Exactly. As a Brit myself I've always been super jealous of American car design from the 50s up to the 90s. Hell even quite a few 20s and 30s designs are neat. But anyway I love the tailfin era, the malaise/big boxy eras of American car design and imo more car companies, when moving to electric, should revert to these design languages or at least corporate more elements of them into the frankly rubbish design languages we've had over the past decade, especially as aerodynamic fuel saving isn't as much of a worry with electric motors

Hunt for a deceased EV then learnt to do all your shiz from scratch. Costs go down. And if you plan to do it for the road, then document everything (obviously follow the regs of registration pertinent to your area) so you can show you did X and Y so they can give you a permit. It's not gonna be cheap, but it's not gonna be expensive either as you'd get if you'd go to a shop and have them EV it.

Chevy Bolt battery packs are cheap on ebay lightly used, you can fit several of those under the bed between the frame rails, use those to power the new Ford Eluminator electric crate motor and you might come away for under $10k. Put Eluminators under both the hood and rear axle for full time 4x4, or attach one to a 3 speed manual trans if you want some different gearing

@@orangecookie3132 back then they were trying to make it energy efficient and aerodynamic too. It was just limited by their metal working and fabrication tools. They didn't have multi layered steel panels so they had to make very thick steel to make it "safe" and thicker sheets are harder to shape and so they ended up being more boxy. In terms of functional design a modern f150 is just as functionally oriented as this if not more.

this is one of the coolest (and most underaddressed) potential market areas for EVs in the future; vintage car shapes with extremely modern powertrains to stay within or better than the current strict emission standards for motor vehicles. Old cars simply ooze class and coolness and I tell you, if I had a house with a garage for charging and a workshop, I would get that Ford converter kit and go to town on all sorts of vintage models. Super cool idea for the future. Absolutely love the vibe of this truck.

That is the thing, Ford is something of an old hand at "crates". If you knew were to look... they will just sell you an engine for your own project. My brother in laws vision is just this! He's converting a 1960 something (forgot the exact year) to electric as we speak in his garage. He's an electrical contractor business owner and has the knowledge regarding the electrical aspect as well as being handy around vehicles old and new. He has had this idea since the early 2000's but the availability of batteries and management systems, etc has been sparse. But now more and more companies are getting into this newly found industry and creating electric drivetrains for older classics. So many cool cars can be on the road again in a way they never thought possible! How many old rusted out cars that don't run, engine or transmission mission or whatever the case is. Yet to bring it back to life in a new EV age would be so amazing to see. Well done to the team that put it together!

I dream of one day being able to get an electric converted late 50's or early 60's American luxury car (doesn't really matter whether it is a Cadillac, a Plymouth or something else), because they seem absolutely perfect as electric cars: designed specifically to go around 55 mph for hours on end, in extreme comfort, and the engines and gearboxes are likely so heavy that even a long range conversion wouldn't change the weight noticeably, especially combined with a more modern AC system. And we all know that electric cars are most efficient at lower speeds, which these are so well suited for.

Apparently, for Jerryrigeverything's military hummer conversion, all he had to do was go to the dmv and pay $10 for them to officially say it's a legal electric vehicle to drive on the road. So maybe not that difficult
@thomaswalton8605
@thomaswalton8605 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrE_ there are different rules for what vehicle manufacturers are allowed to ship and what is allowed to be on the road, as auto regulations continue to change, people are not expected to modify there existing vehicles slightly to meet them. Not are there rules that age vehicles out of eligibility to road worthiness, aside from state inspections.
@milkyy4168

@@MrE_ I don't think any company can just pay the dmv 10$ to make a car road legal, electric or not. Plus these old trucks haven't been in production for over 50 years, hard to believe ford has the tooling and factories to produce such a niche car.
@KinaestheticDmaw
@KinaestheticDmaw 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrE_ That is because the military hummer chassis is ironically enough, road legal. He had to pay $10 because he had a drivetrain/engine swap, but that doesn’t affect its ability to be road legal (tied to chassis). For Ford to introduce a new “old” platform like this, with a brand new chassis, it would have to go through full certification before sale.

I assume that a conversion from old body parts with new system wouldn't easily work under the banner of a 'new' vehicle due to the additional safety features that have since been mandated, so I think it'd be pretty difficult to keep the body the same and not beefing it up with crash structures or airbags etc, hence why Ford probably isn't planning for this to go into production as is
