This Smith manure spreader was missing the left side step casting, so combining forging, a 50 ton hydraulic press, and some flap wheel shaping, I can come up with a viable solution for the missing step mount from the remains of the right side step that was still there. Thanks for coming along.
Spring for mugs, tee-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies.

Dave says: "I wonder if I could fabricate this" and I get comfy because I'm about to watch a chunk of cold-rolled steel get turned into a 100-year-old iron casting. Mr. Engel mooshes steel around like a sculptor mooshes clay! Every visit to the wainwright's/wheelwright's shop is a good visit.

The thing is, that twisted piece of flat bar took the Smith probably 15 to 20 minutes to make from start to finish. And for a manure spreader, that is perfectly fine step support. To be able to duplicate a shape is one thing. To be able to fix the problem during lunch brake is a different thing.

I have seen youtube videos where they 3D print an item then produce a mold from it. They mostly do that with Brass or Aluminum because it requires much less heat that Cast Iron, but that is something that you may want to learn. It could open up a new dimension to the way you do your job.

That is a bear when "castings" are missing vs. wrought iron. There's the 3D idea too, "print out" a duplicate however, it wouldn't be a left hand design. Like you say "For one part?". Since the labor is not really a big factor, I agree this idea is best for the one part needs plus once done, that bracket will be forged strong compared to the other one they fabricated. Lots of work on this and its going to be out in the open to human eyes so, its got to get "pretty close".

I'm gonna call my Field Day a complete fail. It was the first time I set up my portable G90 based rig. The event I was a A2, with one of the radios being a HF station, both provided by the event coordinator. My G90 both isn't able to reject other close signals(I was getting interference from their 20m transmissions on 40m), and I couldn't get FLDigi to decode anything, much less transmit anything. Next year I may attend the event with an Anti-Field day setup, to avoid the contest part of it all. More of a public demonstration of the hobby, rather than just the contesting side of the hobby.

You've made an almost identical copy of the original, but the beauty of the situation is that the step mounts are on opposite sides of the wagon, so they are not viewed at the same time; however; I'm sure you are like me, and your head's telling you they're not absolutely the same. Everyone else looks at them, and says that's perfection! Sometimes you've just got to let it go. Beautiful work, as usual. It's a joy to watch you making stuff [wood or metal]

I once took an art history class and the professor was talking about Michelangelo and how he was such a great sculptor for creating his famous "David'. Being a young smart alec, I said he wasn't all that great of a sculptor because the David was already in the block of marble and all Michelangelo did was chip away the stone that was covering it.
