Is unfortunate that there have to be sides. For Carlina/Nettie, it has to be hard to be around your bio mother, you openly hates the woman who raised you, and wishes her harm, or at least jail time. That must be exhausting and painful. It's a harsh situation but the feelings you have for people (even a kidnapper) don't just disappear-- think of adoption stories: when people meet their bio families, they aren't expected to forget about them, and most bio parents are grateful to the adoptive parents for raising their child. Joy definitely does not need to feel grateful, but to say that her daughter is in the wrong here, for loving the woman who raised her, seems misguided to me.

I find Carlina's reaction so, so weird. I'd be furious to find out my mother had lied to me and kidnapped me to not even raise me and abuse me. But I also get that the rest of her family she was raised with didn't even know so how could she not want to maintain a relationship with them? My daughter sees several of my friends as her family and I don't think much of anything would make her not want to be with them.

That was my immediate thought, the abductor then had a sick baby. I was worried that someone who was in such a bad frame of mind that they would steal a baby certainly would not be rational or clear enough to look after a baby, least of all a sick baby. It really is damming evidence that the abductor was so selfish that jeopardizing a baby's life was acceptable.

We had a similar case in South Africa of a child that was stolen from the hospital called Zephany Nurse, now known as Miché Solomon. Drew a lot of public attention, especially when she was found at 17. She was placed in the same school as her sister and things spiraled from there. I know that there was a lot of controversial news on the fact that she seemed to prefer the family that abducted her but I think that this is a very difficult situation, one we will never understand. I’m the same age as carlina, from nyc too, tbh in 1987 things were very different than they are today. Media did not infiltrate every aspect of life as it does today. Men were also not even commonly in the delivery room yet in the 80s, and there was no social media to post pics to right away, things were more private back then, women didn’t commonly share their belly in pictures like they do now, and even maternity clothes were much more modest/covered up then...so I can see why this wasn’t that weird.
