The Grass Roots made their mark on the America charts from 1966 to 1975, The band was a brainchild of Lou Adler and the famous songwriting duo of P.F. Sloan and Steve Barrie. The most successful period of the band was actually it’s third incarnation which consisted of Creed Bratton on (vocals and guitar), Yes the same Creed from the Office. there was also Rick Coonce on (drums, percussion), Warren Entner on (vocals, guitar, keyboards), and Kenny Fukomoto on (vocals, bass). Fukomoto was actually drafted in the army and after a few replacements lead singer Rob Grill was in for good. The band had many hits including the unforgettable 60s hidden gems anthem Let’s Live For Today. Which went to #8 in 1967. I was fortunate to talk with Warren Entner about the band and this song. Entner has had a long and successful career in the Industry After leaving The Grass Roots in the mid 70s, Entner went behind the scenes of the music business and became a successful manager. Establishing his own firm Warren Entner Management, he’s managed a number of successful hard rock artists including Quiet Riot, Faith NO More, Deftones Nada Surf and Rage Against the Machine. He also shares the story of the first time he say Rage live. As we go it not the

For me, being born in 1974, and not having a cognizant basis for relating to Vietnam it's For What It's Worth (Stop, Hey What's That Sound). It has always evoked a sentiment in me that said, "Hey! Wake up! Stuff is going down that the government isn't talking about, so pay attention!" Even though I later learned it was written in relation to domestic protests.

Honestly, Jimi Hendrix’s version of The Star-Spangled Banner, from Woodstock. You could hear the war in his playing. Other than that, Barry McGuire’s “Eve of Destruction” & Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son” are also heavy hitters.

Khe Sanh by Cold Chisel (with Jimmy Barnes at vocals). Bit of anthem in Australia, perhaps not well known in North America. The song offers up a surviving soldiers gritty take on his post-Vietnam experience. I was introduced to the song by an Aussie friend of mine and it's a great take, fine song.

For me, it has to be "Ohio" by Neil Young. It came out a year and a half before I was born, but I was born & raised in Ohio, pretty close to where the senseless shooting occurred. In fact, one of my sisters went to Kent State university in the early-mid 90's. The students were protesting the Vietnam war, and it ended in tragedy for four students. 😥

I would pick California Dreaming the beauty of its folkness and melodic sound contrast with the horror of war... or Fortunate One because it draws out the double edge sword of govt...as protector of it's people and, often times become the predator of it's people.

God it's great to see Warren for the first time since he walked away from the Grass Roots in 1974! He looks great, too! He sang co-leads with Rob Grill on a lot more hits than people realize, including "Let's Live For Today", "Wait A Million Years", "The River Is Wide", and actually did most of the lead vocals on their biggest hit, "Midnight Confessions". A talented, energetic performer and an all-around truly nice person, one of the warmest, most caring people I've ever met in the rock 'n' world. Great to see you, Warren! I'd love to hear you talk a lot more about your days with the Grass Roots. Best wishes from a long-time fan.

I can definitely understand why the song live for today resonated with Vietnam Vets. My dad is a Vietnam Veteran and he told me that while you were there you lived for the day because you didn’t know if you would be alive tomorrow. On top of all the other dangers they faced, they had frequent rocket attacks, especially at night. The one thing that has always stuck with me is when he told me that you always knew who was about to go home because they would sleep in the bunker on base at night and not their beds. Because the last thing you wanted to do is make it an entire year there only to be killed days before you were to be sent home. Thank you to all the Veterans out there who risked their lives so that we may enjoy the freedoms we do. 🙏🏻🇺🇸

My dad is Vietnam vet and a huge music fan. I remember cruising around with him as a kid listening to the classic rock station and a song would come on and he could always tell me the first time he remembered hearing it, and it was usually in Vietnam. I'm a veteran too, with 3 tours in Bosnia. It's cool how a song can instantly transport you back to a time and place and you can remember exactly where you were at and what you were doing when you first heard it. Another cool vid Professor!

My dad spent 4 years active duty in Vietnam. At one point, my grandma went to the local music store and bought a couple of albums for my dad while he was overseas. She didnt know what to get him, so she asked the guy behind the counter what a 20 year old Airborne Sgt in Vietnam would like. She ended up buying/sending Led Zeppelin II and Are You Experienced? by Jimi Hendrix. Those were my dad's first Led Zep/Jimi albums, but not his last for sure. He said that he and his fellow soldiers LOVED those albums and took care of them as if they were worth more than gold. He's over 70 now, but if you want to see him look/act 20....throw on Whole Lotta Love.

Must give you props for revisiting acts from 50+ years ago since we now have been conditioned to have such a shortened attention span and seldom is credit or recognition bestowed on such deserving and influential artists.(as evidenced by the appreciation expressed by Warren during your interview). Might I suggest covering other Vietnam era artists like Jefferson Airplane and Marvin Gaye as well as all those wonderful late 60s and early 70s top 40 gems (ie: Midnight Confessions, Tighter Tighter, Bring The Boys Home to name a few) So many of these made the AM radio soundtrack of my childhood. Great interview!! Was this in the last year or so? I put the link on one of my Grass Roots uploads because many fans (including myself) have wondered what Warren has been up to the last few years. Glad to see he's doing well! Thanks so much, have subscribed. ☺

Sgt. Barry Sadler "Ballad Of The Green Berets". Number 1 for 5 weeks in 1966. I was at Fort Benning in 1967 when John Wayne filmed the movie "The Green Berets". The movie, released in 1968, ends with a version of the song playing.

A great song and a surprise hit. Two years after Get Together was released, a religious charity used it for their public service announcements, and it became very popular.

Thanks for sharing this song Let's Live For Today and the info on it's effect on Vietnam soldiers. There's another song that The Association did that struck a nerve with Vietnam soldiers - called "Requiem for the Masses". You might consider interviewing Jules Alexander about that song and how it "accidentally" got played as a B side single on the radio and caught the soldiers' attention.

It's nice to know that the guys who did "Live For Today" were able to make a good living and can retire at some point. Sometimes that philosophy can come back to bite you in the ass.

I saw the Grass Roots in concert in 1986. I don’t remember how many original members were still there, but they put on a great show. Those are, ahem, my midnight confessions...

I instantly thought this video was going to be on Dean Ford and The Marmalade - “Reflections of My Life”. With lyrics such as: “The greetings of people in trouble, reflections of my life, oh how they fill my mind”, “All my sorrow, sad tomorrow, take me back to my own home”. Lyrics as such kind of paint the picture. Historical analysis: 69/‘70 the country was so divided, there had been TET, My Lai, and video footage of other intense battles brought into American living rooms nightly, along with the casualty counts. By this time troops were aware of the anti military sentiment back home and troop morale wasn’t good. The lyric “The world is a bad place, a sad place, a terrible place to live; but I don’t want to die”, I believe summed up the perspective of the US combat soldier. Not taking away from other songs, but I think “Reflections” truly summed up the feeling/vibe of the time.

For What It's Worth will always be a reminder of Vietnam, even though it's not even about Vietnam. My dad would have been the last person drafted (color blind, deaf in one ear, kids, college), but he lost most of his friends there, so he's not big on songs that remind him of that time.
