erm, this doesn't explain anything about how they work. It just goes over what the dampers are, that they can be adjusted or set up differently and where they go in the car. But no explanation of how 'side' dampers work.
@candykanefpv6 жыл бұрын
andy it's a mass that vibrates to create a negative feedback loop for vibrations. Look at how they're used in skyscrapers and you'll understand the basics of it.

The f1 suspensions are insane. Not only does it need to work at low speeds, but also at high speeds where the downforce pushes it down and the car doesnt lose rideheight. For example in eau rouge, where 3,500 kg push the car down. Also under braking the car cant lean forward. But it also needs to be compliant over kerbs, and it has to work in corners aswell. F1 is the pinnacle of motorsports

When people talk about high speed vs low speed damping, they are not talking about the speed of the car. They mean the rate of acceleration in the suspension. Slamming into a curb in a low speed corner is a high speed acceleration for the damper. The roll the car experiences entering a high speed corner is a low speed acceleration for the damper. To put it more simply: high speed damping is for bumps, low speed damping is for roll, pitch, heave and warp. Dealing with downforce at varying vehicle speeds is not really the job of the dampers. That's handled more by the springs and suspension geometry.

It would make sense they get there dampers from oval track racing companies like Penske. Knowing how important and finely tuned there suspensions must be in comparison. Just let them do all the hard work and buy it from them. If you look in any NASCAR teams garage they got walls full of shocks. They are one of the few things they really can play around with on the cars and during the race.

Dampers are one of the few areas that is not tightly controlled by the regulations in both NASCAR and Indy. Penske saw this as an opportunity to get an advantage by making his own dampers. The end result is that Penske are some of the best you can get for any racing series in the world. They are not alone of course. Many F1 teams, even if they make a lot of the parts themselves, partner with the likes of Ohlins.

Generally, the higher the Downforce on the balance of the car, the more load the dampers are set to handle and be able to rebound, keeping the car stable over bumps, and not having the wheels lose contact patch. (Rebound always has more energy than the actual damping) Something easy to picture is to imagine a spring attached to the wheel and it is too floppy to keep what is on top of the wheel from moving everywhere, so you stiffen the spring and add something that will absoarb all the newton meters of force of what is making everything move when cornering or over bumps. F1 cars use more dampers than a regular car to stop the floor from moving vertically and scraping along the ground due to the load of air pushing down. It is a fine blance, that teams like Williams may just get wrong one year, and be completely useless, because there is something un-harmonious with the load of N/m going through the front vs the rear. Whether it be the loss of weight of the air mid corner, or in the suspension.
