Yup. Same platform (frame) as the 4runner, which also comes in 2wd. They all have decent clearance, so are pretty capable. Matt hates all traction control, but Toyota’s ATRAC is actually very good at getting unstuck.
@JohnSmith-sh1zg Жыл бұрын
@@evoltapdoes the 2 wheel version have Atrac? I wouldn’t guess. The Atrac system will work with the rear diff lock active at the same time only in the 08’ model and newer. That’s with the 4wd model mind you. I don’t think the models before 2010 have the ability to turn off traction control unless they are in 4Lo. If you want to run with traction control off in the older models you have to shut the vehicle off and disconnect a plug at the brake booster under the hood. Then when you turn the vehicle back on you’ll have no traction control and better yet your ABS is deactivated. You don’t want ABS on in the dirt especially in a FJ cruiser. I don’t how the diff lock in the 2wd models work when there is no transfer case. Would be nice if they work driving faster in the 2wd models since all they have is 2Hi.

I'm surprised too. I had no idea.

@@JohnSmith-sh1zg it seems the 2wd FJs and 4Runners just have TRAC and maybe LSD. I would assume the TRAC is just the 2wd version, as it exists on Toyota cars too? @@Robert_J_Dyer_Photography I'm with you. The vehicle is clearly designed for off-road use so why would they make a two wheel drive option? If you want something for in the city or the school run there are plenty of other options better suited to a life on asphalt. Living in an area like this four wheel drive is a no-brainer.
@CRneu Жыл бұрын
@@stuartthurstan it likely falls under the "small truck" designation in the 2wd configuration which allows it to be taxed differently and it's cheaper. Plus people probably buy them because they get a few MPG better economy and they dont ever plan on doing real offroading, it'll live on pavement for 99% of it's life. The small truck designation is really killing the car market in the united states because it encourages really poor vehicles to be marketed. It's part of why 70% of all vehicles sold in the US are now SUVs and small trucks, they're cheaper because they're taxed less to compete with imported small trucks. People see the sticker price and think "oh i'm saving $5k!" but then they spend $20k on more fuel over the life of the vehicle vs if they just bought a small car/hatchback.

5:58 would be kinda cool if you add a second inner steering wheel to the regular steering wheel, so you can just turn the inner one left and right and steer the back wheel. If you let go a spring will return it to center and you can lock it there with a small lever or something. Mercedes had an inner steering wheel a long while back in their cars, it was used for turning on the turn signal. So you would just grab the inner steering wheel and turn it, and it would turn on the turn signal. :)

For those wondering... To help a driver get a vehicle out like that I have to explain to the driver about turning the stability control off. Most 2 wheelers don't understand that the stability control is also doing throttle control, which is why it feels like it gets in a hole and can't get out. On most of the Toyotas a short press on the trac button turns traction control off, a long press turns stab control off. If they got in with stability control turned on they can normally drive it out again themselves once they turn it off. On 4WD vehicles both are usually turned off automatically when you put it in 4L as most modern vehicle have both systems, but there are some variations in how they work on different makes and models. For example some brands have the stab control come back on once you go over a certain speed in 4H, which I think is actually pretty stupid. I do miss the old days when all you had to do was remember to lock the hubs in and turn the lockers on...
