Greetings Munchkins and new viewers to the channel. Let me first start off by saying the video is of a recently rescued hamster that was previously kept inside of this enclosure and posted to FB Market which is prohibited, but the past owner did it anyways. The point of the video is so that you're able to see how this hamster lived prior to come to my rescue that I founded here in my state. Unfortunately people are unaware that these small enclosures are very dangerous and unsuitable to hamsters/gerbils/mice. The hamster in this video wouldn't come down from his wheel when I got home and due to not having my travel carriers in my cars trunk that day, he had to be transported inside his original cage. So he came out of it during this video when I felt he calmed down. It's important to understand that these videos are educational in bringing awareness to the animal hobby by looking at what we see. Content sensitivity warning: While some have made it apparent that they don't like what they see, we need to talk about this instead of looking the other way. Nothing good will ever be done to those not wishing to address the problem but instead shame those who do address it because they themselves cannot look or listen to intentional or unintentional animal neglect. People like myself in the rescue community try our best to help out those in need and by making videos of our rescues, we share with you guys part of what we do to educate why animals need better. Please do not shame people trying to promote understanding and education about the neglect of the pet community because companies are misleading consumers with their inappropriate pet products. I share with you something that may be hard to swallow to some and if that's the case this channel may not be for you. We need to begin to desensitize ourselves if anything is going to change in this world. What will you guys do to end the suffering? Do you rescue animals? Volunteer your time to animals in need? Adopt? Spread awareness? Donate? Please stop shaming people actively helping because they talk about their traumas or experiences while rescuing, to educate the public. They actually make a huge difference in the lives of not just animals but people as well. Support those who are actively helping the community out and let's lift each other up instead. Thank you.

I happen to work at a pet store, and I’m constantly telling people that the cages the store sells are garbage. I recommend tanks to try to get them a better enclosure. I hate it and will often refuse a hamster if they choose a little cage or try to house two in the cage. The store loses sales, but I don’t care. The animal’s welfare is my first priority.

i do the same thing!! i haven’t been their too long so i haven’t gotten the confidence to refuse people hamsters but i’m getting there. i always share my story about making a bin cage because the cage i bought was too small (i learned after i got my hamster unfortunately, but i fixed it!) i had this grown man buy a hamster who agreed to build a bin cage, and when his hamster chewed out of the cardboard carrier he asked me to watch it while he went to buy a bin for the cage and i happily agreed because this hamster was incredibly friendly. and this man came back with a HUGE bin for the cage and it made me sooo happy! i just know that hamster has a good life and i’m happy that i got to inform his owner about proper care ❤️❤️

We rescued a Craigslist hamster several months ago from a family/kid with a sad Kaytee enclosure. We built a bin cage for him and moved him in right away. He's been the happiest little guy! He's got loads of bedding to burrow in, plenty of chews and toys, tunnels, a BIG wheel, and good quality food. Thank you for all your videos, they gave us the confidence to rescue a hamster and give him the best life!

I work at a petco and we get satins in every once in a while still. I've worked there just under a year and seen 5 or 6 I think. Sometimes with the regular short haired Syrians, sometimes with the ""fancies"". We even got a satin (I think also rex) long hair boy once, he was gorgeous and it hurt me to not take him home We can't order them specifically, but they pop in every now and then. Also I know I know, petco employee. But my favorite part of my job is being able to advocate for these guys and set their owners up with proper enclosures and advice, rather than letting them grab the smallest and cheapest thing. We are allowed to deny sales if the care the animal will receive isn't suitable

I think it's important that some of the workers know about the animals care because I have heard of many lazy people who don't research and then think they can get all the information they need from the pet store workers. Many are probably parents who really don't want a pet though but just couldn't say no anymore to their kids wanting a hamster.

Kids who see them as toys and adults who don't care shit about specially small animals, many think that specially hamsters don't need anything and see them as throw away pets. Though I don't understand why so many get pets without looking up information about them but think they can get all the information they need from the pet shop workers.
@appleglassjuice11

Its simply because of lack of research. I use to own a cage similar to this a couple of years ago. Of course, I had no intent to harm the ham or abuse the ham, but I was in 5th grade and my mother had done extremely little research. And, of course, Petstores sell them. How is anyone supposed to know of the place where they trust animal care that sells crap is not good for them? Besides the consumers, its also HEAVILY the companies fault that sells that shit. We shouldn't need to DIY a good hamster cage there should already be some available for the market.

