This video is exactly what I do expect. Forehand clear is one of the most basic technique but mastering it takes years. Some beginners aren't patient enough to practice this skill, leading to the very slow progression. Aside from the placement, the height of clear shot is so important. Greg and Jenny, hope you can produce another video to instruct us the detailed technique of punch clear that lots of WS/XD players use and how to sharpen/simplify our clear technique. Thank you so much
@TheHi-T2 жыл бұрын
I know some people who have been playing for 10 years & still use the panhandle grip to hit clears. It is so fun to punch clear to them. 🤣 Some beginners are also hindered by having purchased a racket that is not suitable for them. Racket is for advanced level players. This is even more evident when the beginner is not taking lessons.

Great video. Your point about how badminton is perceived is well made - ask people about tennis and they'll think of the singles finals at Wimbledon, mention badminton and they'll think of that picture at 1:03. Oh, and a hint if you're practising throwing tennis balls - when you switch to your racquet don't let go, squeeze it! 🙂

all great points. a few things i'd add: 1) you probably mentioned this in other videos, but i'm not sure if you said it here, that the clear stroke and follow-though is identical to smash and drop, except for impact and how far behind the shuttle you should be. smash and dropshot variations such as slice and reverse slice can even be included in the clear, 2) as important as it is to have a stroke with a good kinetic flow of energy starting at the floor, in my view it's even more important to learn to move your body behind the shuttle, and to jump and strike from a position well behind the shuttle, with your energy coming forward, not from over your head or behind you if you can help it, as trying to clear with the shuttle behind you will cost you power and mess up your recovery (though sometimes it cant be helped), 3) as with smash and drop, it helps to jump, and this is particularly useful with the punch clear , 4) other than hitting 50-100 clears at the beginning of every warm-up, my favorite exercise is to use two shuttles and focus on accurate and identical returns under pressure, 5) i see a lot of beginners and intermediate players working very hard to clear the shuttle. they often believe it requires a lot of strength, and they find the more strength they try to use, the worse their clears become, and often, the more they clutch their shoulders. you should be able to clear to the back line almost effortlessly and completely painlessly, relying on rotation in the sequence you demonstrate @2:43 and in other videos. again, if you are allowing the right kind of kinetic flow of energy, starting at the floor, clearing to the back line should be almost effortless and require no arm strength. a good exercise is to try to clear moving though the rotational sequence as slowly as possible, tapping into the easy power that comes from rotation. try to find the point where you are rotating fully but as slowly as possible with your arm as passive as possible while still clearing to the back line, 6) clears require greater accuracy than almost any other shot, because to be effective they have to go pretty much all the way to the back line. anything short of that is giving your opponent an opportunity. thanks for all your hard work. it's always great to hear you guys discuss the sport or watch you play

Great video. Technique is important. Friends tried to convince me to stop hitting punch clears. I was winning points. They only hit normal & high clears. They tried to convince me not to smash at their flat/high clears. So opponent may dictate what shots I play? 🤣 "Stop breaking the shuttles?" "Stop lifting & clearing to me!" 😁

its amazing how important timing is the other day i went to new badminton courts with different shuttles. And my timing was messed up and in the 1st few minutes my clear only went halfway, but within a few minutes of warm up i was able to clear the shuttle to the back with no problem p.s this may just be me but ans completely false, but i felt timing has a big part into the distance of the shuttle but maybe it becasue my racket can only generate power when i hit the sweet spot of the racket.

How would you guys go about coaching a complete beginner, aged 9/10 to becoming proficient player. Is there a template or plan you would follow? eg Start building competence in the front court, drop retreivals and net play and then start building competence deeper in the court - Midcourt, finally focusing on the rear-court. Maybe you can do a video on how you would take this on.

hey jenny and greg! I've been watching you guys for almost 7 months now and you guys have been a huge help in my badminton development. I've been playing badminton every since I was 4 but I just gave up the sport for almost 9 years, but now I've gotten back into it and have been more dedicated then ever. my goal is to become a national badminton player for korea and I'm the best player at my school here in the US and I've been doing well at some tournaments so can you make a video on how to become a national player? thank youuj!!
