The issue is that Australian border people have zero understanding of Asian thinking - it is based on how they would be treated in Asia, and so it makes them very scared to declare items and hope they can get away with it - in Asia it is very very different from Australia - especially places like China, where you can simply vanish and end up dead by getting on the wrong side of the law - not kidding - in other parts of Asia there can be extremely drastic repercussions for many things that in Australia are avoided by simply making such a declaration. The forms that are handed to tourists do NOT make it clear that there is no issue if you declare something - so people will try to avoid it, rather than risk prison or worse. I have lived in Asia for a very long time and I know how they think about this kind of thing.

@@ursodermatt8809 Yep, I don't doubt that they (like every other person in the world) can have "a bad day." All the more reason to keep your demeanour pleasant and your trap shut unless replying to their questions. Even the sweetest natured official can be relied upon to get their back up when faced with some brainless entitled Karen who can't see the obvious benefit in conducting purely random checks to catch the criminal element who will be constantly varying their "Mules" and methods to probe a country's defences.

You don't have to be born and live in Canada to be a Canadian citizen. You only need one parent to be a Canadian citizen at the time of your birth (e.g. born and raised in Romania with one Canadian parent). Furthermore, much of Canada isn't English speaking (22% speak French, like in Quebec).

Idek what to say, the guy with a Canadian passport doesn't even understand what the officer said, i.e., he didn't seem to understand the term scientific examination or consequences of traveling with fake documents under the Int law. I know Canada is so diverse, and anyone can be Canadian, but I wasn't aware that anyone with a low level of English proficiency would get Canadian citizenship that easily

Probably to investigate and give her an opportunity to prove it came from a legitimate source. It's better than them outright seizing it on the spot. At least, they give time and an opportunity to produce evidence so you can get it back as she did in this case.

There was a passport issue concerning a young man from South Africa .Hours and hours and the scientific genius and others clucked like hens. Then no idea why someone had the notion to ring the mother of passport holder even though she was in SA She said what her son had said "water damage" The Genius was over looked then . Left me feeling sick to watch .Sorry to the Canadian / Romanian .You were calm and so pleasant Could it be the other guy was treated differently due to being being a white South African ?
