Ford Ranger Raptor vs Jeep Wrangler Rubicon vs Suzuki Jimny 2019 off-road review

We've put the Suzuki Jimny up against the Land Cruiser Troopy and the Jeep Wrangler before, but this time it really has its back against the wall.
That's because the tiny little off-roader that could is now going up against two big name (and just big in general) players in the off road space. We're talking about the Ford Ranger Raptor, which has been tuned for the dunes, and the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, arguably the most hardcore off-roader you can buy straight off the showroom floor.
Which is the best 4WD you can buy? We put these three models through their paces across a mix of terrains to find out.

this review sounds like there is bias against the Suzuki. I've had a couple of Suzuki and they have been the best! capable off road and fun to boot, well built, reliable and all round excellent value. considering the price and the fact it did actually go everywhere the others did with street tyres, it's the winner for me.

liz Copeman, not at all. The Jimny is very capable and there's a lot to like about it. But in this trio on this test, its shortcomings were obvious. A few mods (tyres, suspension) would improve it. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. - Crafty

After all is said and done the Jimny went everywhere the other two money pits went....with road tyres at that. The Jimny is just amazing. Imagine if Suzuki spent a little more on it...better tyres, a locking dif...wow, it would be nigh on unstoppable. Plus I like its looks. Go Jimny!

Ein Felder what makes you think that traveling the CSR solo is the first priority of every 4wd buyer? Jimny philosophy is small, simple, reliable, cheap, excellent off road. It fills those criteria in a niche market. What else fills all of these rolls that is currently available? It’s small but don’t confuse that for being a toy. It’s proven itself here on street tyres.

Did you get it right? I don't think so. Starting with 20psi in the Jimny tyres when specified pressure is only 26 psi, you should drop tyre pressure by the same percentage.

If l wanted to carry tools and tow 3 tons l would choose the Ford Ranger, if l wanted a hard core off the showroom floor offroader l would pick the Jeep Rubicon, if l needed a small easy to drive and park in town 4x4 that could carry what l needed l would get the Jimny.

Did he say the Rubicon has a 1 star safety rating, and the Jimny a 3? How on earth could the jeep be so bad. Ontop of that, tromped by the Jimny. Also notice the 100 series at 4,38. In 15 years you would be lucky to see either of the trio tested as the go to vehicle for getting the crew around.

Nearly part exchangedo my new jimny for raptor glad I didn't it's superb and ultra reliable and cheap to run it'll be still going when others are in scrap yard. The jeep n raptor are fantastic but cost mega money to buy n run novelty wears off they're also way to complicated

Lots of Jimny fans here who apparently don't have many friends or kids to bring with them on offroad outings. The Jeep and Ford can take you, your kids, your dog and all their gear anywhere with CONFIDENCE and in comfort. Usually you get what you pay for. Also, Jeeps will last for many decades and still be cool. You can buy one and keep it for 75 years. You'll have to buy 3 Jimnys to do that.

The jimmy is good but on road you have to make some sacrifices. In my opinion the Jeep is the best one for the money excluding the jimmy since it didn’t come to the USA but the price needs to be better when considering a Jeep or ford truck

Bad review sorry... no real talk about the reliability and the electronics witch is always a hot spot for failures in modern 4×4's. Bajahma mode, disconnecting sway bar etc... Are litle sweet things to have(i had it also in my previous car) but its nothing for people that won't to be patronized be the car. An other point to consider is the prize for a new set of tiers and aftermarket parts between the litle car and a large car. my chose the jimny for sure.

Firstly tyre pressures... setting a 1.1 ton vehicle's pressures to the same as a 2.3 ton vehicle is a joke. Rather set all pressures to half of what the manufacturer recommends for road use. This a workable pressure in most off road conditions. Secondly the Traction control is set to run at higher speeds than you would use in another vehicle. No the Jimny is no where near as refined and smooth as the big vehicles, but when they run out of talent, the Jimny will keep on going.
@carsguide
@carsguide 4 жыл бұрын
Victor Rundle, the Jimny's road tyres set at 13psi (half of recommended minimum road-use pressure) might have given it a modicum of extra traction (but I doubt it in those conditions on those tracks), but dropping tyre pressures certainly wouldn't make the Jimny any less precarious in deep ruts and holes, wouldn't give it any more ground clearance or wading depth, and wouldn't be any sort of substitute for a diff lock. The point of the vid is not to run down the Jimny but to show all of the vehicles' strengths and weaknesses, to see which one is most comfortably capable off-road. As I mention in the vid, aftermarket tyres and suspension would make the Jimny even better than it is as standard. I like it, it's quite capable and a lot of fun. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate you taking the time. - Crafty

@@carsguide As regards wading depth, I think Suzuki is just playing it safe. It will quite happily ford water 700mm or more. But like with any other vehicle you run the risk of damage to wheel bearings, alternator, starter etc. It also doesn't have diff breather extensions, so the diffs are likely to take on water. I've done a couple of mods to mine (50mm lift and 235/75R15 muddies), and it makes quite a difference in off road performance.
