Jenny's problem is how she was used and abused, 1st by her father, then by every man she met except Forrest. She felt like she was worth nothing and was never going to be worth anything and would just bring Forrest down with her , she had no idea how to love anyone. It wasn't until she had little Forrest and was give one pure good thing in her life she was able to find her self worth to a point and then accepted that she loved Forrest and always had and it was OK to love someone and not expect them to hurt her. It is very complicated and you get snippets of it in every scene she is in. The first thing you see is all she knows how to do is run from anything as she keeps telling Forrest to do , she doesn't know any other way to deal with the pain and bad and it takes her so long to finally figure it out ( unfortunately this is true for too many and some never get to figure anything out) , Jenny deserves pity not hate , she didn't know how to love until it was too late but she gave Forrest 2 gifts before she left, true love and what it feels like , and someone to love and give his life meaning in Forrest Jr. . Forrest might not be a genius but I would lay any bet he is an incredibly loving and good father.

quite exactly! i am confused if the little forrest was his kid, but to be honest i dont really care.. i know Forrest will take care of him as his own. Jenny was the only friend Forrest had.. he couldn't give up on her no matter what.. due to his lack sense of judgemental mindset.. he gave her the most innocent and pure love she could have.. she didn't think she deserved it.. her life was too messed up.. in the end she did the right thing

All the whole movie is turned on it's head by that line "Is he smart or is he like me." Throughout the movie we're lead to believe that Forrest *doesn't* know he's not as smart as other people...that in his "dumbness" there is a childlike innocence and that's why everything just flows off his back, and it's only right *then* do we realize that he's known *the entire time* and *still* lead his life with kindness and compassion in the face of horrible abuse from so many people.

ofcourse... is easy to judge. in fact i believe that Jenny loved him more than he died by protecting him from her... you may wonder (well why she acted like an a**hole) couple of times towards him... that's a protective mechanism from people with deep trauma.. they want to test u how much u are able to use or hate them... bcuz they dont believe they can be loved. when they cannot make u hate or use them.. they get afraid bcuz they are not used to be around goodness or nice people like that.. so they ran away cuz they feel unworthy...

Most people get pissed at Jenny for leaving him over and over, but you two were right on the money. She knew he loved her, and she really did love him back. But she was such a hot mess, from sexual abuse by her father, abusive boyfriends, a destructive lifestyle with abusive relationships followed by constant drug use. She knew she needed to get her shit together and get her life back in order. And back in those days, there was a huge stigma about seeking therapy or counseling, where the main helpful advice came in the form of “get over it”. One thing that always puzzles me is people's hatred towards Jenny. Will never understand it. She was abused physically and sexually by her dad and also saw him do it to her sisters. Something that traumatic at an early age can really mess you up in later life as was evident in her choice of men but at the end of the day she defended Forrest all through their formative years but because she didn't fall in love with him and marry him immediately she gets known as a villain by some people who watch this movie
@cinemappendix13892 жыл бұрын
I think it has a lot to do with that scene where she shows Forrest her breasts. She doesn't seem to treat Forrest as a serious love interest, as these reactors pointed out, and in that particular scene led him on. Additionally, and this is probably unfair, I think people don't care for her reaction/lifestyle of running away from her troubles and her encouragement of Forrest to do the same. It's one way of dealing with her trauma, whereas Forrest always confronted his traumas--although often internally. The closest we get to a scene with Jenny showing some contemplation of her life's choices are when she stands on the edge of that hotel balcony and an on-the-nose remark from a taxi driver as she runs from Forrest after (unknowingly) getting impregnated by him.
@A-small-amount-of-peas2 жыл бұрын
@@cinemappendix1389 I can't argue the logic I just think those traits are understandable and don't outweigh the unseen good she'd done for Forrest considering Forrest describes her as his ONLY friend. Once she knows Forrest has it more together than she does in terms of stability (mama to college to the military) in his life and meeting a new best friend in Bubba she stays away from him as her previous trauma and the start of the hippy movement and music scene and wanting to go in that direction to escape her upbringing means she has to get away from Forrest as she knows she's no good for him. She's not a bad person, simply flawed, she dies knowing she gave Forrest the one thing in his life he didn't know he was missing
@larrote64672 жыл бұрын
@@A-small-amount-of-peas there's also this: where do you draw the line? I wouldn't dare say where, but the point being that at one point every single human being becomes repsonsible for their actions. @@A-small-amount-of-peas Forrest himself brings that point home while (in maybe the best scene in the movie) he describes how Jenny was with him in all of those times and in all the places he visited. Almost 30 years ago, this movie was mostly about the USA - with Gump as the naive stand-in for America itself - from the early 50s to the early 80s: Elvis to AIDS (well, more or less). It was a biography of the Baby Boomer generation. Today, to appreciate the film on that level, I think you have to be 1) American, 2) Over 50 (like me), or 3) an American history buff. The 1950s are closing in on a century ago now, though it heartens me that people still know who Elvis is. :) There are a million little explainers of who was what and what it meant in this movie, but I think people today just enjoy the human story. As for your reaction, I join others here in thanking you for not running down a victim of incest. Tom Hanks' face when that guy slapped Jenny at the Black Panther meeting was AMAZING... i FELT angry as well

