After going over everything from One-Punch Man to Chainsaw Man, it is once again time to do another animation dive into Hunter x Hunter! With big names such Kyoji Asano from Attack on Titan, Studio Madhouses top action animator Hidehiko Sawada and even the series director of Trigun - Satoshi Nishimura. We have some pretty high-profile names so let's see what they had to offer.

What's really amazing is that those sweat drops in the 1999 are actual h2o poured over the camera, because there's hardly anything else you could do with traditional animation to sell the effect. I just find the use of practical effects (water, tinfoil, various masks) to be a treat to see each time as they're not needed anymore in modern animation.

@Francisco Cerpa that isn’t fair at all neither does it make any sense, 1999’s anime was running when chimera ant wasnt a thing at all, and if you disclose chimera ant as the most important arc then that makes every other one pointless. and 99 is superior in many other ways, you’re somewhat contradicting yourself here

@Francisco Cerpa now you’re being subjective yourself when you literally blamed me for doing that, you honestly have no common sense here, not me. from what you told me in those massive paragraphs it seems as if you don’t understand the moral behind hxh at all. 2011 absolutely does not have amazing animation in every single aspect, you clearly missed a lot of the way it adapted the hunter exam arc. Multiple movements were only stills and shakes nothing else besides loads of generically directed episode by a bunch of nobodies. Hxh 1999 has furuhashi kazuhiro. The director for one of the top anime in Japan rn (spy x family) and here you’re saying that 2011 is automatically superior? Some animators that did major fights in other shounen like naruto were worked on in the original series, the animation holds up extremely well. While I won’t discriminate against 2011’s animation it’s definitely amazing in certain fights like this one, but just because it’s newer and sharper doesn’t make it “superior”. Anime can do much better than the manga and most of the time people act like it’s a bad thing as if hxh 1999 went completely off story, when in reality it’s only expanded more. Firstly uvogin literally was apart of the assassination from his families clan. How the hell can you say “why are you affected by defeating uvogin” lol. 1999’s take on that scene was out of kurapika’s trembling fear out of taking the life of somebody for the first ever time in his life, you don’t understand his character one bit from what you’ve said. Pakunoda literally had a chain stabbed into her heart, are you even being serious by now? Because it’s very hard to take you seriously. You just said “there isn’t any by far” but you keep indulging into your opinion of 2011 being superior no matter what. Don’t complain about common sense when you yourself don’t even have the capability of expressing yourself in a well matter because you have no sense in some of the things you’ve mentioned.

Anime form the 80s and 90s are just an absolute pleasure and personally I think they perform fight scenes a lot better than more modern anime. I remember on Newgrounds someone made a video about a particular scene from both the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Stardust Crusaders anime and OVA where it was the Jotaro and DIO fight, specifically the scene about Jotaro hitting one of the lamp posts and how the OVA animation just.. gets it right. My problem with a lot of more modern anime adaptations if how they make scenes a lot more dramatic, drawn out and overly flashy and exaggerating impact. But with much older animation it's helluva lot smoother and paced much better with the combat feeling a lot more gritty.
@crestofhonor2349

Yes I agree. I absolutely prefer the smoother animation of the 80s and 90s. Granted I still love the stuff done today but I've always preferred fluid animation over heavily detailed, lower frame rate animation. One of my biggest examples is God Of High School. I didn't like how choppy the animation was and thought it needed more in betweens
@hawshimagical
@hawshimagical Жыл бұрын
i prefer the classic animation styles too, but the flashy new style can sure get me excited. the thing is that, newer animation studios have access to interpolation softwares now, so drawing a flashy, dynamic key pose and lingering on it by tweening it into an offset version of the same drawing is much more viable now. so theyre able to keep the motions going while having many expressive key poses, instead of constantly stopping the motion. its a modern development
@crestofhonor2349

@@hawshimagical Nah I don't want to see interpolation. The amount of interpolation I've seen in western animation looks awful. Interpolation and 2D animation do not mix well. It works for 3D animation due to it's differences but 2D animation suffers from it and makes it incredibly obvious

I probably won't watch the 1999 version entirely, but man oh man.... from what I've seen, they focus so much on the emotional and "realistic" aspect of HxH and I love it--the more realistic art style really helps sell it too. It's how I feel about FMAB vs FMA, there's just a lot more... naturalistic weight(?) in how the older series tells the story. And on that note, I absolutely couldn't believe how epic the 2011 fight was when I first saw it!! Whenever I need something to hype me up, I watch that fight. So beautifful...

