I think people in this comment section fail to realize that goth is a subculture built around goth music. People created looks based on the music. There are many ways to look goth, and there is no concrete way of doing gothic makeup. As long as someone is passionate about gothic music and subculture, then they are goth. If everything looked the same, the community would lack originality. :)

Yeah, some of these people need to pick up a book by (Aurelio) Voltaire. Goth is what you make it. It started with music, it's grown since that time. Goth is about attitude, interests, and mood not necessarily a very specific kind of thing. Saying "If you don't do your makeup in this way, or you don't dress in this specific way, or you don't listen to this specific subgenre of music, you're not goth." is SO FAR removed from the very purpose of the gothic movement.

I didn't realize "goth" had so many limitations like most of these comments suggest. You guys are ridiculous. I used to be goth in the early 2000's. I like this makeup look. I'm turning 30 this year and I am going to try this look. Goth is completely subjective and no person can define it. I think this is artistic and beautiful makeup from a beautiful girl. Music makes the goth, but this is a goth aesthetic (minus the hair, just talking makeup here). I've been a goth for most of my life, am an elder goth, and it looks like, once again, elitist snobs are trying to dictate the subculture to others. Thank you so much for this tutorial! I basically do my makeup like this already and I recently switched from powdered black eyeshadow (that was on my cheeks and nose by the end of the day, even WITH setting spray) to L’Oreal Infallible Paints liquid black eyeshadow but I always had a harsh line at the transition because I was waiting too long to blend it. This morning I slapped a swipe on and started blending immediately and it looks AMAZING!! Thank you!! For those saying this isn’t really “goth” I call this “career goth” for when you appreciate the dreary macabre things in life but you also want to keep your job. It’s #goals and you are AMAZING!!!

Romantic goths aim to look pretty and majestic and this look would fit so well for a romantic goth. Edit: you shouldn't expect people who listen to music and read the poetry to also dress "goth". It's all about liking the music and understanding the culture. Since I love all types of music my style is a mix of black metal, goth, and punk. Let people wear what they want.

There is no such thing as "goth makeup" really. Yes, there are makeup trends that a lot of goth's follow, but the makeup itself isn't goth. Usually it's the whole package that makes it goth. If you belong to the goth subculture, anything you wear actually is goth, because you, the person who wears it, is goth. If you wear your makeup like the girl in this video, and you belong to the goth subculture, it's indeed goth. If ariana grande wore this makeup though, it wouldn't be goth because she doesn't belong to the subculture. See what I mean? Most goths I know only wear winged eyeliner and mascara, what's goth about that? Nothing! But they are still goth! Haha
