I just want to note...I did this exact practice on a 2-month silent retreat that I did in 2020, and I not only forgave my father for exiting my life when I was a little boy, but I got to the place where I felt grateful that it happened, because the pain and shame from that experience brought me to be a devout practitioner and follower of Lord Buddha’s teachings in this lifetime. This practice works!

I read this comment a few days ago and this morning i walked to the park, doing forgiveness meditation to myself , did about 30 mins of metta on a bench, and then did forgiveness meditation on the way back towards my father leaving me when i was young and cried my eyes out. I am so thankful to you and to Bhante

Question about loving kindness meditation. (metta) The book says (Bhante Vimalaramsi - Life Is Meditation ) that I need to sincerely experience the love of love and kindness in order to send it to others. With this there is an example only with a puppy. The question is, do I just need to remember all those good and good moments that I had in my life for this? For example, meeting with friends, thinking about momets with my girlfriend, about family, about positive situations with strangers, or something for which I am grateful to other people. Or should I just try to maintain that feeling no matter what by just smiling in my head and chest without memory things?

Dear Bhante I feel responsible that couldn’t help my parents. Dad was an alcoholic, mom has mental illness. Any advice
@davidjohnson82182 жыл бұрын
Bhante would tell you that you are responsible for you first. Your responsibility here is to FORGIVE your parents choices now and let it go. Wanting to go back and beat yourself because you think you could have helped them is just more craving. See them with equanimity. You have to ask do they want your help? If not then you are not going to be able to help anyway. So forgive YOURSELF for not being able to help or solve the problem. All beings fare according to their Karma - Your parents are faring according to their actions. There is nothing to be done to avoid those actions unless you are able to teach them the Dhamma and get them off the wheel of samsara for good- then they will not experience any more unwholesome results of their actions. Please forgive yourself as well as them.

In which Pali text this forgiveness meditation is described?
@DhammasukhaOrg3 жыл бұрын
The Buddha ask monks to do forgiveness during the reciting of the patimokka. Also forgiveness is part of compassion and you have heard him talk about compassion/karuna I would think.

Thank you. I want to know practically when eyes are closed, trying to release distribution but mind is still full of thoughts which practicener wants not to pay attention. So by which method, Release distractions? (I am facing this issue just I took 4 days of rest break from forgiveness meditation due to illness)
@davidjohnson82183 жыл бұрын
The important thing is to go back to your object of meditation and which is "I forgive myself for not understanding" and contemplating that - then the moment a situation pops up while you are gently repeating this forgive it. and just relax. Thoughts are tension and as you relax the mind (and head) the thoughts will subside. But its important that if you become upset about too many thoughts that you forgive that too! Some thoughts are just noise and not taking you away so just ignore them. So stay with yourself and as things come up Forgive and Relax - then go back to your phrase.

What should you do if you struggle to stay in your sitting for 45 minutes? I tend to experience a lot of sloth/restlessness, or I might get caught up in a thought for too long and I end up moving.
@davidjohnson82183 жыл бұрын
You should get up and do walking. Forgiveness can be done walking. Stay with your phrases and forgive as you walk.

I've watched a few of Bhante's instruction videos and read a couple of his books. But I haven't seen what he recommends we do with our eyes. Open? Closed? Half open? Doesn't matter? Theravadins close their eyes, but other schools do not. What did the Buddha say?
@davidjohnson82183 жыл бұрын
Bhante would suggest you close them. But it's up to you. If not closed you become distracted by the outside world.
@truthseeker77593 жыл бұрын
@@davidjohnson8218 Yes, it does not matter whether open or closed as long as one can avoid distractions and bring the mind to attention / focus on meditation

As always, thank you, but how does this apply if the forgiveness is directed towards suffering an unjust policy of a corporation that was carried out on you remotely? So you do not even know who exactly did it?
@DhammasukhaOrg3 жыл бұрын
You forgive that corporation for not understanding. We have to forgive many things that are not fair but they still happen. So forgive everything that disturbs. Eventually the forgiveness practice allows you to be undisturbed by anything.