So i've been binge watching these videos for a good day and half, and I'm just getting round to this one. Seeing that CritterTrail cage kind of made my heart drop a bit. Mainly for the reason that this was the exact cage I was provided at a Petsmart when I adopted my Roborovski Hamster. Her name was Tiny, and I kept her in this cage for about a week before I switched her over to an old Fish tank that I no longer used. The vivid thing I remembered a lot was hearing her attempt to climb and chew the bars, despite having quite a few chew toys. Needless to say she seemed a LOT more active and happy in the newer tank, especially with the deeper bedding and bigger sandbath to use. I had a feeling tho by the time I did adopt her she was getting up in age. She live a rather long time but when I graduated from HS, she passed a few days after. So about 2 years and a quarter.

I had my first hamster when I was around 5 so it was up to my parents to make sure we had good care. We started out with a critter trail but then switched to a large enough tank and both my Syrians lived happy lives after that and tanks last so much longer! It lasted through 2 hamsters and some fish before we got rid of it so it’s more cost effective in the long run. I plan to get another hamster within the next year ago I am just waiting until I can provide a little more space. I plan to try out a bin cage for a dwarf hamster this time.

One of my friends flatmate recently adopted a hamster that came in a similar situation. I was very grateful that he listened to my advice and has since managed to upgrade her cage, buy her a play pen, chew toys, correct size wheel and bedding etc. The flatmate argued that because she lived in fine in it with her previous owner means that it was an appropriate set up and was very annoyed at any advice/ change I suggested. Why take on an animal if you are willing to give it the best life possible? If you can’t afford to give them the basic correct care of aren’t willing to spend money, then maybe you shouldn’t own an animal at that current moment in time. Once you’ve brought the main bulk of items for a hamster they’re relatively easy and cheap to maintain. But you’ve got to be willing to spend some hard money at first. The most expensive thing is buying bedding for me but with a big enough cage (IKEA detolf) I don’t have to buy it frequently as it doesn’t get wasted 🤝 But anyways their hamster is much happier now. Still many improvements to make but it’s nice that my friend is trying and has gone out of own way to buy things for her when the flatmate has refused to so themselves!

My hammy has a bin cage with plenty of chews and toys, 6 inches of bedding, an appropriately sized wheel, and good quality food with a good diet. He does, however, use kaytee tubes and hideouts. I let him use kaytees tubes and hideouts because he is a tiny dwarf hamster and there is no way that he would be able to get stuck. For him, the tubes are like massive burrow tunnels that he loves to go in. His tubes lead to two kaytee hideouts he has- and he even sleeps in one of them sometimes. I treat him very well ^^! Don’t feel bad. I’m rehoming two robos to someone I educated on care tomorrow and all my past hamsters escaped and died from these types of cages, one hung itself, and one giant Syrian male got stuck in a tube all the time and eventually died doing so. I was 8. I didn’t know any better and neither did my family. It’s best to do research before getting a pet. But, if you already didn’t, don’t beat yourself up for it. The best you can do at that point is learn better and then do better.

About two days alter, it stuffed it's shavings in the side tunnel, and tried going down, ended up getting stuck, and suffocated/died. I had no idea how wrong it was. Growing up my mom always put our small pets in small cages. I'm disgusted since I always loved animals and went to college for Animal Care when I got older. I'm thankful we have videos like this now and plan on educating myself when I eventually have children and educate them on proper animal care.

I don’t usually shop at big chain pet stores and instead I go to a local coop that has a big dog barn with dog and cat supplies and also has about three isles of small animal stuff as well as livestock things but no live animals (except some time in spring were they sell cute lil chickies from good reputable breeders). But it’s really great because the people who own it actually care about animals and what their customers and giving to their animals and don’t sell thing that aren’t fit for them. I feel like every time I’m there I could just close my eye and pick something random off the shelf for my pet and feel good knowing it’s healthy and safe! They don’t sell crappy hamster cages and it impossible to find a cage smaller then the minimum requirements for animals marked as for that animal in fact I think they have their bunny and guinea pig cages at a completely different stop from hamster cages so people don’t go buying a hamster sized guinea pig cage I know not everyone has places like this but you should definitely check in your area to find out if there’s better local places to go rather then supporting big chain pet stores! It’s my dogs favorite place to go and when she’s there she always want to jump up on the counter to see the cashiers and get a treat! It’s really funny because she goes out of her way to suck up to the people there but would never jump on a counter anywhere else and be so interested in the workers 😍

