I just graduated from MCRD San Diego December 22, the hardest part for me were the hikes in Pendleton, partially because the pack was over half my weight, but it is a strong mind that will get you through the 13k, crucible and Reaper. If you have a weak mental spirit, you will not make it

My story of Joining the Marine Corps starts when I was a kid. I had a cousin named Daniel and we were born 4 days apart. He was the only cousin within my age group (the others were either older or younger and I couldn't relate with them). His dad was in the Army. My dad was in the Marines. We grew up playing war games (using sticks as guns and rolling around in the dirt), watching war movies and just wanting to be a soldier. Family matters led to their family separating from the rest when we were really young and I didn’t have contact with him for another 5 years. I would only see him another 4 times. I didn’t know how to contact him. My father sent me to a Marine Military Bootcamp in Harlingen, Texas when I was 13 years old. I LOVED IT. All the obstacle courses, drilling exercises, etc. It was fun. I didn’t mind the yelling (my dad yelled at me all the time), I didn’t mind the order taking (My dad made me do stuff all the time). We won the Marching competition and got a pin for it. I was in the Aerospace program, where they taught you how to fly a 4-seater airplane, which was super cool. It was physically and mentally demanding. I got yelled at a lot for being an idiot, but it helped me develop a tough mindset to battle Fear and Uncertainty. During high school I got caught up in a drug phase. All my plans went into the shitter. I didn’t really have many plans, but I had a lot of raw talent that could’ve been developed and helped me become someone greater than what I was at that moment. I have many great memories, but at the end of the day, I didn’t graduate college (but I was smart), I never held a steady job (but I was a great worker), I eventually started to lack the self-drive and self-will to get myself to where I actually wanted to be. This is one of my biggest mistakes. March 25th of 2020, my mother passed away. I was upset with myself because I hardly kept in contact with her. So many regrets of things that I wish I would have done. I became a baby. Whining and bitching, smoking and drinking to ease the pain, getting mad at everyone for my pain, for my struggle- essentially, being an absolute coward. January 2021, my grandmother passed away, and I was devastated. These were two of the most influential women in my life. These are two of the most influential moments in my life. My mind was in a haze about what to do next, and I started trying to figure out what I wanted. It all came back to when I was a kid and wanted to become a Marine. I was considering joining last year, shortly after my Grandmother passed away. I spoke to a recruiter and took the Pi-Cat, scoring an 88 on the AFQT (I qualified for every job in the Marines). However, I got scared because I thought I was jumping the gun and getting myself involved with something that I wasn’t certain about. So much has happened from that time to where I’m at now. With the help of my mother’s life insurance plan, I was able to purchase a fixer-upper and I started putting my own blood, sweat, and tears into that project. I had no carpentry experience, no plumbing experience, no electrical experience, nothing; but I utilized my resources (KZbin tutorials, tools and building materials from Lowes) to start getting the job done. Now I have the house in a habitable condition, and am trying to figure out what to do next. The Marines popped up again, and this time I’m deciding to act on it. I’m 26 years old, about to be 27 in May. Time has passed, reflection has taken place and I have started to gain more self-awareness and direction. I stopped doing drugs. I started working out everyday. I formed a plan of how I wanted my Military career to go. I started studying for the ASVAB. I talked to my recruiter. I started getting everything ready for me to have a basic and solid foundation for my next Chapter in Life. I was going to join as Active Duty, but if I end up enjoying the military experience, I would like to take a higher position and go Officer; so I’m choosing to go in the Reserves instead. I will get my foot in the door as a Marine, and use my free time as a civilian to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. Upon completion of my Degree, I will have the option to attend OCS (Officer Candidate School) but I’m hoping that my age at that time (I’ll probably be 30-32) won’t hinder me (This means I really have to stand out to get that commendation from my superior officers). I am going to attend MEPS tomorrow to take the official ASVAB, perform Medical Examinations, and Swear In. In conclusion, there are many paths that life can take you, good or bad. It’s what you learn from these experiences and how you use them to your advantage to take your life to the next level. I don’t regret my drug phase, but I know I would’ve been better off without it. I learned that I don’t ever want to do drugs again and that they’re a huge waste of money, time, and mental/physical health. (If you don’t need them, don’t take them; those who try to pressure you into doing them are probably not your friends). I am ready and excited to join the Marine Corps; this has been a dream that I have had since I was a child, and I will not allow fear, past experience, or anything else stop me from going in. It’s my life. It’s what I want. It’s what I’m going to do. For anyone who has made it to this part of my comment and story, thank you for reading. Don’t let anything or anyone stop you from living your life and getting what you want out of it. We only have one, so live it up: Don’t fuck it up. You don’t need to have all the answers, you just need to have the will to go out and fail trying to succeed. (You will fail more than you will succeed.) Time is the most valuable asset you have. My story is a clear example of Time being wasted on dumb things. Who knows where I would have been, and what I could have accomplished, had I not wasted it. Don’t Do The Same Thing. For them young bucks reading this, you may think 26/27 years old is OLD, but when you hit this age, you don’t feel much different than when you were 17/18 years old and you don’t even know where the time went. Time flies, Spend it wisely. If you want to Join the Marines. Go For It. 4 years out of your life is only 5% of the Human Life Expectancy of 79 Years, and could be 4 of the best years for you. Much love to everyone, and I hope you all live a very fulfilling life.

Sorry, to hear about the ex. I split with mine shortly before I went to bootcamp and it sucked a little bit, but I see it as beneficial now. My time in has been great. I graduated bootcamp August 2022, MCT September 2022, and MOS School December 2022. I graduated with a meritorious promotion to PFC from Bootcamp and meritorious promotion to LCpl from MOS School. It was tough going back out to the real world after, but I've been continuously improving. I'm a weekend warrior, but I still keep up with the standards. I've already acquired a leadership position at my unit and am hoping to promote to Corporal sometime next year. The amount of things I have learned since joining bootcamp is substantial. It's not like I'm a rocket scientist, but I am much stronger in health and in spirit. And yes, I definitely was the old man in bootcamp, along with 2 other recruits. It was hilarious when the Drill Master was scoping us out. I was 1st Squad Leader and he came up to the guy behind me, asked him his age (21) and said "Damn! You old as fuck!" and continued to talk a little shit. Then he walked up to me... He asked "And How Old Are You?" "28, sir." "GOD DAMN!" He pointed to the guy behind me and said "Now You Old!" Then he pointed back to me and said "But THIS Mutha Fucka has been kickin shit since 1775!" and we couldn't help but laugh. Hard Times. Good Times. But there will never be an experience like it. I loved it. (@@WokeEarth

With social media it's a lot easier to access information about the Marines. When i joined it was all words of mouth and other than recruiters sugar coating it, no one was talking. It was a major shock to most recruits, even the few of us who had a idea and made a point of being positive and being physically fit had a hard time. The idea that you will deal with it when you get to bmt doesn't cut it anymore.

@ForTheCorps
@ForTheCorps 2 жыл бұрын
Start doing negatives. Pull a chair or a bench up and hold yourself in the top position, chin over the bar, and do negatives (go down as slow as you can.) Get comfortable doing this and work on getting a full pull up. Use bands or any other resistance to assist you when doing pull ups. At the end of the day you just need to do more!

Yup, or start doing some hammer curls with some light weight. When you pull up knuckles facing you, you’re using your forearm muscles to pull up. If they are not strong, you won’t pull shit up.
