This is what I call a job well done. It is very hard to compare the settings since the most critical ones require restarting the game. I have an OneXPlayer with integrated Intel Iris XE card and I can run this game surprisingly well at higher settings. Comparing the differences like this is extremely helpful. Thanks Rafael! Yes the restarting between settings changes makes a slightly tedious task extremely tedious! The most frustrating thing is getting accuracy, the time between restarts is annoying but doing those restarts and coming back to a completely different looking scene due to clouds going over the sun etc.... zzzzzzzzz

I wish i could as well, but it's too difficult because a lot of this stuff is just in the open world and the FPS info is not possible to accurately capture. I could show it, but sometimes you lower the settings and the FPS gets wrose, and people would be questioning the data... and rightly so.

Hey mate, that must have taken ages to make. I’m 50 years old but I’ve not used windows before and I bought this gaming computer. I don’t know what the hell certain things do and am I stressing my vram. Well done on a really top vid that really looks under the hood. You have just saved my ass. But even when I had the wrong settings it still looked better than anything I had ever seen. I had bought World Rally Car 10 before this. I had not played it in four months because I discovered this. I've avoided the bug you've mentioned in the video. You can simply edit the config file of the game. The name of it is "UserConfigSelections". Just set the textures quality to "high" and the geometry to whatever you want. (0 - low, 1 - medium, 2 - high, 3 - ultra, 4 - extreme)

Very well made video. I can't imagine how much work and tedium went into comparing each of the different settings with how much you had to restart for some of them. That doesn't even include compiling all of the recordings, editing the video and adding commentary to go into detail with each setting. Thank you so much for the effort in making this video. it is extremely helpful, to know what each setting actually does as developers never properly explain (in any game) what a setting does in the game world. thanks to this video people can make an informed decision on changing the setting to what suits their needs and hardware, specially for lower-end computers, as there you often have to weigh off the value of quality vs. performance, and using this video, you can choose what to turn off or keep at a lower setting to save precious system resources without sacrificing too much quality. so again, thanks a lot for puttin gthis together and keep up the good work!

Glad they fixed the Ultra Setting now. Also, I noticed the small plants change lod levels depending on your settings. on Ultra and Extreme you will get the main model 3d plant but on lower settings it will always just be a billboard.

Environment geometry quality in my experience changes pop-in distance too, which makes the extreme setting almost mandatory IMO

I've just run a bunch of comparison tests on this, I couldn't see any difference with the pop in difference between all 6 geometry settings. It's possible the lower the vram you have the more this has an effect. I'll be interested to see if anyone can spot any differences, the video is rendering now, should be up tomorrow.

@@HecticRun thank you for checking. It might just be placebo. I only compared the 3 highest presets. Couldn't tell a difference between high and ultra but I felt less very close tree and bush LOD changes on extreme. No side to side comparisons though, this makes it harder.

The reason the "hood" reflection isn't effected is cause it's using screen space reflections, as well as cube maps. It's the same technique as they use for the water

Great work, thanks so much! The RTX reflections only apply to things from the car being reflected on its surfaces. The reflection of the mirror would for example show up on the side of the car when looking at it from an angle.

Thanks for the info, I looked into this one a little bit more and you are spot on correct. RTX effects aren't really coded heavily in this game. I think it's fine without it to be honest, the performance hit is just too much and the game looks amazing without it.

@@HecticRun There's already a mod to bring RTX into the game world car, but it only applies to your own car, and again it only applies to reflections off the car itself. For example, you'd see the spoiler reflected in the trunk lid, but no RTX reflections of the sky, only screen space. Thanks for the guide, I'm going to try to lower some of these settings from the highest to one below and see if I can hit a target 144 fps without noticing anything being lost, of course with the exception being environmental texture. I'm pretty sure you're correct about ultra being for the advertised quality on the Series X. I play on both, and while the XSX looks great, the detail on a high-end PC is off the charts.

Your forgot one major thing about texture quality, and also why the settings are tied to each other. Ultra Textures / Geometry contains static lightning data, and this data is only baked to the ultra / extreme geometry models/textures (it's the lightning bounces on the map objects, it's also called static lightning, or lightmaps) When you lower this setting to high, it switches to other 3D models wich doesn't contain lightning data, you can see what I mean here: 10:14 For example the house appear much darker, because it didn't contain the "lightmaps" (google this), this is to save space, but it's really dumb, the devs should have baked this lightning data on each level of setting exept low, because this lightning data takes VRAM, but no real performance since it's baked (pre-calculated). And the devs said it was a bug for the setting being tied to each other, but baking such data takes time, I just think they ran out of time and just baked the ultra/extreme. That's the big drawback, for example, A pc with a good graphic card, but not enough VRAM could just lower the settings and keep the lightning data, because it does half of the job in term of visuals. EDIT: 9:37 here, you can clearly see on the top the light being reflected from the ground to the house, it's a lightning texture, and on bottom, the game doesn't have baked light data for that object in high... wich is shame. It looks worse in the city and in the tunnels, since they will just appear fully bright or fully dark!!!

