This is one of the episodes where it’s hard to have much sympathy for the victims. The main scammer not only did not place the bet for Mark, but pocketed his bet money as well. It seems that Jason was giving Mark poor betting advice on purpose, so the bets that Mark would place would lose, and Jason would just pocket the money instead of actually placing the bet, especially if the wager was very large. Since the bets lost anyway, Mark would never question where the money went. Once a large bet actually won, Jason told Mark to F off. That's when Mark likely figured out Jason had duped him the entire time, and probably stole a lot more than 17K over several months. You mess with people like that over major amounts of money, you can expect repercussions eventually.

That’s exactly what was happening and it’s greed that comes with the game, betting generally is bad and it turns good people to be bad, not due to their own making but due to the effects of gambling.

If Jason did not place the bet, or "forgot" to do it, then he should have just returned it. The mere fact he did not return the money means he stole it.

Wu was demanding the 17,000 that he would have won if the bet was placed, not the original sum bet (which doesn't seem to be disclosed). It's not mentioned whether he returned the original sum or not, but even if he did it would not have covered the 17,000 Wu felt he was owed. It's very possible it was returned.

A lot has been left out of this episode, Jason and his friends saw Wu as an easy target, a rich naive foreigner. Wu didn't even know the names of sports teams he was betting on.. he was clueless but wanted the rush to win. Jason would tell Wu bad betting advice and pocket the money, it was a miracle that a bet actually came off and instead of paying him, he continued the lie. Jason was a spoilt brat, his aunt gave him upwards of 250k for gambling and he refused to give 10k back to his father. His friends weren't angels either and were more or less his muscle.

@@mynewdirectcars1841 I've studied this case heaps, 'interviewed' a lot of people that were involved - even Wu's sister. Jason definitely wasn't some innocent victim as the show portrayed - he enjoyed the bad boy/gangster image and craved the attention from those younger than him (i.e. his fellow murdered comrades) In saying that though Mark Wu was certainly a bit wacky too - the guy did kill three people after all.

"They weren't bad kids". Ma'am, maybe the other two weren't the worst, but Jason was not a nice guy. He stole that guy's money and told him to shut up about it while waving a gun at him. I feel bad for your family's grief, but you can keep that "good kid" lie to yourself. Murder was not the way to handle it, but I can understand Mark's level of anger about being scammed. People die every day for a lot less than 17k.

@tonyc7301
@tonyc7301 8 ай бұрын
I think the amount is actually more than that. 17K was the winnings. The show never actually said what his original bet was. I.e., if he bet 15K at +113, that would equal winnings of about 17K. In that example, Mark would be owed 32K.
@tonyc7301
@tonyc7301 8 ай бұрын
@@Breeanna-og3js There would be no sense in filing a police report. Sports gambling online was not legal in the United States in 2003. Using an overseas service was questionable at best. I’m sure the police would not have helped him, and it might have actually created problems for Mark.

Have you seen the episode about the Russian financial advisor? It might have been new detectives or a different show, but that guy was an awful person that deserved to get whacked lol. I remember thinking am I supposed to feel sorry for the “victim” here. The guy basically ran a Ponzi scheme and stealing hard working people including his long time friends retirement money. There’s a few of these where the victim just ripped off the wrong person and learned the hard way. I remember another one where a kid was selling radio equipment and sending people cheaper radios than they bought then refused to refund them or take their calls. Eventually some nut case lost it and went and killed the kid. I don’t condone it at all but ripping people off is a good way to get killed.

To begin with, “normal kids” do not engage in ugly behavior like these three did, showing their fingers with obscene gestures to Mark; they all were racists common thieves scamming people. These guys thought that they had the upper hands on this business of gambling when in reality they did not and the three of them lost their lives when Jason doubled crossed Mark Wu and shot him. Jason wanted to pocket Mark Wu’s money, otherwise, he should have returned the money to Mark. No doubt in my mind that Jason didn’t intended to give Mark Wu his money back. I can understand why Mark was so mad, but to kill three people, obviously was wrong. Sure, his friends were jerks, including Jason, but there had to be another way to get, at least some of the $17,000 back. It's tough b/c the police will not help you, so Mark's options were limited. It's too bad Mark trusted this Jason guy that much. I really don't know what he could of done. Sad all around.

Lol. How do you know the police couldn’t have helped him? Sure, if he had no evidence, he would have been left without recourse. He could have tried suing Jason. It’s quite frightening that people like yourself seem to think killing others is the only solution, when Mark never pursued legal options. Moral of the story: before sending large amounts of money to people, get any agreement in writing.

@@RussellGreerOfficial Russell, I NEVER said murder is an option. I thought I said murder was the wrong solution, but I would also be mad, like everyone else, if I got scammed. I said dealing with a bookie is illegal to begin with, so the police will be of no help. I cannot see any attorney defending a guy who got scammed by a bookie. I can not believe you think I thought murder was an option. Best option: learn from your mistakes, take the loss, and move on in life.

Jason should have return the money that Mark Wu gave him to place a bet. That was not his money at all and the correct thing to do was to return it to Mark when he didn’t place the bet, but Jason didn’t and costed him and his two friends their lives. And Mark Wu should have taken Jason to court when the latter failed to return his $17,000 money rather than kill him along with the two friends. It is not worthy dying because of a damn bet, but it shows the immaturity of Mark Wu. Very sad case where 4 people lost their lives including Mark Wu as well. Truly tragic.

@tonyc7301
@tonyc7301 8 ай бұрын
Everyone here is missing the point. Jason stole the money from Mark intentionally and had no thought of returning Mark's money. For the show to even say maybe Jason forgot to place the bet is absurd. Also, Jason had likely pocketed Mark's bet money on previous occasions, especially on large bets. Since almost all the large bets were losing, Mark wouldn't know where the money went. Once a large best actually won and Jason told Mark to F off, Mark then figured out Jason had likely conned him the entire time. And BTW, Jason likely owed Mark way more than 17K. The show mentioned Mark had withdrawn 70K over a 4-5 month period. Likely 50K-60K were gambling losses, and let's say all but 10K-15K were large bets (And I'm probably being conservative). Jason likely only placed smaller bets through the gaming service and pocketed Mark's money on the big bets. Also, the 17K was only the winnings from the baseball bet. It does not include the original bet amount (Let's call it 10K-15K). So given everything, Jason likely stole 70K-80K from Mark. I'm not justifying the murders, but if not Mark doing this, someone else he stole from eventually would have. You steal that kind of money from people there are eventually going to be repercussions.
@tonyc7301
@tonyc7301 8 ай бұрын
@@aodhan7 There would not be a recorded call because Jason never placed the bet. Mark had no proof at all and didn't want to say anything publicly as his parents would have found out what he was doing with the money. Another thing that doesn't get mentioned here. Honor thy family is huge in most Asian cultures. For Mark to dishonor his family like that obviously was too much for him and he offed himself. Sad all the way around.
