Damn. So glad you got this sorted out. This was depressing me more than it should have. I have been stranded in the middle of nowhere (the Nevada dessert actually) with a problem I could not suss out and it really pissed me off no end. I was starting to worry that maybe I had steered you wrong in advising you to go to another shop. But the deal is, dealerships are supposed to have much more expensive and accurate diagnostic equipment than the cheap stuff we plebs buy...and those guys telling you they couldn't diagnose it (on a 6 year old van?!) was just red flagging all over the place. Looking forward to you next adventures! Keep on rollin on..

Honestly, a dealership is the last place I go for "expert" advice. I'm very fortunate to have a local mechanic who sees repair as an art form and LOVES a new challenge. And at better rates, to boot! He'll also go several steps beyond what you request, checking for common problems he knows of with your model even when you didn't ask him to check it. (At no extra charge unless he finds a problem.) Needless to say, his shop is swamped with customers, usually needing 3 weeks advance notice to schedule an appointment.
@cat3crazy3 жыл бұрын
I hear you about price gouching. I had been going to a repair shop for years thinking that they were honest. I needed some bushings for my front wheels. The cost that they quoted seemed really high, especially for only one side. I asked how much was the price of the parts. The price for the parts were 4 times the amount I could order them on line! I didn't do the install, a friend did it for me. There have been other instances where I had to walk away from some dealers/repair places. I may not know a lot about mechanical works in vehicle but, I know when someone is trying to rip me off.

The manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAP sensor) provides instantaneous manifold pressure information to the engine's electronic control unit (ECU). The data is used to calculate air density and determine the engine's air mass flow rate, which in turn determines the required fuel metering for optimum combustion and influence the advance or retard of ignition timing.

Pretty reasonable repair actually, it was just finding it. This generation of van has almost 20 years of production since 2003, commercial vehicle lines actually have money making and reliability expectations and so hog all the good engineering and resources, unlike the other cheaper product lines pumping out more disposable vehicles which may giving them a more widespread bad rep.
@BarryBranton3 жыл бұрын
Good job on finding the problem. So cool. MAP sensor = "In fuel-injected automotive engines, a manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor is used to continuously monitor the amount of air flowing into the engine, so the computer can calculate air density, adjust the amount of fuel to spray into the combustion chamber and adjust the ignition timing." And, you just replaced it. Awesome!

I was going to post this when you first bought the van, but waited ... for this. I drove these both gas and diesel. You are doing the very best you can and it will pay off. These vans are a mix of old world reliable GM with post-80s made in China tech (literally, made in China). If I see you travel to the southwestern US I will post on the fuel pumps because they have difficulty in plus 156 degree weather (F not C) on account of fuel vaporization in the upper tank and an accessory/sensor placement. All this to say, you are in a safe vehicle and you can do a lot of the work yourself because the tech is pretty low scale. Ride that learning curve! Great videos!

Its always a bummer when you have a problem undiagnosed. Glad you found a place where they actually diagnosed and found the problem!. I do suggest to everyone to not take the approach of throwing parts at problems hoping one of them solves a problem. that is usually the expensive route. Diagnose first and go on forums to find out who else had the problem and what the solution is, then spend the money on what will work to fix it. Unless you have a totally unique problem no one else had before. If no one can diagnose it first and you have to throw parts at it. Find a city with a you pull junk yard and pull the parts from junked vehicles instead of buying new parts. But you did the right thing to bring to mechanics that could tell you exactly what was wrong. That proves that all shops are not equal

Wow, just a Map Sensor. Every few years it's good to take off the intake hose, or duct. Clean or replace the air filter. Disconnect the throttle cable from the throttle body. Unscrew the three sensors on all vehicle throttlebodies; 1 M.A.P (Manifold Absolute Pressure) 2 I.A.C. (Idle Air Control) and 3 T.P.S. (Throttle Position Sensor) and clean them off. Or replace them. Then, while their off, unbolt the aluminum throttle body from the Plenum. Throw it in a dishpan (solid aluminum piece) and scrub all the carbon deposits off until it's shiny & new, inside & out. Replace it all in reverse order making sure all small vaccuum hoses (MAP sensor) are re attached so there's no vaccume leaks that can change the idle. And your good to go!
