I can tell you Wizard that you should look into the injectors first. They are very common for these Jags. If one fails stuck open, it will cause the high-side fuel system pressure to DIP. The high pressure pumps aren't that common to fail on these (compared to injectors), especially both at the same time. Injectors however, yes due to the carbon buildup from the engines. The excess smoke from the exhaust is not from the injectors being "commanded" to supply more fuel from weak high pressure pumps, but more from the actual injector being stuck open, specifically on cylinder number 8.

Back in ~2010s it was fairly common to see BMW's with the N54 puking out smoke like that from a stuck injector(s). It could look fairly dramatic but not all that difficult to deal with. Pull the spark plugs and look for the ones that were wet with fuel. Then replace those injectors or if the index # was too low replace all the injectors. The important part was to perform an oil change after fixing it because usually some of that unburnt fuel got into the oil, not just the exhaust. I think most of the N54 engines that ended up with a rod knock during this time it was either from hydrolocking the fuel b/c of a stuck open injector or the fuel affecting the engine oils lubrication if enough of it made its way past the rings into the oil pan.

Also repaired wiring in trunk that was putting up message of trunk ajar . . Also done fuel filter that when I blew out old one looked like chewing tobacco . . Has over 180k miles now and needs a waterpump that I will get to soon . . I daily drive it and many ask what it is since it is different than most Jags

Jags have a huge amount of bad reputation for insane repair bills but most of the time it's literally just a matter of a good mechanic or do it yourself, because the work and parts are basically in line with everything else. I own a 14 XJ and an 06 S-Type and most of the time it's pretty straight forward... nothing otherworldly but if they see you coming and can make bank I guess they will.

One must be very aware if one owns a Jaguar. My 2004 S Type needed new upper ball joints. One Jaguar parts place had them for $700 each. Another Jaguar parts place had them for only $400 each. Or I could have gone down to the local Autozone and gotten them for $174 each. Went online and checked out the usual places. Moog, Delphi and such were in the $84-87 each range. Then I found the actual manufacturer has them for $55 each. Hmm, tuff decision. It is like that for a lot of parts. For instance the ZF transmission pan/filter assembly costs $160-170, unless one buys from ZF transmissions. $58. Do you know a BMW transmission service costs $700?

When a dealer stocks up on parts or assemblies, that's a big red flag! I was in a Nissan dealer's garage recently. I saw 7 crates in one area and 5 in another. I asked about them. The 7 were transmission assemblies ready to go in and the 5 were transmission cores ready to go back. I found out they were CVT transmissions. That told me a lot! Maybe more than he thought he was letting onto.
