You want the Airbag to open quickly in a severe crash so that it is simply an "air-filled cushion" by the time you get to it. It is you hitting it, not it hitting you. Unless you are unbelted, then it IS IT HITTING YOU! (Upwards of 200 mph in a severe crash). That is why wearing your seat belt is a vital part of interacting with a vehicles airbag in a positive manner. I can only do its job of slowing down your body if you do yours and give it time to open up by wearing your safety belt!

Better to have that force going into the windshield than jamming back at the occupants. Of course this airbag is a bit aggressive by 2013 standards. But for a mid-late 1990s airbag it was actually a good design. March 19, 2013

Chris, just curious, what do you mean by this statement? The seat belt is a vital part of you interacting with an airbag in a positive manner. The seat belt slows you down allowing the airbag to open so it can absorb your forward momentum, like a stunt man jumping off a 9 story building. What does he land on? An airbag.

Because an accident happens in less time than it takes to blink, so the airbags NEED to go off quickly enough to cushion the blow.

i don't even remember it hurting cause of the adrenaline that was rushing through my body. It didn't hurt till the next day and i was unbelievably sore
