There's a contradiction inherent in how Israel reckons with its atrocities against Palestinians. On one hand Israel's leaders and their supporters call for the genocide of Palestinians, such as this past weekend when Israel's Defense Minister announced a blockade of Gaza, referring to its residents as "human animals." On the other hand, the grisly truth of Israeli war crimes must stay out of sight, out of mind. Breaking the Silence, an organization of Israeli veterans, attempts to shatter the silence surrounding war crimes against Palestinians with soldier testimony. Nir Avishai Cohen of Breaking the Silence joins The Marc Steiner Show to talk about the work of his organization, the failure of the Israeli left, and his new book, Love Israel, Support Palestine: An Israeli Story.
Editor's Note: This interview was recorded in September, 2023, before “The Flood of Al-Aqsa" operation by Palestinian armed resistance forces took place on Oct. 7.

The nub of the problem is that cowardice and subservience to sociopathic authority (both sides of the same coin) are now THE NORM, so that anyone who is simply a NORMAL human free of psychopathology is hailed as A HERO. Thus the hero can remain the rare figure, rather than be seen as what normality should be like, what everyone should be inspired to be like in the course of their lives. PATHOLOGICAL CONFORMITY is the DISEASE we need to recognise and cure ourselves of.

Years ago, in the mid=8o's - i was in Israel for the first of several trips as a graduate student during the time that the peace movement was alive and well. I heard an Israeli soldier also was aware of where Israel was headed. He refused to be part of the invasion of Lebanon and was not only dismissed from the army but denied his pension. He had just come back from the US where he was on a lecture tour trying to tell of his situation to anyone who would listen. He said that he was absolutely stunned at how he was vilified by his listeners as a traitor when NONE of them had ever been in Israel . What I cannot figure out, is why support for Israel even amongst non-Jews and people who have never traveled there is so intense that there can be no discussion.

Many people watching these events don't take the time to properly understand the conflict and its Historical roots. This is Israeli leadership's dark secrets. All powerful governments do this. This is an important distinction. Some just hide it better than others. They justify it by fear. Create a culture of fear so one can justify unjust behaviors and hide it at all costs. At the end of the day the little people always lose and the rich profit off war. This will be no different in this conflict. I am hearing phrases like "colateral damage" and "genocide" coming from them and these are the signs of a really nasty and hateful bloody war. Nobody condones the barbarism and savagery committed by terrorists but the karmic vengence I see coming from both sides is ugly. War is like this. If you need news agencies to justify the upcoming butchery then you should probably take another look at what you are doing and make sure you can live with it all as people of God. People will judge your actions with ruthless scrutiny so tread carefully. The problem is he needs to take out the partisanship of his message. I mean look you have 2 parties, 2 religions, 2 cultures, 2 ethnicities and races. This will always divide the majority because humans are predisposed to tribalism and governments weaponize that for power, money and control. When the majority begin to realize this is the root of all problems and stop living in fear and making excuses for that paycheck or lifestyle than this will change and it will be a new type of conflict that will make REAL change.

