You can get the Motorcraft actuators much cheaper than the Ford Dealer here on Amazon-(check fitment guide)
amzn.to/1SxtNLd
One bit of advice I can give here is to use the latest Blend Door Actuators from MOTORCRAFT ONLY. Dorman units and others alike are causing more issues than the Ford units and are just not worth the limited savings.

Good informative video..thanks! I am amused at all the comments that today's cars are such junk. I remember back when I was doing this kind of work in the 60's & 70's, you were guaranteed to need to need a new heater core by 50k and many of the duct-work components were literally made of cardboard. And those bowden cables everyone likes so much...they always got rusty and seized. The vacuum systems would occasionally have a control head or an actuator leak, but for the most part they were pretty reliable. Best part about the vacuum systems is they were fail-safe; if they lost vacuum, they defaulted to hot defrost.

Stainless cable and plastic doors with brass hinges would have corrected that. The reason for actuators instead of mechanical controls in today's cars HVAC and lock systems is the usual: Saving money. By the way, which car, specifically had cardboard HVAC doors? Thanks.

I believe my 2015 Fiesta has the larger old style actuator. It’s been clicking periodically for over a year now, and it’s the second unit in the car. The first one I had replaced under warranty by the dealership. The paperwork listed parts and labor for it at $500 at the time!! A few months ago I found I could buy the unit for about $25 and that under dash access to the component is very easy… like a 30 m in minute job.

The old manual ones would bind, break and malfunction on GM, Ford, Chrysler, ect. depending on the model. They were just much less time consuming to repair. Then later, they kept the mechanical parts described and started controlling it with vacuum. So you had vaccum/mechanical. Of course, vacuum pods, diaghrams would break and leak vacuum and the old rods would still break free from where they were attached... You see, the more things change, the more they stay the same in many regards

After 40+ years of working on vehicles, engineers for GM says 5,000hrs of life. But silkscreen resistance material and contacts & small gear teeth fail. They use a separate "Pot" gear driven, but use a 2 wire software that counts high-low current flow to figure positions! Then if block, it backs off and try's 3 times to clear obstruction then stop, set code. You find straws, toy parts & short pencils blocking the door. The one guy told me he was forced to retire said new college kids make mistakes we learned 30 years ago. A high number of failures trigger a flag to have dealers save and send back in w/info. If redesigned and not a class 1 safety issues like seat belt anchor comes out, then a new parts is made, TBS created and becomes a "Second Design" with new P/N. Except for old cable type, HVAC defaults to defrost. This is a DOT rule! But in the early 90's, 15 minute headlamp was a rule. That is gone on some Fords that require the front bumper gets removed and 3 hrs later, ready to go! Wow! DK, ASE Master Tech since 78, retired.

I replaced two of my blend door motors on my 2013 F150 King Ranch about a month ago. One was behind the radio and the other was on the bottom of the heater assembly on the passenger site. About a month later and in the middle of the Colorado Blizzard of 2021, the clicking was back and my blower motor started to make a warbling sound too. I pulled the lower passenger side blend door motor, turned on the truck, put in the fuse and the blend door motor continuously turns clockwise (which is evidently bad for plastic gear teeth and blend door shafts). When I replaced the blend door motors the first time, I did this same test and saw the motor go back and forth and then stop. I got another new blend door motor and it continuously turns clockwise too. As for the blower motor noise, I pulled the blower motor and part of the blend door shaft was in the squirrel cage. Put my hand up where the motor was mounted and the vent door easily moves back and forth, so imagine that is the shaft that broke and ended up in the fan. My question is what controls these motors because my blend door motors are new and I still have the clicking, now with the added feature of breaking blend door shafts.

Me too. 2014 f150 and my actuator above the gas pedal that controls the floor/dash/defrost mode has been replaced 3 times, so I'm convinced whatever controls the actuator is the problem rather than the actuator itself. I'd love some insight here.