Jenny had AIDS. She was one of the first people to get it that's why she said doctors don't know what it is. Its the same bus driver, she's chewing gum now, she stopped smoking, either because of that years and era new law or she jyst wanted to quit.

Probably the best example of getting friend-zoned in the history of film. She rides the carousel with every Chad she can get her hands on, then gives Forest pity seggs and leaves him an aids baby.

I'm not sure if this was already posted but I have learned a lot from the comments sections from various "First Time Watching" vids. So if I can help someone else learn... I read that Tom Hanks liked the young actor that played the Forrest Gump kid that he took on his talking style for the character. 😁

Same bus driver lady & name. She just quit smoking. After all the times watching this I never realized it was the same woman. This was the time period when I was the same age as adult Jenny. The virus Jenny had was probably hepatitis or HIV, which came out more in the 60's & 70's due to heavy drug use & unprotected sex. HIV which lead to AIDS was not identified yet and Jenny had said she was dying from some kind of virus that the doctors didn't know what it was. This was such a great story of pure love by Forrest for Jenny, who forever found herself with the bad boys, probably due to low self esteem, thanks to the abuse of her father. I just finished watching your reaction to The Green Mile. I really enjoy your reactions. New subscriber now!

yessss.. so sad her life was :( i am not proud to admit i known so many like her.... but somehow if you trust in God strong enough.. he can restore you. Forrest bcuz of his brain to not be able to see everything... ''lack of sarcasm'' made him see only good in people

the part that chokes me up is when Lt. Dan comes to the wedding. He too, has got his life together, and I am so happy for him. (Vietnam Vet) Part of his healing was falling in love with someone that reminds him of the people he was fighting and killing before. His soul is now also healing.

Wonderful movie, and especially fun for me since all the references were familiar to me. Tom Hanks has had so many good movies. My favorites: Splash (1984), Dragnet (1987), Big (1988), The Burbs (1989), Joe Versus the Volcano (1990), A League of Their Own (1992), Philadelphia (1993), Apollo 13 (1995), That Thing You Do (1996), Cast Away (2000), Road to Perdition (2002), Catch Me If You Can (2002), The Terminal (2004), Captain Philips (2013), Sully (2016), A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019).

The blonde girl on the bus who wouldn’t let Forrest sit down is Tom Hanks daughter Elizabeth. Tom Hanks based Forrest way of speaking on the kid who played young Forrest because the kid was from the south and spoke like that. There was going to be a sequel that had Forrest raising Forrest junior who had aids from Jenny and he was going to meet Princess Diana and be near famous incidents that happened in the 90’s but the script arrived the day before 9/11 and they decided it wasn’t relevant anymore. People figured that Jenny died of aids even thought the writer tried to deny it but she died in the mid 80’s when aids first started and doctors didn’t know what it was at first.
