As someone who served in the Marine Corps and did two tours overseas, getting into a fire fight is not something you can really prepare for. You never know how you will react until you’re in the situation, period. It’s not like you see in the movies where it looks all cool and everyone is a badass. It brings out every emotion you can think of and I can tell you from experience, everyone handles it differently.
@robbiewalker84032 жыл бұрын
That's the problem with all these "pull yourself up by your bootstraps, soar like a fearless eagle and be a man" types. Whether you believe in free will or not, it's not really up to you how you react in that sutuation. It's up to whatever chemicals decide to balance themselves in your brain at that given moment that dictate what happens.
@michaelholder982 жыл бұрын
Hoorah Brother! This is why we need to double police salary and implement a hardcore program to become a cop and turn it into a profession where talented, high integrity people will make it. The talent goes where the money flows. That is the number 1 way to fix this problem. Change. Increase the pay and benefits substantially and also the requirements, tests, and continuous education training and overtime, we'd see a huge improvement. Marine Mike

Fouad, you did a good job moderating the discussion on guns. It was very good. The problem with Guy's assertion that more people with guns could've stopped the school shooting earlier is two-fold. Yes, it is possible they could have stopped it sooner. It's also possible they could have accidentally shot other kids, *which is statistically more likely from common citizens* (and is the strongest argument for ending the right to gun ownership, because it's based on math and not feelings or idiotic theories). That's one. Two: if there are good-guy shooters and bad-guy shooters in the school and law enforcement does breach, it's that much more likely they shoot someone besides the bad-guy. A lot more likely. I have strongly mixed feelings about the PD not allowing parents to go in and be heroes, but there is a reason they didn't allow it.
@martinkovacic96442 жыл бұрын
As a Europian i cant understand how people chose guns over childrens lifes or we have a gun problem, lets have more guns. Its so easy to solve this, but majority of people dont want to give guns away, not because of protection, but because they love them.
@hisbassness2 жыл бұрын
@@martinkovacic9644 People here in America treat the Constitution like it's the Holy Bible: perfect since the beginning of time and applicable without change forever more. And it's just not the case. There are reasonable and valid arguments for maintaining gun ownership, but the vast number of people who insist it's traitorous to even consider restrictions--even in the face of these constant tragedies--are not experienced exercising reason in any regard, in my experience. And it is disheartening.
@Madchris88282 жыл бұрын
@@hisbassness so im curious what do you do in a place like Chicago, with tough guns laws that has usually high double digit shootings almost every weekend? How do you stop that? Also what do you do on the undocumented weapons, and how do you stop a psycho from getting them? What law will stop them? There are literally more weapons in the US than there are people. Europeans always act like there is some simple solution to all this. There isn't.
@hisbassness2 жыл бұрын
@@Madchris8828 I mean, if you want an absolute solution, the only absolute solution to gun violence is to eliminate guns. That's obvious and, I think, indisputable. It's also extreme. That actually is a simple idea, but not simple in execution. It'll never happen, and I'm not so sure it should happen. But I would suggest a solid first step is strict regulation *nationwide* on gun purchases and ownership, and tight border controls would probably go a long way towards solving the problem. Having to pass a significant background check, having to prove on a continuing basis you are in possession of the gun, having to store the gun safely, having to engage in a reasonable amount of practice annually; these are all steps I think are pretty common sense and would improve the gun violence statistics. It's not an absolute fix, but it would absolutely improve things. Now, a hot take solution I might suggest, that is not as common sense and would not be widely supported, would be to label the NRA a terrorist organization/sympathizer, freeze all their assets, and basically do whatever else to basically give them the finger and take them out of the equation. Without their lobbying I think maybe *something* could get done. If there's anything I'm tired of in politics, it's the lack of definitive action.
@Madchris88282 жыл бұрын
@@hisbassness a bunch of laws isn't going to stop psychos. And unless you can think of a way to stop all blackmarket purchases this won't end. There are plenty of cases in the US where authorities knew someone had a long history of violence and yet they did nothing to prevent the tragedy. There are also many cases where people used their weapons to stop a shooter like the case in Texas where a crazy dude shot up a church a passerby stopped him dead in his tracks. All more harsh laws will do is make it harder for good Americans to protect themselves. Crazies will still have access regardless so better to have more good to combat the bad. In most places you already have to go through a pretty extensive background check for a purchase anyways

Love the bro chat Fouad. The key is preparation before an incident occurs, and yes you hit the needle on the head Fouad, about a quarter of cops are actually going in harm's way. I'm a sergeant at my department and I make sure ballistic 🪖 helmets, ballistic 🛡️ shields, and the pump action shotguns w/door breacher, and Ar's are ready to go in emergency situations. This may not eliminate fear of getting seriously injured or death, but at least you stand a fighting chance. I didn't see any shields or shotguns w/door breachers carried by officers on TV, that's preparation - blow the door lock off as Guy said and enter w/shield neutralizing the threat.

As a former Royal Marine and Police officer, you never know how people will react in high stress life and death situation till it happens. I have seen terrible police officers but I was lucky enough to work with great guys and girls who joined the police for the want to protect the public. One day we were finishing up a shift and having breakfast and a call to suspected suicide bomber, we weee two minutes on foot away and all we had was a radio as we were booking off shift, but we ran in, I tackled the guy to the ground. At the time wasn’t thinking, as I was searching the guy and bomb squad xrayed the bag and said “oh shit” And ran back, at that moment I questioned my choices, generally training takes over. In the school shooting whilst I don’t have all the details, there are often senior officer making bad decisions and holding the officers back. The border officer probably wasn’t having an order to hold. I can’t imagine none of those officers did not want to go in

@pogmalog2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm in full agreement. I'm in the UK so the situations is radically different here. The prevalence of weapons in America mean its impossible to ban guns. I don't think there can be a one size fits all approach given how each state differs. The cultures are so different in terms of this type of thing, I think it's important from the outside looking in that there's definitely aspects we won't "get" compared to your average American.