Thank you for bringing this guest on to your podcast. It is important that people inside and outside Israel , hear the important message he has to deliver. I was surprised and delighted to hear his message from the heart! Never would have expected such a perspective from an Israeli who served in the IDF, but what he had to say really restored my faith in humanity, in a very profound way! To know that there is a group of former Israeli soldiers who were on the ground in the West Bank and Gaza, actively supporting an end to the illegal and unjust occupation of the Palestinians, inspired hope in us all!!! The fact that he and other members of this courageous group of soldiers is speaking out about this, and trying to connect with the younger generation, is all the more remarkable! This will be a major step in opening the lines of communication between young and old alike, and beginning a dialogue and opening up honest debate, so that positive changes can be implemented. Your guest , as well as the other members of his group, all sound like extraordinary human beings, whose efforts will definitely make a positive difference for Palestinians and the Israeli population as a whole. There needs to be a new path forged, so that the never ending back and forth cycles of violence that have been perpetuated since before 1948 and the establishment of the state of Israel, can once and for all come to an end. That would seem to be the only viable path forward, for both Israel and its Jewish and Palestinian populations! Thank you for bringing this wonderful individual on to your podcast. Israel is breathing its last Under this title, the Hebrew newspaper “Haaretz” published an article by the famous Zionist writer (Ari Shavit) in which he says: It seems that we are facing the most difficult people in history, and there is no solution for them but to recognize their rights and end the occupation. Shabit began his article by saying: It seems that we have passed the point of no return, and it may no longer be possible for “Israel” to end the occupation, stop settlement, and achieve peace. It seems that it is no longer possible to reform Zionism, save democracy, and divide the people in this country. He added, if the situation is like this, then there is no taste for living in this country, and there is no taste for writing in “Haaretz,” and there is no taste for reading “Haaretz.” We must do what Rogel Alfer suggested two years ago, which is to leave the country. If "Israeliness" and Jewishness are not a vital factor in identity, and if every "Israeli" citizen has a foreign passport, not only in the technical sense, but also in the psychological sense, then the matter is over. You must say goodbye to friends and move to San Francisco, Berlin or Paris. From there, from the lands of the new German extreme nationalism, or the lands of the new American extreme nationalism, one must look calmly and watch the "State of Israel" take its last breath. We must take three steps back and watch the Jewish democratic state sink. The issue may not have been resolved yet. We may not have passed the point of no return yet. It may still be possible to end the occupation, stop settlement, reform Zionism, save democracy, and divide the country. The writer continued, “I put my finger in the eyes of Netanyahu, Lieberman, and the neo-Nazis, to wake them up from their Zionist delirium, that Trump, Kushner, Biden, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton are not the ones who will end the occupation.” It is not the United Nations and the European Union that will stop settlements. The only force in the world capable of saving Israel from itself is the Israelis themselves, by creating a new political language that recognizes reality and that the Palestinians are rooted in this land. I urge you to look for the third way in order to survive here and not die. The writer in Haaretz newspaper confirms: Since they came to Palestine, the “Israelis” have realized that they are the result of a lie created by the Zionist movement, during which it used all deception on the Jewish character throughout history. By exploiting and exaggerating what Hitler called the Holocaust, the movement was able to convince the world that Palestine is the “Promised Land” and that the alleged temple is located under the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Thus, the wolf was transformed into a lamb that was suckled by the money of American and European taxpayers, until it became A nuclear monster. The writer sought help from Western and Jewish archaeologists, the most famous of whom is “Israel Flintstein” from Tel Aviv University, who confirmed that “the Temple is also a lie and a fairy tale that does not exist, and all excavations have proven that it completely disappeared thousands of years ago, and this was stated explicitly in a large number of Jewish references.” Many Western archaeologists have confirmed this... The last of them was in 1968 AD, the British archaeologist Dr. Caitlin Kabinos, when she was director of excavations at the British School of Archeology in Jerusalem. She carried out excavations in Jerusalem, and was expelled from Palestine because of her exposure of “Israeli” myths about the presence of traces of Solomon’s Temple under Al-Aqsa Mosque. .. Where I decided that there were no traces of the Temple of Solomon at all, and I discovered that what the Israelis call “Solomon’s Stables Building” has nothing to do with Solomon or stables in the first place. Rather, it is an architectural model of a palace commonly built in several areas of Palestine. This is despite the fact that “Kathleen Kenyon” came from the Palestine Exploration Fund Society, for the purpose of clarifying what was mentioned in the biblical narratives, because it She showed great activity in Britain in the mid-19th century around the history of the Near East. He stressed that the curse of lying is what haunts the "Israelis", day after day, slapping them in the face in the form of a knife in the hands of Maqdisi, Khalili and Nabulsi, or with a stone or a stone or a bus driver from Jaffa, Haifa and Acre. The "Israelis" realize that they have no future in Palestine, as it is not a land without people as they lied to. Here is another writer who acknowledges, not only the existence of the Palestinian people, but rather their superiority over the “Israelis” - Gideon Levy, the leftist Zionist, when he says: It seems that the Palestinians have a different nature from the rest of humanity. We occupied their land, and we called their youth prostitutes, prostitutes, and drug addicts. We said that a few years would pass, and they would forget their homeland and their land, and then their young generation exploded the 1987 Intifada. We put them in prisons and said, “We will raise them in prisons.” Years later, after we thought they had learned their lesson, they returned to us with an armed uprising in the year 2000, devouring the land. We said we would demolish their homes and besiege them for many years, and then they extracted impossible missiles to hit us with, despite the siege and destruction. So we began planning for them with walls and barbed wire. . And then they came to us from underground and through tunnels, until they killed us in the last war. We fought them with our minds, and then they seized the "Israeli" satellite (Amos)? They bring terror into every home in “Israel” by broadcasting threats and threats, as happened when their youth were able to seize control of the “Israeli” Channel 2. In summary, it seems that we are facing the most difficult people in history, and there is no solution for them but to recognize their rights and end the occupation. Great conversation. Mistitled, though. Nir didn't specify IDF war crimes. The term "occupation" is a bit abstract for Americans who have not seen for themselves what crimes occur under the occupation. Presumably he detailed IDF war crimes in his book, but it would have been helpful and useful to have asked for specifics.

