Exactly, the rule changes in the NBA and NFL in the past 15 years changed their respective games. Both leagues essentially legislated defenses from doing anything and that’s why it’s so easy to pass in the NFL and take it to the rim in the NBA. Analytics also changed all sports as the NBA (whether we agree or disagree) believes that taking more 3 pointers is a better strategy.

The Euros came in and saved the game in my opinion. They are not all great defenders, like Jokic and Doncic, but they play the game at the highest level with a level of integrity that surpasses American players by this point. Giannis, Luka, Jokic, none of these guys came up through AAU, or high school basketball in America. Their competitive grit just seems a lot stronger than most American players. I think the NBA was at an inflection point during Golden State’s dynasty, players were at the height of not giving a shit. Giannis, Luka, and Jokic have really brought back that feeling that superstars actually do care. American players of the past generations like Harden, Durant, even LeBron to an extent, have team hopped and made things more about themselves than the team. Especially with rules, we saw the refs actively change the game for guys like Harden to be able to dominate by bating fouls. It was actually pretty shameful to watch. Now I think we’re starting to find more balance in the league, really thank God the big man is back. Also, what I think is most important is these guys know how to play off of their teammates. A lot of American stars like Jayson Tatum, Devin Booker, they don’t know how to play off all or manipulate a defense whatsoever beyond scoring. These foreign players come over and know how to actually play the game. That’s why you see so many American kids flame out in the NBA despite having crazy talent, they have no fundamentals.

The rules were changed because the most hyped US player only averaged 20.9 points per game on 41% from the field and 29% from 3 in his rookie season and missed the playoffs his first 2 years. Bigs still controlling the paint and hand checking exposed LeBron and the league changed the rules to help him. For 15 seasons his defense was not good enough to qualify for an All-NBA defense selection. European player used to have it hard in NBA, not because they were "soft", but because they were used to whole team working in scope of one gameplan and for you and you work for them. Then they got thrown into a game where they were alone, with 9 strangers who play for their own statistic (amd five of them are trying to take a ball away from you), trying to be a good teamate while everybody expects you to take a ball and rush to the hoop in 8th second of offense (in Europe offense will only position itself by that time) and run and gun. Also that’s why when it comes to the convo of who’s the next “face of the league” all you hear is, Ant man, Tatum… as if Joker is on his last leg and about to retire or something or wemby isn’t coming up next ? Which is also why you don’t hear a lot of things about wemby on shows like “First take” but when Ant man dunks on someone… it’s all over that show …. The narrative is an American born player must be the face of the league… but when you have players who (not all) but for the most part just care about money and drama …. That’s what happens. They softened the league for the HS and one and done guys coming in the league in the early 2000s could compete with the veterans. The league has had a ratings problem since MJ retired and all the changes were for ratings. There was no reason for fans of lottery bottom feeder teams to get excited about the prospect of seeing 19 year olds getting bullied and embarrassed every night, so guess what? Just like Steve Nash, a lot of them GREATLY benefited from the less physical style of play. Guys like Dirk, Petrović, Sabonis, Schrempf, etc, they didn't excel when the league got soft. They had fundamentals. Guess who doesn't? One and dones. AAU products. It's not hard to see if you're willing to look. Gilbert doesn't reason well but people listen, so why would he shut up?

@golden10ful No, you're allowed to do crossovers (which would've been carries) or any move where your hand isn't on top of the ball, and you're allowed to take 2 steps in the process of coming to a stop, passing or shooting. Yes, traveling/carries/double dribbles are still in the rulebook, but so are new rules that allow you more freedom in ball control/movement

Defense is done, because the NBA changed the rules and doesn’t enforce rules that weren’t changed. The fake, “today’s players are more skilled” is complete BS. These players aren’t more skilled, they’re less officiated. Watch ANY game NBA or college. Every single player carries the ball every time they dribble. Nearly every screen this an illegal/moving screen. Offensive players are allowed to bull rush into defenders and the defender is called for the foul. They all travel, use the off hand to shield off the defender, and wrap their off hand around the defender to get by them. Defense was taken out of the game intentionally to get more high scoring games because the league decided offense is more exciting than defense.

Seems more like American culture ruined the league. Basketball is a sport with inherently arbitrary rules. Seems like Europeans are currently pretty good at contributing to their teams meeting the winning conditions according to those rules. But doing that happens under conditions that favor traits that he personally doesn't value (using fundamentals and brain over athleticism). But since in the US sports is a business and rules get changed to meet entertainment criteria, he demands that the rules be changed and since intelligence is more adaptable than brawns, he's at least honest enough to demand the exclusion of Europeans than to invent some rules change and hope they won't adapt.
