We are happy to introduce our Forgotten Commanders Series beginning with Maurice De Saxe. While not necessarily forgotten Maurice is not considered a household name even among historians. His battlefield innovations lived on well past his interesting life.
Sources:
"The War of the Austrian Succession" by Reed Browning
"Fontenoy: France Dominating Europe" by Denis Gandilhon
"Reveries on the Art of War" by Maurice de Saxe
"Fontenoy 1745: Cumberland's Bloody Defeat" by Michael McNally
"Fontenoy and Great Britain’s Share in the War of the Austrian Succession, 1741-1748" by Francis Henry Skrine
"Marshal Of France; The Life And Times Of Maurice, Comte De Saxe, 1699-1750" by Jon Manchip White
Forgotten Commanders highlights and tell the stories of figures in history that played a major role in the unfolding story of humanity. Many of the commanders featured in this series are not as well known as they should be and many deserve more attention, and in some cases, re-interpretation of their deeds.

This man beat the British at Fontenoy with the Irish. Inspiration for many generals.

yes, but he famously stated at Fontenoy that he knew his own infantry could not stand against the British troops, so he routed the dutch and Austrians and then failed to crush the British. The battle was a French victory, but if the Austrians and dutch stayed, Cumberland would have been victorious in the battle.

For some reason I'm thinking of Stanley Kubricks " Barry Lyndon" while watching this! A lot of men in his day lived like this. Life was short especially if you were going to war. Well done!

And we cannot forget that it was exactly this behaviour that made the newer middle and lower classes completely despise their nobles and start the French Revolution and the explosion of changes and wars that triggered. By the way, love Barry Lyndon too, a real underrated masterpiece, that shows the brutality of life in the late-feudal Europe, and how easy one could rise and fall.

I used your video on John Churchill to do research for a weekly assignment on The Battle of Blenheim yesterday. You’re the man. Appreciate you. Cheers from The FL/ Ga Line. 🇺🇸

I haven't forgotten him.....one of my favorites. The Courland escapade strikes me as rather comical.....but there's no doubt he was ahead of his time. I've a feeling Napoleon was jealous.

We started this supplemental series to highlight some generals we feel don't get enough credit for what they did. Maurice was right at the top of that list and he's a truly colorful character to boot

De Saxe worth 3,000 men, Napoleon 40,000. Maybe there's some inspiration from that.

I read online that napoleon had positive things to say about him, and also admired frederick the great of course

I never heard of him until 1 or 2 years ago when I read something about napoleon admiring him, and I searched online and came across an episode of jocko willink podcast that talked about him, very cool, until recently I hadn't looked into the period between 30 years war and 7 years war so de saxe was new to me... except for a couple battles against Turks like zenta and Belgrade and the Anglo-Dutch wars I didn't know much about the warfare between 1640s and 1750s so thanks for covering this
