afro curly girl that’s only true for his black audience. After getting backlash for not casting a more “diverse” cast, he implemented white folks and other poc into his art. But any real legitimate complaints coming from black people and more specifically black women, he still hasn’t listened. That’s one thing I can’t stand about Tyler perry.

Lifetime movies are movies that target women, but are produced and directed by men. The plot of the movies are always built on the man being the entirety of women's existence. That is the exact opposite of what is conveyed when movies are directed toward men. The Bechdel Test proves this. Tyler Perry's movies are indeed Lifetime Movies. I never like the man's work. They are not a thinking woman's movie.

I'm curious if Tyler Perry is revealing more about himself in reusing the Angry Black Woman, and "Black women gotta stick with broke black men" tropes in his films than he lets on. I get the feeling that this is some sort of vengful therapy for himself. Like he was the broke black man with a dream, and all of his exes are the angry black women that were too selfish, and couldn't see his potential, and didn't want to put in the emotional labor of taking care of him, and sacrificing herself to further his dreams, so they left him, and now their memories-- or rather *his* memories of them, are forever depicted in his movies as the angry black women characters that nag everyone else and seem perpetually miserable. Punished by his hand, what he sees as justice, by writing narratives for these women that have failing marriages, lose their husbands either through divorce due to their anger or by the husband's death and only realizing after just how good they had it, or in some extreme cases killed off, as Tyler's way of rubbing in their faces "This could've been you! You could've had all this, but you didn't believe in me!" Meanwhile rewarding the "good" black woman characters with happiness, money, everything they could ever want, because they ignored their judgemental female friends and family members, and stuck with the good black man (who became a wealthy actor/director *cough*). It sort of reminds me of how Adam Sandler always writes himself as the Nice Guy in all of his movies. How even though his characters act like selfish, entitled, assholish manchildren, deep down they're really "Nice Guys" deserving of the hot girlfriend/wife-- oh and also it's really funny when they speak in those annoying voices, because that's how Adam Sandler sees himself, and of course, no one sees themselves as "The Bad Guy". At least that's my theory. I admit that I'm just pulling this out of thin air. But, it's not like it's unheard of.

I really enjoyed Acrimony even though the ending was trash. Once I got past what I perceived were Tyler's biases, the movie was very entertaining. I didn't get the impression that he was telling black women to stay with no good black men, but more of a dig at conservative Christian traditions of "till death do you part" even when it means putting yourself in harm's way. And, foolishly (and blindly) putting your faith in a man. I could go on about what I took from the movie but I won't. I liked it.

Lol.I get your point. I just think that sometimes we have to get past the original premise of the commentator's video and dig a little deeper. In this movie I didn't think that Taraji's character was portrayed as the bad guy. I think once you looked past her stereotypical black womaness (what Tyler is known for) her character was tragic because she put too much faith in a man who was self-centered and self-serving. In my eyes he took her whole life from her, and unfortunately she was not emotionally nor experientially mature enough to make sound decisions for herself. Which is why her two older sisters, in my opinion, we're outward projections of her thought process. Her older sister was her wiser and more critical conscience and her younger sister was her softer tolerant self. Robert was a lot faster on the hustle side than she was. He was a threat from the beginning that she wasn't able to recognize. She did live a sheltered life prior to college. It's sad that when she finally got an understanding, she admittedly could not get past her rage. She suffered from mental illness and he was a strong trigger to it. I think often times people think that women and men are the same and forget that we as women are designed to be more emotionally invested. This is not a handicap but if we overlook this and go too far in, then when we want to be more practical about a situation our emotional wisdom doesn't necessarily allow us to turn back easily. Taraji's character again was maligned, misused, disrespected, gaslit, and made to feel insecure after years of very subtle but chronic emotional abuse from this man. He was a narcissist with a mild passive demeanor . That's the only reason in my opinion that she looked like a villain. People need to get past these nice drmeanors and look at the person's actions and character . So when I say I enjoyed the movie, I enjoyed Tyler showing how this is a very common thing in many of our relationships that goes undetected and is not often portrayed on screen. Still the ending was unfortunate. Everybody doesn't end up going off the deep end either figuratively or literally as a movie ending portrayed.

This film was a fail. As a psychotherapist, I was really disappointed by the suggestion of Borderline Personality Disorder, especially because it was never completely developed. Tyler Perry has a habit of giving you crumbs, when he could provide something more substantial if he only took the time and better honed his craft. He never fully fleshes out anything, which is unfortunate because he has too many years and projects under his belt to be giving his audience mediocrity.

