error code od c102d and they rest the code and it got me going again . But did it would happen again . Just booked into a garage

Hi. The code C102D is usually caused due to water ingress occurring on the module side of the steering rack, which causes excessive mechanical resistance. If water ingress has caused the fault then unfortunately it will re-occur resulting in you needing to replace the steering column. Apologies.

Hi. If you are able to scan the vehicle for any fault codes then that would aid the diagnosis. However, the problem being intermittent is a common sign of a poor battery, either state of charge or health, so we would recommend checking this first to see if it is the cause of the problem. Cheers

Hi. Unfortunately if the error is being caused by a water ingress issue then the damage is usually none-repairable. There are other things that can cause a powersteering failure, such as a faulty battery, so make sure to complete a thorough diagnosis before condemning the unit. We had a guy change the steering rack , and we simply took it to a shop where they did an alignment (it was badly needed) It worked fine for over 2 years and it failed again. Sitting in the garage now, gonna try and do the replacement myself this time. Ford made a piece of junk with this focus.

Hi. Unfortunately we normally see the U3000-53 fault code when water ingress has damaged the module side of the steering column beyond repair. However as this isn't a product line we re-build, you may be able to seek help from a power steering specialist.

I wouldn’t say to stay away any more than any other car. Even the legendary Toyota 4AGE had oil burning issues. Power steering is just the Focus’s Achilles heel. Same for the Automatic transmission. If driven carefully, they can last quite a while. So long as you drive it like a manual and not like it has a torque converter.
