Pretext- I'm the Technical guy in one of the larger fuel retailers. This would be an essay to explain fully but it's not necessarily the fuel, it's the lay up time that's killing the fuel, ethanol is hygroscopic and will draw water in, so either go ethanol free (Esso Supreme in most of UK and not my brand), use Super (SUL), or drain it prior to layup. Or use a stabiliser. E10 won't phase separate until it reaches 2000ppm+ which means it will hold water like a sponge. My Blackbird hates SE UK E10 (lumpy and oddly loud) but is fine on fuel through Avonmouth, or supermarket SUL. Bare in mind there is no segregation of fuel between brands in fuel terminals, additive packages vary, but I think on this before adding 23p per litre to go with "premium" SUL.
@Morrismarina11 ай бұрын
Fair comment, but in reality 'laying a bike up' often isn't a planned action that one makes preparations for: one can easily begin with thinking "I'm not going to drain the bike because I might want to use it next week if the weather is better" but then the weather conspires to make that good day never come. Before you know it the bike has been standing one month, then another. As regards ethanol, it's pretty shameful that it was foisted on the vehicle using public as a fuel additive. I once saw an episode of a programme like 'How Do They Make That?' which explained where it came from. It noted that it was a by-product of beer brewing and sugar refining, pretty much implying that it was a disposal item until they found someone mug enough to buy it... which was the fuel industry... who then mixed it into their petrol, and who had a captive market of more mugs they could sell it on to.

I'm in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I'm 64 years old and have owned that exact model since 20,000km. I have NEVER had one single speed wobble with it. I have NEVER had the brakes let me down, the motor has never stopped working on the highway, I simply get on that motorcycle and drive it like I stole it every day. I'm in a townhouse, so my bike has been parked under a tarp for over 12 years with no heat, so the aluminum has shown its age by now. I try to put the best OEM parts on the bike when they need replacing, like my forks .. replaced seals AND bushings just because, " well,, you're there". My stock read shock still holds nitrogen, the stabilizer for the steering is still perfect ... I just LOVE this bike, the sound is great also. EVEN though I cannot rip through a canyon like a GP RACER, I STILL love to see if I can drag the footpegs when I hit my favorite back roads, so because of that, I replace both tires every year with Pirelli Rosso4 Corsa's. I used SuperCorsa's for about 5 years, but realized I just can't get them hot enough and KEEP them hot on the roads, the Rosso4 Corsa's get hotter. At the end of EVERY summer, my back tire is almost to the fibers in the center and only a bit of " meat " is gone off the sides, but WHEN I did need that tire to stick like glue, it did .... God Bless Pirelli tires. PS: The young guys get a kick out of the fact that I have NO chicken strips on my tires ... I drag that bike down till I hear a foot peg spark. I wear full " Old Guy" Leathers just like Kevin did, no ear buds in my ears ... my music is that redline. When I get stopped for speeding, the cop ALWAYS thanks me for not running, BUT when I take off the helmet and he realizes I'm older than his Father .. They always tell me to take it easy and let me go ... but of course, that's AFTER they checked my papers and everything is up to date, paid, and in order. I just finished installing 2 tires, 2 sprockets and D.I.D 525VX3 X-Ring Chain. ( I always use the best for chain, sprockets and tires). EBC FA379HH brake pads on stainless steel lines. Brand-new OEM steering stem bearings, I got 80,000 kms out of those factory bearings ... wow. Factory plugs, K&N air filter, fuel injector cleaning and for the first time, I had the fuel system flushed, with a new filter installed in the tank. The bike was a bit hard to start cold last season for the very first time ...now ....1/4 turn of choke, let the pump come up to pressure and vroooom .... running at 1,500 rpm instantly. I just noticed ONE thing about my bike by watching these SRAD videos lately .... I have NEVER once adjusted, messed with the " automatic " cam chain tensioner on my motorcycle. I cannot hear any looseness, and I remember reading years ago, that many guys took the automatic ones out and replaced it with a manual, but tightened it up too much, causing pieces of cam chain tensioner to break off, clogging oil passages ....so I never touched it in 80,000 kms. . . . My bad?
@mattmutane550211 ай бұрын
Good to see the old SRAD nearly back, Al! :) At the risk of repeating what most people probably already know, in case it's useful, Esso (at least in the South East of England) Supreme+ is actually Ethanol free!!! (even though the pump says it's E5) (as well as being 98RON, obvs). So for anyone running an older bike (and/or petrol engine based other stuff (like lawnmowers/chainsaws etc.), run that fuel for a better chance of not having a problem. I run my old bike on that, but put any old E5 standard in my modern bike. HTH! :) I also keep the tank full over winter when it's not being used to keep any air (=moisture) out of the tank, too! :) )
@carlstyth836811 ай бұрын

I've had my Y2k E1 ZX9r since March 2021, I never put E10 regular unleaded in it, always E5 Super, and so far no issues with my carbs diaphragms and O-rings in various places in the fuel system. I believe E10 is the main problem with the new fuels, especially if the bikes are rarely ridden, use the old bikes, they are better than modern bikes and much cheaper 😎

I think an earlier comment is on point. E10 obviously has 10% ethanol which absorbs moisture. It's this that causes problems rather than the fuel itself. If your bike is used regularly there's no real problems. My vtr seems to run better on E10 even through winter. I've had no issues so far that other people seem to have. One tip I was given though is that if you are going to park your bike up for a while make sure the tank is full so the air space is small. Smaller air space means less moisture laden air.

Hey guys, I've just bought a 1996 GSX-R 600 SRAD, inspired by the BBB series :D The SRAD was clearly the best bike and winner of the duo, even if Chris tried to say otherwise. This video is so timely as I've just went to pick it up today! The bike hasn't run since 2006, and there's some corrosion on the tank. The engine spins, but it doesn't start. The owner said that the bike was running when it was parked. Any tips on what I should do and things I should be looking for as preventive maintenance? I'll be changing all fluids, checking the spark plugs, maybe taking the carburetor apart to clean it up... any advices on things that usually go bad with these old bikes and that should be changed? The radiator seems in good condition, and the roses seem to be OK, not brittle or crumbling or anything. I'm used to work on cars but this is my first bike, I've just taken my motorbike driver's license at 33YO, so I don't know much about them, but I'm looking forward to get it running and eventually joining some trackdays once I feel comfortable in it :D Thanks for the series guys! You can't imagine how much of an inspiration your videos are!!!

I'm planning to keep my bikes pristine for a long time, and they get stored during winter once the salt hits the road (actually, when the weather gets bad). Here across the pond between the windmills, I only fill them up with Shell V-Power or BP Ultimate. Both no ethanol, although they are forced by regulation to put up the (up to) 5% sticker. Esso is still a bit vague, but I think they also do not use ethanol in their premium fuel, and I saw confirmation of that in the comments. I'm not taking the risk, and with the relative low mileage I make, I gladly pay a bit extra to keep the ethanol away from my bikes.

I'm surprised by JHS's poor knowledge of the troublesome elliptical late 90's/ early noughties Suzuki fuel pump gaskets. Putting that reconditioned pump assembly back in with just the original OEM gasket was never going to work. Having restored nine TL1000R & S models, these always fail. The mating surfaces need to be corrosion-free and not warped from over-tightening the M5 bolts, that only need 5nm and tightening in a specific sequence. Then simply using the original gasket as a pattern and making an additional gasket from 1.5mm Viton sheet, then sandwiching it in between the pump assembly and the OEM gasket works every time - even using an old but undamaged OEM seal. A new OEM or Quantum pattern seal with a Viton gasket is best of course for the long term..