@ I totally agree. It's as if he highlights the tragedy of our experience with no path to healing the pain. As you said, he cannot confront the reality of the scenarios he plays out which imo really lessens his credibility as a genius writer. A genius writer can connect cause and affect, flesh out the emotions of the characters and go deep dark and ugly to touch the audience and challenge your thinking. TP is good at making others laugh at his characteizations (usually the women) but his perspective as a female is grossly limited. I remember watching Black Girls who consider suicide and cringing at Whoopis role, and Janet Jackson's role when she found out she'd contracted AIDS. Don't even get me started on the mother who lost her kids as the father threw them out of the window. He fails miserably to show our resilience and the depth of our emotional and spiritual humanity bc he refused to collaborate. He's definitely got a god complex! I am enjoying Ryan Coogler, Will Packer Lena Waithe's The Chi, and Ava Duvetnays Queen Sugar. There's so many Mara Brock and Salim Akil, and Yvette Bowser's out here .... I don't understand why there aren't a plethora of fantastic sitcoms, drama's and movies out here. I guess we can't work together and I second your point....they see us make advanced in something and White folks already waiting to rush in and build wealth beyond what we're doing. They've done that since arriving here and observing and then stealing this land. I'll be so happy when we learn to unite, stay on code and really rise in our power. We can't do that until we learn we can't do it alone. TP is the perfect example of that. Spread the wealth and opportunity bruh! Peace and blessings ❣️

Should’ve just stayed down! And that’s the problem! Why sooo many black women stay in bs ass situations!!! You don’t wanna see all yo pay off goin to another woman!!! And that shit does drive you fuckin crazy!!! Been there!!! Now I don’t wait around no try and hold bruthas down! O fuckin well!!!! ✌🏾But they don’t show how these men drive women to these point... you cannot play with ppl in these ways.... then of course he’s the good guy cuz he did get the house back and gave her all that money... but no he couldn’t make him still fight to get his damn wife back! Oh he came up and she finally said fuck it.... so move on to the one who “held it down” wen you “gave up”... give me a damn break!

Saying" i have more questions then flowers in my bouquet" clearly not sure on if she was making the right choice. For me the movie also put out the message of knowing your self worth. I believed she still loved him but was convinced he wasnt gonna make it and that she should just move on. At the point he had moved on too...like i stated. She devoted 20 years to this man even after all the lies and setbacks..most men would be out the door a looong time if it was the other way around. She slept with him one time and found out he lied to her and was cheating on Mel. So, she doesn't know him. Not to mention she brings it up and still looks hurt but she helps him. I also want to point out that at the rate he was buying a boat, rebuying the house (that somehow the people wanted to sell), buying that penthouse (that was somehow available), and giving Mel $10,000,000.00 he should have been broke. I mean didn't he just get the check and it hadn't even cleared.

it's fascinating how despite his lengthy filmography, tyler perry has not grown as a filmmaker or improved at all and i don't think he's interested in it, either. i understand people give him a pass because he hires predominately black casts and tells stories centered on black people (women, the most iconic of which is played by himself, which is.. anyways) but good lord. his films are just bad. but their biggest crime is being lazy and uninspired.

He's just interested in pushing out products so he can be a black filmmaker, but I never hear of him saying that he has received mentoring from a fellow filmmaker or him watching director's commentaries of other films. I don't hear of him taking a class, even if online, to hone his skills. Nor do I hear of him reading other scripts for personal growth reasons. He has ideas and really feels like he doesn't need help. But we all need growth, even when we are very good at something, at least that's what we think of ourselves.

To my understanding he's written the plays when he used to tour as Madea and the others he's staged? If so, perhaps in the same vein he's simply interested in cranking out scripts but not necessarily investing in the film aspect of his storylines. Hiring the best would mean paying accordingly for such talent and maybe in not doing so he can keep more people employed in his studios. If this theory holds true in any way the maybe this is deliberate. A big budget film would drain funds he might like placed elsewhere like pockets.

The character Robert is probably supposed to be a stand in for Tyler Perry himself. It's reasonable to assume that many people told Perry that he wouldn't make it and that many woman passed on him, because they weren't about to be sitting around supporting some fool chasing a dream. As a result Perry probably still feels a bit salty about it despite his subsequent success. That's the most likely reason Perry would try to depict Robert as a sympathetic figure instead of the leech that he was.

Some black women do want to date Jay-Z and nothing less, some aren't so picky. And you know finance can be a huge drain on the relationship. I don't think it's a bad thing to have someone who's financially stable as a standard. The movie should have been about long bob sister saving Melinda from this toxic relationship. While I give Tyler Perry credit for employing black actors/creators and exposing them to more mainstream audiences (and making guilty pleasure movie "Why Did I Get Married?"), he's vastly outshined by much more talented and interesting black directors these days. I stopped watching his plays and movies years ago when I realized he wasn’t making his movies better. They were getting worse, and he was just turning a quick buck.
