Beautiful wagons, I used to drive on in the early 80's subcontracting to B.R.S on the Ford contract I loved every day going to work. There's Nothing more satisfying as doing something you enjoy. Transcontinental 290 Cummins big cam. Drivers respected each other back then. truck drivers of today, have lost that comrade ship You try to join a motorway from a slip Rd and they all close up, to say your not getting in front of me. My time to retire me thinks.

Its the way of the modern world unfortunatly, i am a long time motorcyclist and its the same story, used to nod at each other, aways stop for someone broken down but now lots of bikers are the type who ride the £20k bmw's and look down at other bikers. But there are still decent wagon drivers out there, alot of it is down to the attitudes instilled by the big companies were you are a steering wheel attendent. I drive for a small outfit were we can still be wagon drivers with the gaffer giving the orders not a trumped up youngster in the traffic office who has never sat in a wagon. But its still a good job, its better than sitting in an office 9-5 with people you cant stand to be around. We get to drive 500bhp trucks, the scenary changes, we can fart when we want without pissing someone off and we have kettles in our cabs, its not all bad😁

I miss trucks like these. I'm from '68 and just missed this era of truck driving. Don't wanna say I don't like modern trucks but I just rather like to drive the classics. It's real driving and the trucks of that time had more character. I miss that...

One of the first trucks I ever worked on.... 4435 6X4 was such a nice truck to use and had plenty of room in the cab. Was a bit chilly in the winter when doing tramping but if you had the sides decked out properly it was all good.

It's a shame these Fords didn't last long, they were great, drove well and delivered the goods. A massive step over the D series and so much better too, less engine noise in cab, more comfortable and a joy to drive.

No option but to double declutch up and down the box. The 9 speed Eaton, or Fuller, gearbox had no synchromesh - always tagged a Crash Box, for obvious reasons! But a quick gearbox. If fitted with the Lipe Twin Plate clutch, the clutch brake was great for snappy up changes, but the clutch pedal load was heavy to say the least!

I owned an N reg Transcontinental also with the 250 Cummins ( non turbo) It was originally a Ford test vehicle wit GKN in Birmingham . It was a long wheel base version, and eventually when the engine let go we discovered a few differences with the pistons and big end set up, turned out to be an American spec motor not a UK built one. We up dated it to a 275 with a turbo.. I eventually sold it to a guy doing mainly UK to Greece work,. He tilted the cab while delivering in Greece to steam clean the motor, unfortunately he'd left his stove alight which caught the cab on fire and burned it out, a sad ending to one of the best motors I've owned and driven...

Watched another video and thought I'd recognised the tunnel. Video has double interest for me. Most family relations still live in area around Beaminster/Broadwindsor/Crewkerne. Also grew up in era of Conti with my Dad driving Atki's, ERF, Foden, AEC, etc on bulk tipper, sheeted general and chemical tanker in East Anglia.

I well remember this appearing in Oswaldtwistle as a 4-wheel rigid chassis cab in the early 90s, and the being cut down to a tractor. If I remember rightly, some ERF bits were used in the conversion. It had originally been built with a van body, carrying test instrumentation for calculating bridge stress, or something similar

To be honest I know very little about HGV'S but remember these as a youngster and marvelling at their size being smaller it almost seemed gigantic. I may be wrong but I recall reading once the driver sat almost 10 feet off the ground but couldn't swear to it but still a lovely truck in my opinion

The cab is the Berliet KB 240 cab, 240 stands for 240 cm width of the cab, these were shipped to Amsterdam where they were installed on the assembly line of FORD Amsterdam where the Continental was made. Berliet TR 280 and Renault R series have the same cab, as a matter of fact an Algerian truck builder used the cab till a few years ago.

Regardless what you drive in life, everybody wants to overtake you. Going far and getting no where. It really is gone that and this pathetic. This is why government make rules and boundaries almost every week. Putting that one side.... Volvo f89 is my ultimate winner. Power , and a handsome mean look with a magnifying beautiful smile of a gorgeous woman.

This is a MK 1 version, the Ford letters were removed and replaced by the blue oval badge, so that the owners could put their own logo pride of place. I remember reading that they ultimately failed because they had been designed for a new maximum weight limit that never arose, I think it was designed to pull up to 38 tonnes, but I might be wrong on that. But building a truck to pull this higher weight, that never happened, killed it off because it never match the fuel efficiency of trucks designed to pull a lower weight. It was a flawed genius

Hi Steven, I was under the impression they designed for the ADR regulations that were being implemented by the EEC in the early 70s. For the first few years of production the wiring was earth return which could be very troublesome. A lot of the early ones were plagued with wiring trouble which put a lot of buyers off. By the time they changed to negative earth they already had a bad rep. I drove a few of the older ones and never had any trouble, I loved em

Forgive my ignorance but what was the reason behind fitting 3 seats in the cab? Access to the lower sleeping bunk (If one was fitted) would be almost impossible so 'double crewing' doesn't seem to have been an option.