Nir Avishai Cohen articulates so clearly what I have long thought about the Israel-Palestine conflict, which is that Israelis and Palestinians need to live in peace. There is no other way to half the cycle of disaster which hatred feeds. The political Right see everything in terms of power and domination and submission, but theirs is the path to extinction for all of us.

The only way to stop such horror, is by STOPPING all revenge, no matter how horrible the attack has been. may be by first freeing all the Palestine prisoners' (possibly with a time-limit for a positive response),, may be the Hamas will return all their israeli prisoners'. That might be a first step

Israel in 1948 when the U.N. created Israel, offered all "Palestinians" who would recognize Israel as a State, to stay in Israel, keep their homes, have seats in the Knesset, to be a part of Israel. Those historical Philistine Muslims choose to go to Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Jordan to wage war on Israel in 1948 to exterminate the Jews and drive them into the Mediterranean.

Good point on the influx of Orthodox Jews. I've met some in the UK (landlords). I am NEVER renting a place from people like them, or working for people like them. Definitely not nice people like in Louis de Funes' Rabbi Jacob movie. I applaud this young chap for thinking independently, I can't help noticing that his English is accented, I am used to dealing with Jews whose English is perfect (except when they are French). I wonder how highly (or lowly) educated Israeli soldiers are. I couldn't help noticing that some of them were given junk food (burgers and soft drinks) prior to going to battle. Definitely not an Ironman's diet! Kudos to this young man and I will add his book to the list of books I want to buy, when I get the dough.

The inherent contradiction of saying you want a nation of freedom with equality for all of it's people, but with a unique national identity based on being members of any religion is unavoidable and an irredeemably bad idea that can't possibly ever be a sustainable and just society, because obviously it means you're discriminating against all members who fall out of that group in some way, like for example, someone who loses their ability to lie to themselves in order to believe the absurd things every religion requires its victims to believe in order to demonstrate that their brains have been properly broken as every religion must do to gain a faithful follower or others who were simply never a part of it. By definition a state based on a religious identity such that one calls it "the Jewish state" or the whatever state, substituting any religion; doesn't matter which one, cannot possibly be a free and open society with equality and justice for everyone regardless what kind of relationship they have with imaginary beings in the sky.

Ask yourself the following question: When someone takes your house and kills your family and leaves u to live for many years in the toilet and bathroom and expects you to be thankful and silent, while he controls your access to water, food and electricity and whenever he decides he hits you and kill some of your family members every day What would you do to them? And what is the best solution in your opinion?

There are many Israelis who help the Palestinians some at great cost to themselves because they stand for what is right, most of us find it very hard to blame Israelif nothing else they have been suffering lots of discrimination n hardship for 2000 years, If I was an Israeli I would rather die than lose my country this I very well understand n respect But same time Israelis must understand the oppression of the Palestinians has to stop must stop you cannot right the wrongs of history oppressing and killing Palestinians cannot right the wrongs Jewish people have suffered in the past it cannot take the pains Jewish people have suffered in the past

Bright young progressives have been leaving Israel because they can. This is a classic 'brain drain', which happens under brutal oppressive regimes. I have seen articles about the problem. If things improve I am sure they would be eager to return. I think the best way to understand how brutes can take over and dominate a country over time is best explained by cultural evolutionist Prof David Sloan Wilson with his quote: "Selfishness beats aulturism within groups. Altruistic groups beat selfish groups. Everything else is commintary". Human brutality and violence is best explained by the late social psychologist Ernest Becker in his books 'Denial of Death' and 'Escape from Evil'. Carl Jung, the famous psychologist once said, 'Understanding evil doesn't cure evil. But, it helps, in that a comprehensible darkness is easier to cope with". Evil derives from fear. Israeli Zionists have become the evil that they fear. In the same way that some serial killers were often brutalized by their parents or someone in their childhood. Clearly, this doesn't happen to everyone, but traumatised people or those who are fear driven by nature are more likely to become violent fundamentalists.
