Oh I used to be so fat. My ex-boyfriend treated me like that. As did my dad, when I had a breakdown over being fat because it wasn't my diet or my exercise (my parents monitored them). They took me to a doctor, it was hormone imbalances and a blood clotting issue. Within a month of treatment I lost 4 sizes. Now my sister moans at me for being too pale and having saggy breasts, you'll never win against nasty people. They will want to feel important by being nasty to you and make you feel shit.

Annie's relationship to her mom was my favourite thing about the show. I have a great relationship with my mom but she has a real problem with her children being overweight and no matter how many times I say she needs to stop commenting on my weight she still brings it up, and when she doesn't she talks to me about my brothers weight. News flash fat people know we are fat. We also know how to loose the weight in theory but knowing that calories in being lower than calories out will make you loose weight doesn't make it easier to do. Something being simply doesn't make it easy. Someone pointing out that I am fat doesn't help me not be fat.

I’m well over 175 pounds and the morning after pill threw my hormones through a loop 🎢. It depends on the person, regardless of weight. Also, people project their low self-esteem onto fat people. They try to place us under them in the “social hierarchy.” Fat is a physical descriptor and not a part of my personality so they can’t figure out how to classify me. I have the confidence of a much younger and thinner woman. A lot of men are confused as to why they are attracted to me. It bothered me at first until I came out of my own heard and thought about how fat women are generally perceived.

I get the feeling you'd like "My Mad Fat Diary." I haven't seen "Shrill" yet, and my impression is that the tones of these two shows are very different, but they deal with a lot of similar themes
@theglowup96235 жыл бұрын
I found that show so relatable in so many ways! I do think she became very self sabotaging however I do feel like thats sooo representative of teenagers who are overweight. I know I for sure just never had the confidence other bigger girls found. Like I really just couldn't at all see why anyone I like would like me back, in the same way she doesnt accept it. I also really enjoy that she was with a guy who also sort of hated himself for a while because she somehow thought that was the best she could do because of her weight and she felt more comfortable not constantly thinking people were watching them wondering how he could like her. I related to that also I think. I also really liked how her friend was. I had literally the exact same friendship at the time where we'd grown up together but as much as she was my best friend she was also a complete bitch to me over and over and it got to the point where I wondered if we were friends because she could easily take advantage of me. But staying in a friendship like that is also linked to overall low self confidence and thinking youre not worth more than that/ you won't find other people. The scene when she fantasised about unzipping the fat from her body was so emotional also- I always used to think my life would only really begin once I lost the weight. And the way she's initially desexualised by everyone around her, partly because of her weight, and called 'Raymondo' and considered one of the guys and the funny one is so relatable. I think its done very well because it's based on a real persons diary! People rarely talk about bigger people having eating disorders either
@annoyedbyyourface5 жыл бұрын
The tone is extremely different. Shrill is more of a comedy while MMFD is way more dramatic (with a, imo, more interesting cast).
@writerspen0105 жыл бұрын
@@annoyedbyyourface I finished watching Shrill the other day, and I've got to agree. The cast of MMFD is definitely more interesting, and I think MMFD is the better show. Shrill is good, but... in a way, I almost felt like the main issue--fatness, and existing in the world as someone with a larger body--was the backdrop to the plot about Annie and her deadbeat boyfriend, sprinkled with bits where she lays out the thesis for the audience. But I do like that Shrill has scenes are straight up celebrations of women with bigger bodies, like the pool party episode. In MMFD, since Rae was the only one dealing with obesity, her depression really highlighted how alone people--teens especially--may feel when dealing with such a visible personal problem. Both shows are good, but My Mad Fat Diary wins for me. The character arcs more truthful to me, the acting is great for such a young cast, and I appreciate how compassionate the story is.

We came of age in the anxiety-ridden post-9/11 era, during the Wars on Drugs/Afghanistan/Iraq and the Great Recession. Consequently, we tend to distrust big, hierarchical institutions and established ways of doing things. We're also more open about how social issues affect us and our communities, which sets off older generations who think they had it as bad or worse. In many ways, the opposite is true. These are obviously generalizations, but I think that sums up the disconnect between older generations (Boomers and Gen X-ers) and younger ones (Millennials and Gen Z-ers).

I really liked the show for most of the points she made. But there were two I didn't like: 1) The black characters are only the stereotypical funny best friends. That cliche we have seen a hundred times is still in this "progressive" show. 2) They did another cliche of the "black guy is super attracted to the white girl." Of course, the only guy who treats her well is a black dude. 🙄
@mollygrace30685 жыл бұрын
I felt the same way. Yeah, she’s fat, but it’s still a white female main with the gay/black best friend whose only purpose is to support her. Of course, in this case, it’s a mémoire written by a real life white women, so the casting makes sense. Still... I’m also really over seeing black men with white women on TV. And I’m married to a black dude. Just mix it up, people. Not every black man’s deepest desire is too hook up with a quirky white girl.
@AJ-cq5pw5 жыл бұрын
Mmm I don't know, not everything needs to be about race. The story is about her, not necessarily her friends, and the season is quite short and so are the episodes so if the show has a season 2, we may get more into her friends story line and her darting issues. Also the black man thing, I never knew that was a trope or a cliche. The "nice handsome guy who likes the fat girl" is quite common in movies about plus size girls learning to love themselves, like Dumplin for example.