Manually set to heat for winter. 5/30/20: unhooked battery to manually set to cold for summer. While there I hooked battery back up, unplugged the electrical on (bda), plugged back in. A/C & heat worked properly for 2 days. yesterday went to store, only heat blowing. Today I did a diagnostic test 025, but A/C & heat is working again. Checked all fuses. ps The temp control works properly when system is switching from A/C to Heat properly. Once it stops working & I go to manual I get full Hot on heat, full cold on a/c no adjustment on degrees)

Thanks for figuring why they fail. I am a fellow Ford tech who just had to replace three of these motors in my wife’s Freestar. Both temperature door motors and the mode door motor. The motors must be different for each application as they had 3 different part numbers. The only external difference is one of the mounting holes that looks like a cloverleaf is clocked 90 degrees different. One must rotate opposite to another one or through a different range of rotation.

FordTech Makuloco is spot on with his advice. The blend door actuator failed on my 2011 Ford F-150 about three years ago. It has just now failed again after disconnecting the battery ground to work on the SRS. It makes a loud repeating popping sound. I replaced the actuator with a "Lifetime Warranty" Dorman actuator three years ago. You can get by with not going all the way with hot or cold until the power is disconnected. Then it tries to find itself and you get, "pop, pop, pop", even when the engine isn't running. In the next few days I'm going to install a redesigned Mortorcraft actuator. Sure hope that one lasts the life of the truck. I won't be willy nilly moving that control around. I'll leave it at certain positions and rarely turn it. That should make it last longer or at least I hope so!

Is there a separate vent actuator for the back (there are separate controls above the rear view mirror)? Or is the one under the dash for both the front and back? And the flaw was that no matter what individual part failed, you had to buy a complete set, to get it all working again! Are you old enough to recall REBUILDING A WORN OUT MASTER CYLINDER, OR STARTER? What about back in the day, when you had to maintain a vehicle to help keep it from breaking down? Now a days, things malfunction, for no reason at all, no matter what you maintain!! Change the oil regularly, keep your tires inflated, get the car washed every so often, and a $900 G.E.M. or S.K.I.M. goes bad, and you replace it, and have to pay someone to rewrite history to make it work!!

Had to replace the older style on my ranger, either the motor or circuit board all the gears were good. It supposedly was a common problem on older explorers too. The doors is heavy but moves pretty freely. I removed the control unit while waiting for the replacement and it was winter in Canada, I needed heat I could actually get the heat to come on by hitting the brakes hard and turning the fan speed up high at the same time and once the air flow was going it would keep the door opened for the heat setting. I replaced it with a Doorman and had no further issues.

Flawed design. As Makuloco said, the cause of failures are not the gears, even on the old units but the loss of tracking. If the tracking is lost, the motor keeps running even after it reaches the end. Something has to give, so the gears break. The metal contacts should never be used on the carbon tracks. They will eventually cut through the tracks. Being made in China, they cut through even sooner. Ford should copy a TPS design which is technically a tracking device but lasts forever.

I own a 2004 Ford Crown Victoria and did not have heat. After searching for possible causes, I read that the door actuator was probably broken. I found this post in you tube on how to test the system: Press the FLOOR and OFF buttons simultaneously, release, then within two seconds press the AUTO button. This will start an automatic diagnosis. After the diagnosis process is done (the dot circles around and error code is displayed), Press the Blue Cold button---Air Conditioner should work now.If you get a code 24 or 25 it is your blend door actuator control. My code came up 25. My first thought was "fuck an expensive repair' However, within a few second the heat was there and everything seems to be working properly now. Maybe it just had to be reset for some reason. I got lucky I guess.

The measure of a vehicle's reliability in a car often is summed up by a layman: "the A/C still works!" How much more expensive is the sensor? Look it up, scale it up, it ain't shit. They wouldn't cheap out like that, sure it's Ford but pennies for risking hundreds of $ in warranty work per vehicle? Ford also must not offer any warranty beyond 5 years. No car company wants to fix a blend door in warranty.
