Fordson Major transmission maintenance

Today we work on changing the oil in the transmission on the Fordson Major. Frequently changing the oil is critical maintenance for keeping bearings in working conditions and water from accumulating in the transmission. I used 40 weight diesel oil in my transmission to hopefully quiet it down some as well as add some extra cushion to the old bearings and gears.
We also used a new tool in our maintenance for the last month called the LocknLube grease gun tip. I never knew greasing could be less of a hassle until I used the new locking jaw tip!

Hay Bill, I recon the 5 gallons in the book and the 4 gallons the trans took would be the differance between US gallons and GB gallons. Dave.

It's great! I have a hard time with my hands due to a nerve condition. The simple lever and locking onto the zerks reduces frustration for me because of my hands not cooperating. Thanks for watching!

hey, i have same traktor and my transmission is low and looks like what came out of yours. is there a reason that it looks like milkshake ? is there a seal that could be bad ? is it enough to just change the fluid ? thx

Yes, change the fluid. I use straight 40 diesel oil. It gets milkshake looking due to water contamination in the oil.

hi bill, i own a fordson major and can you tell me if the gearbox and rear axle oil communicate? Because there are two drain holes, i opened them and i drained the oil. I filled oil from the hole behind the seat and the level for the rear axle is now at high but at the hole that you filled the transmision there is no oil. When i opened the cap above the tractor oil came out. Thank you

They are separate reservoirs. The transmission oil is filled and checked by the clutch pedal. There is also separate drains for each.

@@ristakis1980 The majors are very old and the discription you give sounds like the seal in the PTO drive between the gearbox and rear end has failed. When this fails the gearbox oil being higher than the rear end will find its way to the rear end until they are level. Replacing this seal is a bit of a job but can be done I believe without splitting the tractor. Most Majors I see need this done or have had it done. Check out youtube Farming Fordsons and Firefighting. He has a couple of videos on this problem and its repair

I put 90 gear oil in the back axle of mine

I was told and later verified that Ford changed the recommendation from 90wt gear oil to 30wt because the 90wt was too thick for the hydraulic pump and gear box. I chose to go with 40wt in the transmission because 2nd gear is a bit loud and heavier oil will quiet it down some. Thanks for watching.

Why doesn't the transmission have an oil filter? The hydrolic case does as well as the crankcase.

I honestly don't know why Ford (Fordson) chose not to add a filter to the transmission. I know at the time many other tractor manufacturers also did not have transmission filters.
