Hiroshi Fujioka had one starring american role that I'm aware of. The Empire Pictures film from the early 80s called Ghost Warrior. It's about a samurai (Fujioka) that had been frozen for hundreds of years and then is brought back to life, now in modern day Los Angeles.

Around this time, I discovered you close to my birthday... Now today (being just tomorrow for my birthday) I can Easily see the Tough Guy persona Segata Sanhiro/Takeshi Hongo/Hiroshi Fujioka real is in his brave heart. He was a Spokesperson, a Superhero, A martial arts master, and doing things that not even the most manly of single person Swiss Army Knives could do. Words like "Badass", and "Manly" don't even begin to describe this man. He sold more Saturns in a time of Crisis for Sega and if he could, he'd show more of his hidden potential beyond Rider Kicks towards goofy monsters every week for the longest time and taking simple tasks to the next over the top extreme just to get people to buy Sega Saturns!! Sadly, we never got the same Awesomeness for America, and PAL Territories (among many other regions), the Saturn could have stood a better chance outside of Japan and Asia. "YOU MUST BUY SEGASATURN SHIRO!!" PS: Also note the beginning and end cards of a lot of these commercials for everything in Japan. Just proves as I always say, "If it exists, it was better in Japan ;) ".

Thanks for this great comment. It’s long be be assured I read everything everyone writes. The only thing is by 11/97 the Saturn was done for outside Japan. Nothing could save it. But Segata is a great example of how dedicated Sega was to its fans which. Don’t believe the internet, Sega was popular before the Saturn and it still is! I hope you have a good birthday! I used to have all of the Segata Sanshiro CMs, the earworm Chu Chu Rocket one, and the Devil May Cry CM where the woman is beating on her boyfriend with a bouquet of flowers, eventually popping him up into the air, like Dante in the game. Segata was also very much inspired by Sonny Chiba, especially his portrayal of real life Kyokushin Karate founder Mas Oyama in the 70s films "Karate Bullfighter," "Karate Bearfighter," and "Karate for Life." The look and attitude of Segata is based on Chiba's Oyama and the forest training montage is a parody of the training of Oyama.

Well that was fantastic, its actually kinda funny how certain things seem to appear in waves online, I've seen it a few times before, but in this case Netflix just got new episodes of the show, "The Toys That Made Us" and one of them is the history of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. As they describe the prehistory to what that whole thing would eventually become, they totally go into Kamen Rider and how it essentially started the whole genre of live action superhero shows in Japan. Super glad to see Segata still makes appearances. Also fantastic archive of commercials, very cool and hilarious! I LOVE my Saturn, I was very lucky to acquire one around 1998. Its one of my favourite consoles and still works like charm to this day. It's tough to say, a lot of great memories involved with it over the years but I guess my two favourite memories (other than the day I actually bought mine) was the first time I saw the commercial for the first Panzer Dragoon game and being quite impressed with what I was seeing. The other was just a bunch of my highschool pals and I going over my buddy's place who had one and playing the living hell out of Street Fighter II, Vampire Hunter, Daytona C.C.E. and endless Death Tank matches, hahaha those were amazing days.

And to think, around the same time in the US, we got that dumb Yoshi's Island commercial where they rip off a Monty Python's Meaning of Life skit. Sega Japan comes up with this brilliant, delightful campaign with a character mythos. Talk about Sega doing what Nintendon't.

I vaguely remember him appearing on Saturn CMs as a kid. I was however on the PS camp and Segata failed to sway me to his side. The sad truth is although Saturn did enjoy greater success in Japan compared to in other regions, it firmly remained a losing console throughout its life cycle. That said, Segata's an amazing character that truly represents the turn-of-the-century zaniness of the 90s. I'm glad his legacy is still around. After watching his exploits from the beginning to end I noticed he does follow a classic hero's path pretty neatly, as he started as a troublemaker unable to control his superhuman strength (aka Early Installment Weirdness), who gradually learned to train himself, slay monsters and save the day, to eventually become a literal saviour by sacrificing himself.
@GTV-Japan3 жыл бұрын
Yea that’s interesting to think about if they planned it that way or it just kind of happened. Competition with Sony was eventually impossible. They had great games and way way more of them that’s what drives sales

@@GTV-Japan Perhaps already suggested a million times before but are you by any chance planning to do a full timeline on ads featuring Yukawa Senmu? I wonder if he had similarly interesting developments throughout his desperate attempts to revive Sega. There's something that I'm trying to piece together. After reading US gaming magazines from the 90s, I was able to live in Japan in the year 2000. The 90s magazines I read reported that Virtua Fighter and Sega 3D arcades were a phenomenon in Japan. My experience is of course anecdotal, but from my observations, Virtua Fighter and Sega 3D arcades were an absolute phenomenon in Japan. Those magazines also said that Saturn made Sega popular in Japan. From what I saw in game stores, TV ads, and everywhere else, the party was completely over by 2000... almost as if it never happened. At most, I went to several 2nd hand stores and saw a lot of used Saturn games selling for cheap (kicking myself for never buying them), along with Radiant Silvergun selling used for 9000 yen. The utility guy in his 20s who connected the gas in our house saw me playing my Dreamcast from America, he asked me if it was a PS2, I told him it was a DC, he said he didn't know what it was. Many 5th-generation games received successful and unsuccessful revivals, from the RE:make series to failed attempts to bring back Battle Arena Toshinden, but there is a very small list of Saturn-exclusive games (without an arcade version), I'm excited to learn that Assault Suits Leynos 2 is getting officially translated. If Saturn was so popular, wouldn't there be more demand to revisit the exclusive games on Sega's 6th console from the sun? Before I watched this great video, I didn't realize that Segata Sanshiro was an advertising campaign from almost 1998. Did the campaign's impression really fizzle out in a couple of years? Is it possible that Saturn's popularity was a bit exaggerated by foreign media and Sega fanatics? Would you have any firsthand accounts from the 1990s that could explain what I saw at the turn of the century?
@GTV-Japan7 ай бұрын
I would say that Sega has always been seen as an arcade company and a toy maker and is not seen the same was as people think of Nintendo, solely making home video games. Secondly Final Fantasy VII changed everything and basically wiped out everything except the PlayStation. That’s how I see it.
@gc3k7 ай бұрын
That makes sense, especially the 5th gen bombshell that was FF7. The sales figures speak for themselves, Saturn did sell millions, but Sega was regarded in the same category as SNK and its NeoGeo (which, from my observation, also had a strong cult following in early 2000s Japan), separate from Nintendo/NEC-Hudson/Sony. Thanks for the reply and the awesome retrospective!
@GTV-Japan7 ай бұрын
@gc3k it’s also that every developer moved to Sony too. Rather than a 3 way split. It was just a huge snowball effect. Certainly I knew what train I was on after that announcement
@gc3k7 ай бұрын
When you see Sony's waning marketshare and Nintendo's dominance in Japan today, it makes you wonder if Sony was the right horse for 3rd parties to support back then, instead of the 3 way split as you said By the way, did you see the tweet from Sega about a Saturn White Mini, teased on White Day?
@GTV-Japan7 ай бұрын
@gc3k I did not see that! As for Sony. It feels like there are two Sonys. The good classic ps 123 era and the new ps45 era. PS3 and 4 don’t even feel like they were made by the same company. I hate the decisions they made in recent years with the brand. We want bright colorful quirky stuff and we want BC! We want hardware innovation! As for Nintendo, the switch lite was a genius move and they will always have a kids audience anyway.