When I was around 14-15 I fell in LOVE with the show Shameless because of how I could relate with the younger kids, having grown up in poverty with my drug/alcohol abusing father. I felt heard. Until about halfway through the show, when the older brother(the name is completely leaving me whoops) goes off to college and goes on a sex bender with "undesirable" women after being rejected. Now it's subtle, but one of those women's "undesirable/disgusting" traits seems to just be that she's slightly fat. Not huge, but the way that the sex scene is shot, her cellulite and jiggling thighs are almost the centre of the frame in a way that subtlety, but clearly, pokes fun at her weight. Sprinkle in the fact that at 15 I was at my highest bmi and that I adored the characters and messages in that show, and I've honestly never felt comfortable with my body since. I can't have sex without immense fear that I'm a fetish or a pity fuck and that's because of the small, subtextual messages in media that shame the idea of fat women(or men) having sex. I haven't seen Shrill and I don't know if I ever will because I don't have a Hulu subscription but it's refreshing to hear of how the sex scenes are just that, nothing more or nothing less.

I would love to see them explore the dynamics of relationships between fat women who have sex with men and men who are genuinely attracted to fat women. There are some of us who approach that attraction as a kink (no shame) and those, like myself, who simply perceive fat women as exceptionally and extremely attractive. In a fatphobic society, there are so many ways in which our relationships face unique pressures, and there are also misconceptions we can have about each other. There are very few representations that depict fat women in relationships with men that aren't either for laughs or predicated on the man being horribly flawed (particularly in relationship to her size).

Growing up heavy and constantly berated for it, makes me appreciate this show so much. It's not trite. The fat girl isn't the best friend that gets thrown a bone character. They don't make a big deal about the guys liking her as she is, liking a heavy girl isn't made into a fetish. The character Ryan just sucks because he sucks, he isn't emotionally abusive to make the audience pity her more. I feel like I've had everything that goes through her head go through mine. We are basically told our whole lives that the only way a person could love us is if they have a fat fetish, we aren't people, we are just excessive flesh. It's nice to have something that actually doesn't make the fat person either jolly or tragic (both in reality being tragic), and that not only fat people are watching it and relating to it in some way. I don't agree with the troll thing, I think it was showing that the guy is ashamed he is attracted to her, and thats why he's so horrible to her, then she rejects him and he's doubled up on his hate. It's essentially the self loathing homosexual story, but exchanged with self loathing chubby chaser.

Wowoowwowoowowwow wait, I did not know that about the morning after pill! That is insane! I am glad I dont mind spoilers, I might watch this. I dont always have the time but this show seems worth a watch. Ps. Being an educator and commentor and a sex worker has made me this body positive and fierce warrior woman . I appreciate the humans before me who showed me how to own my self 100%. Okay back to watching

@Brittany Simon As a person who is dealing with body dysmorphia, even though I am going to psychotherapy right now for that and mild depression and anxiety, would you recommend employing part-time as a sex worker to find the positivity that you've found? I'm genuinely asking because I've seen so much media counteracting the idea that sex workers at being exploited and that it can help with self-esteem. Thanks for your comment!!

I found your channel a couple weeks ago and I am loving it.Thank you for this. Thank you for talking about this. So often people's "wokeness" doesn't include fat people or disabled people. Not saying that race is the same as these things, they are different, but not being fat or being abled is privilege and I love when people acknowledge either one of those things and appreciate it so much.

I loved the show, and... I would like to see a show where the fat girl lead does not hate herself. Where she truly believes she has worth, is loved and does not allow crappy people/romantic partners in her life. In one scene, we see the woman in red walking across the street, but shes treated like a fantasy character, not a real person. Again, still the show is great! Love your analysis work!

I have been loving Shrill, and as an Oregonian it is so cool seeing something other than Portlandia associated with Portland. I loved it for all the same reasons you listed; it feels real. (Spoilers!!) Her relationship with Ryan is really familiar and we have all been there. Her relationship with her parents, and how she’s treated at her job as a lower writer is everything I have experienced too. I may not be plus sized, but I love getting to see this perspective.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that. After having 2 kids and being in an unhappy marriage, I gained a huge amount of weight!! I finally took charge and lost a whole person!! Unreal.....anyway I've kept it off for almost 15 yrs now. I could not believe how different people treated me after the weight loss!! So I've been on both sides. Overweight people, especially women, are treated horribly!! It's like night and day.

This is such a good review! While watching the show, I found myself crying so many times - out of joy and out of a sense of finally being understood; being seen and being celebrated. Before this show came out I read Lindy West's book over and over again. The show manages to show the joy and power inherent in fat women even in a world that treats us like peripheral beings. And what you were saying about the sex scenes is so true! It was even just the little things - like the touching of her waist or the way she was held. I've never seen a body that resembles mine being held with such adoration and care in media before. And that was powerful for me. Aidy Bryant and Lindy West and everyone working on this show are powerful! Thanks again for the review it was so good to listen to! Have a great day :)

i appreciate your reviews. and for me, i don't mind spoilers if it's like, a normal comedy series (the good place is a good example of an exception), so i was glad to hear all of your thoughts and this is encouraging me to watch it. i was definitely interested thanks to a trailer i had caught for the show, but it's always iffy when media decides to handle fatness + fatphobia + body positivity because yeah, there can be a lot of false positivity, it can get really simplistic and on the nose. it's nice to hear that this show is more nuanced than that and more real.

This was such an incredible deep dive. I've been watching your videos for a few months (you're insanely talented!!!) and I was wary to watch this one in particular. I'd already watched the show but it felt like your unpacking it might be too much. Like in a way saying the message out loud would confront too much of what I feared? I'm glad I did because forcing myself to hear it is something that I'm priveleged to have been able to do being only 15. I wish more people my age could as well. I love that you opened up at the end. From someone who has a similar problems, it helped so much to hear. It helped even more when you brought up the stigma of the word fat, as it's something that I wrestled with through the show. You're doing amazing work. I admittedly binge watched your videos when I found your channel. Anyway this is getting unnecessarily long. Essentially what I'm trying to say is thankyou for doing what you do!! 💕
