It’s XLS versus XTR - and the gloves are off. In terms of sales, it’s a David versus Goliath battle. Despite the fact that these two vehicles share so much, the Ford sells almost four Rangers to every BT-50. Why?

I owned a 2014 Ford Ranger before the motor blew up with 100,000 kms on the clock. Ford dicked me around so much that I sold the ford ( after a $10000 rebuild and bought a BT50 2016 model. With the BT you get 95% of the same bits and pieces from a very similar car as the Ranger for about $70% of the price tag. Mazda is cheaper parts and service too. The Ranger needs a service every 10000 kms while the BT only needs one every 15000kms, I think Ford are scamming the extra ( and more expensive services). Both are just as comfortable and capable off-road but the BT has tighter Mazda handling. I drive a brand new Hilux for work, it is a great work horse heaps more expensive vehicle too but not nearly as comfortable to drive every day as the BT ( very rigid). The BT and Hilux perform in slightly different niches, these reviewers have missed that point. I love and work in a remote and rugged area and the BT is my pick for value and capability over the Ranger as my daily drive and family car and the Hilux is my pick for work horse performance ( albeit more expensive by a long way to buy, service and get parts).

Don't understand why people are so brainwashed over the Hilux. It may have been the four-wheel drive of the past but that's exactly where it was left, in the past. Mechanically it's no better then a Mazda or a Ford. You pay top dollar for a hilux and you get very little in return. People need to start opening up their minds and realizing that Hilux is not the ute it used to be.

Look man, do you go to a beautiful wine region and complain about the glass cup ? A bit Strange right same principle with 4x4 main two key factors are reliability and, durability with also another advantage is easy to work on , the rest of this flashy shit like touchscreen, and gadgets for a true 4x4 person doesn't really matter but again depends on ideal purpose of purchase of consumer In saying that toyota with few tweeks can pull serious power with good reliability but ranger transmission are lemons with also electronic issues , it all comes down to preference, if you wanna go mechanic shop once in while choose ranger but if you want a workhorse choose hilux or prados buddy

Reliability, these two are craps, have seen Hilux lasting 10x more than these. In my area you will see more and more of these broken down compared to Hilux. And have friends with both Hilux and Ranger, guess who is still driving their car even had purchased 3 years back then Ranger.

This is the best Hilux add I've seen to date, I like the way they cunningly make out that they're comparing the Ford against the Mazda then the fella comes in with "I'd probably buy a new Hilux, it's much better all round"

Cept the new hiluxs are shit...and they fall over on the road at low speeds and they catch on fire... And much more but two ways of trying to kill you is enough for today

When it comes to these, just buy what you want. Ive watched so many vids comparing the Ranger and Everest to all the others, each vehicle has something over the other. That could be price, comfort, or whatever the case. Most of the vehicles you see today will perform as good as the driver performs. All factories make a mistake now and then, yes your beloved Toyota has screwed the pooch also. I can tell you this from working on them alot, Toyota is a highly overrated.

@@Smexy_af dpf issues, rear canopy seals are useless and the rear tub will constantly get full of dirt sand etc nomatter how good of a tub cover you get, poor comfort and no good on long trips you’ll end up at the chiropractor, poor ground clearance (ford far exceeds them in this area) and is way more comfortable with independent suspension vs Toyotas 40yr old design, poor driving with nothing in the tray the back end fish tails easy, loud road noise in the cabin and poor/old suspension set up so the ride is noisier and less comfort, less power and sluggish, more expensive yet nothing has been upgraded in it, The back seats are ideal for children not adults (when paying over 70k you’d expect to fit normal sized adults in the back, only has a roof rating of 75kg which is the least in all 4x4 Ute class so those roof racks you see on them are most likely illegal and over the weight limit you see around town, does not tow a camper very well as it’s under powered (there’s plenty of KZbin videos on this) the ranger with its extra power outworks it and is more comfortable. Really the hilux is just overrated which is why Toyota jack the prices up because they know fanboy’s are Braine by them and will continue to buy them either way.

Ignoring this is an ad for Hilux. If you are thinking of buying Ranger Vs BT50, things to consider are Ford ranger service is 15,000km, 1year interval vs BT50 10,000km 6 months interval. If you do less than 15k a year service costs will be nearly double in the BT50 not to mention the hassle of getting the car serviced every 6 months. . There are more features in the Ranger.

Mazda’s service plan in NZ is capped at $200 , that’s same price for either a 2wd or 4wd Bt50, so servicing costs are not really a great concern even at two services a year and still works out a lot cheaper than the ranger , personally I wouldn’t run 15k between services, it’s only a numbers game that manufacturers are trying to outdo each other on. Diesels destroy engine oil very quickly even ford’s own service mechanics have said to me it’s better to stick to 10k servicing to get maximum longevity. And for the few extras that you get in the ford , is reflected in the 5-6k more that you pay for , but at the end of the day the less you have , the less that can go wrong .

Lifting wheels way up in the air and having trouble getting through a dead easy track does not make these cars good offroad. They are ok for building sites and touring etc. but not difficult or technical tracks.

how is this a back to back comparison when they have 2 different drivers? 1 says this and the other says that. 1 driver 2 cars, that's a back to back comparison.

I’ll take the Mazda, as it’s on road driving dynamics is just as good as the ford and the traction control system is a 20 min upgrade at the dealer and as for off road parts shown in your video clip my 2wd with diff lock on goes up similar tracks here in nz , and as for the so called alloy side steps lol they are stainless steel ! And are tucked up higher then the Rangers , Piss poor review !