great video!! alot of people buy pets out of impulse without actually researching to ensure that they can provide a healthy, clean and happy environment for their pet. thats why there are many people simply getting rid of their pets because theyve gotten bored of it or dont want to care for it. for anyone thinking of getting a pet; dont just get one because its trendy and cute... make sure that you will fully commit to providing that animal with a safe and loving environment. animals are lifetime commitments and if you cant commit your time and energy to taking care of that animal, then you should not be a pet owner.

I kept seeing people trying to sell their hamsters and "everything included" between $60-$200😱 like WTF!? And I'm in Canada so I'm seeing this on Kijiji.

A lot of people just want to sell everything for exactly what they paid for it and get all their money back, which is really unreasonable, and they should only be charging a "rehoming" fee.

My hamster used to bite the bars on his cage. It was a temporary cage because the large one we ordered had arrived broken, so we had to buy that one so that until the new one would arrive. He was really agitated and I felt bad because I knew he wasn’t that comfortable. I took him out for most part of the day for that week until the large tank arrived and he was happier like that than he was in the cage.

I had a very small space (ok bigger than THIS but still too small), and i made her a playground thing, and connected it with the cage. This is like 3X the floreplace of the cage, and i think it is good now. She doesnt climbing and biting anymore, which i know, is a good sign.(sorry for bad grammar, not mother language)

The little cages are so mainstream that it’s hard for people not to assume someone complaining about their size is just overly eccentric. That’s definitely how I felt initially. It’s kinda sad, and you don’t want to come off as aggressive because then you just seem crazy and they’re even less likely to listen.

I had a mouse who I had fed for a short time Kaytee pellets but I started to noticed he was sneezing more than he should be. I tried removing the hay as a nesting material, minimizing the amount of paper bedding but nothing changed with the sneezing. I then thought maybe it's the pellets sense his eyes and nose were clear, changed the food pretty quickly after and the sneezing was then gone.

One of my first pets that was completely mine were gerbils.... I was quite young and just happy to finally have my own pet (we also had one cat at the time). Although they both lived past the number I was told they would- I feel extremely guilty for the care they had. Their cage was too small for them (although we kept it clean) and I didn't feed them any hay... Now I'm an adult and my love for animals has only grown which caused me to do a ton of research, making me realize my mistakes as a kid.... One day I would like to properly, lovingly, care for gerbils the way I didn't as a kid as a sort of way to make up for my mistakes.

Ah I feel so bad for him! I used to have the same one when I was around 5/6 years old, and my hamster put bedding in the “wheel” dome at the top, and we couldn’t get her out, finally it snapped off and we had to buy a new “cage” and that one was also SO terrible. I’m so happy I was able to upgrade all my hamsters I have now, all the 5 that I have are in 40+ gallon bin cages! (Including dwarfs, and Chinese hamster)

I can't imagine how terrible that cage must smell, my thought process with my animals is that is if notice this cage smell or think that it's gross their water isn't clear, I change it. Hamster cages can be hard to clean but how did this owner not realize constantly being around pee is terrible for anyone/any animal?!

I wish parents that buy their kids hamsters did more research, you can still have a “cute” cage that’s natural and large. It’s sad that people don’t do research, idk how anyone could see their poor hamster in a cage like this and not feel bad.

Our hamster has a cage that is about 4 times that big.. we have her for about two months now and you can really see that our daughter is her human mother. At one point you said he was old and slow....then you said he was fairly young so curious as to what you think his age might be. We just lost our Syrian but we had him almost 3 years. We watched every video possible and he was in a 50 gallon, 12” wheel, and we made him a 2nd story of wood. He died a happy old man.

A had a mouse in one of those cages, but it didn't take long to realize it's way too small even for a 1-oz mouse so I upgraded to a huge bin cage. The only thing that will get companies to stop selling this crap is for people to stop buying them. Money is everything.