I think it’s actually even MORE complicated than that. This game has two lighting data sets - one for low-high textures, one for ultra-extreme, and the ONLY way to switch between them is also using the corresponding shader quality setting (low-high or ultra-extreme), otherwise it just breaks completely and results in what you see in this video - I would assume all texture comparisons were done with max shaders. This game is weird. Oh and btw, this was fixed in the November 8 update)

Excellent work on this video! Aside from one part that is, your speculation on the Environmental Texture Quality. This was simply a bug as you initially speculated (DF mentioned this too) and not some kind of Xbox upselling thing. Showing the Xbox Series X in your example does no justice to that machine, I doubt you have seen the XSX version of this game which maintains amazing quality even on the 4K/60 FPS "Performance" mode. Sorry, just had to rant about that part even though I am a PC gamer myself and other members of my family use the XSX. This bug was fixed in the recent hotfix. Edit: Had a look at your uploads and see you acknowledged this. Keep it up, and you've got one of the most appealing like/dislike ratios I have ever seen on a gaming video! Should you make a performance guide I will be sure to check it out.

Yeah my example was a very flippant thing, if i could take it out i would... to be honest i didn't contemplate anywhere near as many people would watch this video as they have... not even close. You are correct, i don't have an xbox to compare, and did no comparison. Beginners mistake.... I will be mindful of such things in the future when making any comparison. I have a suggestion for comparisons where you require the same location/weather/time of day. You could create an event with specific settings and use them after every restarts

Thanks for the suggestion! I will do this in future. I figured I can do this with the events already in the game too, but the cars in those create a higher level of variance than i would like. I've come up with a new benchmarking method as well where I can fairly accurately test any event in the game now and get a decent, consistent benchmark. ALTHOUGH.... i had some benchmakrs I was recording and when the season changed, so did the weather in the event.... sadface.... Very time consuming, but definitely gives a wider array of things i can test compared to the system benchmark.

Very nice video, super clear comparisons and the fact that you marked the sections is just perfect. I'm using an RX 6800 on 1080p (240Hz) which is stupid overkill, so everything on maxed out settings works perfectly fine with stupid high framerates. Interestingly enough, the one setting I had to turn all the way down is raytracing. While my GPU does support it and didn't give me any FPS problems in the autoshow, having it enabled would completely freeze my PC for 15-30 seconds at a time VERY often when scrolling through upgrade menus. It made upgrading a car take around 5 times longer than it normally would, and the tiny amount of fidelity that raytracing gives is just not worth that at all. I'm also still having a bug where my GPU usage falls off a cliff when a lot of particles are being thrown up by cars (water, dirt, etc). This results in scenarios where I drop from 100% GPU usage and ~150 FPS to ~60% GPU usage and as low as 35 FPS at times.

The particle issue sounds like it could be a driver issue. I don't see this with my 3080. But i can understand the RTX thing, it's fine to just leave that off, it's just livery stuff and it's not really noticeable but it has the ability to really slow your pc down if your pc struggles with RTX.

Good video but 1 more thing. You could have talked about the performance hit of every setting in case of low vs. extreme as it yields less work and gives an idea. Settings will impact performance differently whether the system is gpu or cpu bound of course but at least with your case it could give reference.

7:51 Ultra texture clearly have something wrong, whenever there is a large kerb like the one to drain flood on certain road the textures are like in really low quality (only this part of the road, that's odd to look).

your hard work is admirable man. its just perfect. cant wait for your "best visuals/fps" video. i also wanted to ask if you can make a small video about hdr in this game. its a very hard and tricky thing to test but i'd love to see that. i dont even know if the numbers in that section represent "nits" or not. i dont know if the default 300 value for the brightness will clip details or if the color saturation on the default is the realistic and right option even if it looks a little dull

Thanks! I wish I could help with HDR, but i checked all my monitors and none of them actually support HDR. I have a Benq monitor I just got that I thought had HDR support (one of the reasons i got it) and i press the HDR button and it turns out it "emulates" HDR.... so the game still doesnt pickup that it's a hdr monitor, so i can't help on that one unfortuantely.... at this stage. Glad you liked the video!

@@HecticRun if it supports the hdr then the windows hdr option can be turned on if you cant sadly its not a hdr display. and it should be turned on otherwise the ingame hdr option wont show up. also its faily important to check your gpu control panel and be sure that its outputting the right color format for hdr (ycbcr 10/12 bit) .anyway thanks for the helpful videos