As you brought up name pronunciation at 5:45 here's some info to help with that: japanese phonetics are pretty much 100% consistent and vowels always make the same sound A is always "ah" E is always "eh" I is always "ee" O is always "oh" U is always "oo" It gets a little more complicated with combinations and stress, but that's the general rule. So, Matsushita is pronounced "Mah-tsoo-shee-tah" and Abe is "Ah-beh" rather than how we'd say the same spelling in English. Love your videos, just thought I'd bring that up so you know :)

For example if you look at original DBZ and Super side by side.... Haven't done that in a while but I believe DBZ uses like 5 skin tones to shade their characters. In super it's like 3. I think the biggest takeaway here is how action animation has progressed over the years. Where-as in 99 Matsumoto and co would chose more smooth and fluid art/animation for their scenes, modern animation in 11 and more recent anime focus on the impact and weight of the hits with camera shakes and effects. Even thogh i prefer 99 overall, this is one of the rare examples where i think as a whole, the fight was marginally better in 11. 99 has fantastic flow and the POV shots from Gon are fantastic and the character designs are amazing but it's massively let down by the lackluster battle sound effects which fail to deliver any real weight to Gon or Hisoka's hits. Both versions have their strengths and weaknesses but i think to a moder shonen fan who is used to getting an epilepsy of effects on every hit, 99's combat here will seem weak.

After recently finishing Hunter x Hunter's 99 version run, I must say it's easily my preference. I actually started with the 2011 version, because my partner thought it would be a good idea. My partner watched that all the way through. So, I tried it. I hated it, lol! I love deeply analyzing characters and stories. Unfortunately, the 2011 version, in the beginning, failed miserably in a lot of ways for me. They dumped a lot of important parts for the characters that the 99 version covers. I was only able to get to episode 8 in the 2011 version before I just couldn't stomach it anymore. My partner was naturally disappointed. But, he figured I wouldn't like it, and assumed that Hunter x Hunter wasn't for me. (Going to the 99 version, I had my partner guide me on the differences with the manga and 2011 version, which really helped, sometimes even popping back to the 2011 version to compare) Later, I decided to give the 99 version a try. Boy, was it a significant difference. SOOOO much better. I encouraged my partner to try watching the 99 version. We both ended up binging the 99 version, and my partner ended up loving it more than the 2011 version's first 3 arcs. We have returned to the 2011 version to finish the show, starting with the Greed Island arc. Thankfully, the show, by this time really improved, and gives the feeling of the 99 version more. Although, the show still has some parts in it that really detracts from the whole experience, unlike where the 99 version keeps that consistency pretty well, for the most part. Either way, I can appreciate both versions, but if you want any idea of what to do, watch the first 3 arcs with the 99 version subbed, and then pick up with the 2011 version afterwards. It's honestly the best way to do it.

@@CcRrAaSH It's fine to enjoy because its bones are still HxH. But I've gotta say, the 2011 butchers the groundwork of the first few arcs. It shaped up in due time, but the soundtrack was poorly managed IMO. I found the arc specific tracks to be quite good and even iconic. However, the "general" HxH soundtrack present from ep 1-148 is a mess...

This was an excellent, detailed breakdown of how two different adaptations of the same fight can both be amazing. Thank you! Like you I appreciated Togashi's cameo as guest announcer in the 1999 version. But referring to 2011's take as "random dude in the box" is incorrect. The "dude" is Prince Baka, the main character of Togashi's immediately preceding series, _Level E._ Baka showing up there was completely in character for this guy, who seemed to have unlimited resources to do just about anything he wanted, and he did. To add another tidbit, the voice actor for Prince Baka was the same as 2011's Hisoka.

To me both are equal in the First half but 1999 falls a little short in the second half cause I feel the editing/shot composition couldn't help alleviate pressure from the lack of animation at points compared to before despite some nice moments while I feel the 2011 upped its game just a TEENSY bit edit: I also like the inspirations u pointed out :D

I mean the 1999 show is just basically better in every way apart from being older and having some disadvantages because of that and I am sure the 2011 animation quality is better in some ways... but like damn the story telling is waaaaay better in the 1999 version and I prefer the voice actors from 1999 as well.

12:34 To me, it's completely different. 1999 version ended the EP with the moment when Gon gave the badge back to Hisoka with that music which is telling me that they gave the meaning to Gon being free from his debt under Hisoka. While in 2011 version, they ended the EP with the punch with the outro music like that which is indicated to me that they gave meaning more to the action.

Looking at Hisoka's face from the thumbnail, the '99 version shows how messed his face when Gon landed his punch, the 2011 shows how clean his face is despite Gon has a bigger fist. I like the dark, eerie atmosphere of the '99 version, plenty of blood, and no narrator! 2011 version feels so rushed for me.
@boredomoverload8236
@boredomoverload8236 Жыл бұрын
It’s not rushed,it’s not the exact shot by the way,the 2011 version is was when he gave him the first punch,the 1999 version was the flurry of punches he gave hisoka,so it’s not same punch,the flurry of punches in 2011 looked fine because it was in motion,it doesn’t how messed up hisoka’s face looked because it was in motion that most people don’t pause mid action to look at

Gon's Rush in the 1999 version seems very wrong to me, considering it did no real damage and Hisoka was just letting Gon hit him a bit while reveling in his ecstacy. To him, they were more like erotic slaps than an actual threat. Here Gon grabs him by the hair, Hisoka winces in pain, as if Gon was able to actually damage him. Hisoka was actively enjoying it, trying to hold back. It's clearly a wrong decision, and the video never mentions it.
