Now if you want to understand why this guy is in the comment section. Ill explain. This guy mostly comments on videos related to Racing games. Most notably Need for Speed. This song features Styles of Beyond. Who also had a song featured in Need for Speed Most Wanted (2005 Version) which was Nine Thou. They also appeared as a feature on Shapeshifter by Celldweller which was also featured in the game. Shapeshifter was also the theme for Razor, the main antagonist for the game's career mode.

It may be just that I've loved the "Numb/Encore" song since high school so I have rose-colored glasses, but I always justified the discrepancy between Jay and Chester's verses as a story being told about the passing of a torch. It goes from a legend reminding people of their accomplishments to a new artist who wants to break out of their predecessor's shadow and do their own thing. Again, that was how my teenage brain justified the different topics, but I love the song due to that personal meaning-making.

What made this album solid for me was that they had actual talented and top tier lyricists featured throughout the album. Not obvious cash grab features put on to basically say, "Hey, we got this one hit wonder radio rapper featured on this." They got Black Thought, Common and Lupe all featured. Oh and this is the first time I think Skylar Grey got any mainstream attention as well.

Yeah, KoRn gets a lot of undue guff; while I can’t speak for their work post-Untouchables (except See You On the Other Side, which had a fucking Dem Franchise Boys mashup that was better than it had any right to be) there was a lot of raw emotion and genuine musicality in their first albums that their imitators sorely lacked. Plus, like a lot of kids in the early 2000s, I was introduced to the genre of heavy metal thanks to them, and for that I’ll be eternally grateful.

a few things 1: holy sweet meats how come I've never really paid attention to Mike Shinoda's other musical endeavors? 2: in your own time I recommend checking out the soundtrack to Raid: the Redemption Mike co-made it, it's amazing 3: while I know it didn't really pertain to the main subject matter of the video but...well you kind of avoided a big elephant in the room when mentioning Linkin Park (heads up it's really sad)... unfortunately on June 20th 2017 Chester Bennington passed away due to taking his own life, I bring this up as a reminder to always cherish every moment you have with people and to try your best to reach out and help others out of dark places mentally (sorry for the mood wiplash)

With Numb/Encore, I always felt that there was ALMOST a cogent song from the two halves, but that they needed something to connect it. Because, yes, Jay-Z's rapping about how amazing he is and how he'll blow you away...but he's also explicitly ending his career, saying goodbye, and asking for the crowd's approval, ("Do you want an encore, do you want more...For one last time, I need y'all to roar.") and those verses END, before Linkin Park's kick in...expressing a constant self-doubt and feeling of being trapped, and a desire to stop being what YOU want them to be, and instead be what THEY want to be. Like, if this were a purely Lupe or Kendrick joint, you could see it: the video would be them on stage, performing, and then walking into a dark backstage, and sitting as crew bustled around them, visually showing that they're nothing when they not performing, Like a more schizophrenic version Lupe's Bitch Bad video, where we saw the pain and cost of black performers having to portray black stereotypes to support themselves, but here we're meant to exult with the performer in the moment...so that the resulting recitation of how this performance is killing them is more impactful. Which works TEXTUALLY from the Numb/Encore mash-up, but does not read in performance. Because it's not one voice, we feel like the singer in Numb is purely a different person than the one in Encore, the music doesn't switch enough to reflect the more somber tone, etc.

Someone turned me on to Linkedin Park back then and I basically thought these guys were spitting philosophy. I think I was in a very dark place at the time and a lot of what was being made felt like it was speaking directly to me.

Good mention on Kenji. That song is so goddam good and heartbreaking. Also if you hadn't known Linkin Park's first album is named after their original band before Chester Bennington joined the group and Fort Minor is pretty similar to their days as Hybrid Theory. It's worth trying to look up their older songs if you can still find them.

Ashtarte Linkin Park was first Xero then Hybrid Theory (after Chester joined) and finally Linkin Park. When Chester joined it was still called Xero. He joined in the end of 1998/ beginning of 1999.

I’ve always enjoyed this song, because it was an introduction song to new listeners without being a traditional brag rap. Instead it was the crew hyping themselves and each other. Plus this has one of the most universally applicable hooks that catches you ad wont let go.

I'm commenting on break, so before the end of the video, can you do the "new" wave of rap/metal from bands like Hacktivist and DVSR?

Mike Shinoda has kept up the good work even to this day. If y’all haven’t, check out Post Traumatic, the album he put out last year that’s an exploration of the emotional roller coaster he went through after Chester Bennington’s suicide. Very powerful, relatable stuff, I think. Also, the video for “Ghosts” is hilarious. Deliberately low-budget in all the best ways.
