Welcome back to my Rescue's intake stories where I run a small foster based rescue for hamsters/gerbils/mice. This story is about a rescue and not a surrender where we had to go and take this animal out of a bad situation when being listed online. Upon first glance at the ad we saw nothing wrong with the hamsters health and overlooked it. But thanks to our volunteers, we discovered this animal needed our help the most. We are happy to have stepped in for this poor hamster. This is Lucy's story.

Leaving a pill bottle near any animal, no matter filled or empty, is down right neglectful, arrogant, and shows how little they cared for this living thing. I don't have any hamster in my care however, I do have two dogs. I always make sure my prescriptions are out of react from them since they can be toxic and cause injuries if consumed. I one time freaked out when I found my dog chewing on a pill that I later discovered was a vitamin once removed from her mouth. This person probably thought that if she cleaned it out (being generous with that assumption) and left it in the hamster would be totally fine. What actual nimrod thinks this is a safe "toy" or "hide?" I hope this person never has a small pet or even any pet in the future seeing how in her eyes they're just decorative pieces with no more life in them than a vase!

I work in a pharmacy and pill bottles are not safe for animals. Even if you clean them well, there can be residue left behind and the animal can get really sick or die.

As someone who works at Petco... Unfortunately the company does not require any prior animal experience and only educates us on how to clean their tanks and very basic information on a COUPLE species we sell. We all have to have the passion ourselves to google and lookup every animal we have and teach ourselves about them, to then teach you. ALWAYS do your own intensive research before purchasing an animal. There are so many instances where the employee selling you an animal hasn’t even been with the company for a month, which then makes all of us look bad when someone claims we taught them or didn’t teach them something. The takeaway I ask for is please don’t assume we are experts on every species, we carry hundreds of different kinds of animals and that doesn’t even include fish. The company does NOT require previous education nor provides that level of education to us

Unfortunately not everyone who works at Petco, PetSmart or other pet stores are there for the animals. As one who use to work at a petstore for 2+ years, I had the worst experience with coworkers. Absolutely awful some people only see this as a job and nothing more. Don't even care, sell two beardies in 20 gallon tanks, or gerbils in plastic enclosures. It's a hard battle. And you're right, no one teaches you anything. They only care about how to deep clean, handle and to look for illness which they don't even describe all ailments. Your companion or animal leader needs to teach you and if they don't, your store suffers with animal Care.

@@Yeewen88 I agree that no animal should be neglected at all, every animal deserves love and care. To answer your question he would either act very territorial or be very scared to the other gerbils, he is quite confident both when he was with his brother, and on his own (he isnt even scared of the cats), so I decided that it would be best for him if he was left with my attention, rather than with another gerbil.

That neglect was so awful and sad. If you deny an animal of their basic needs, that means you don't deserve the animal and you don't know how to properly provide for it. If you have a pet, you must commit your entire life to that animal. That means caring for it's needs as well. I'm so glad you rescued little Lucy. She never deserved that kind of poor treatment.

FYI. This coating is actually very common in East Asia. It is one of the most popular coatings, called 'pudding'. They tend to be more friendly to humans than the original wild color and the white color (but maybe just in the Asian hamster community). And usually, 9 out of 10 SUPER overweight hamsters are in this color.

A few nights ago, I had a really sad, heartbreaking dream about how I had forgotten all about my now deceased hamster, Houdini. In the dream, he had come back to life and he was sitting on my dresser, and I had a horse in my house. The saddest part was I had completely neglected him (don't worry, this absolutely was not real), and his food dish was full of dirty water because I hadn't fed him for weeks and weeks. Very sad.

Needless to say she got her hamster taken away by the humane society after 1 month. Hopefully Peanut has a better life now.❤️

That's a great story. Like I said u have taught me alot. Our Russian Dwarf is living well thanks to your information. I had no idea about proper hamster care because mainstream information was extremely misleading. I didnt know the food or cage was wrong, and I paid alot of money for what I thought was the best. Thanks to your channel our Russian Dwarf hamster will be living in luxury from now on. I did rush out and buy the foods u recommended along with the only cage u use. I also upgraded his wheel and toys, and got him proper apple tree chew sticks as well. If Petsmart and other chains had these things available, and the information was there I would have done it from day 1. I am upset that it has cost my family and this poor hamster both so much. But when u know better, do better. We absolutely love him, and can't imagine abusing any animal. I wish there was something we could do about Petco and Petsmart. The misinformation, cages, food, and care advice they are pumping out is abusive. Also these food companies are knowingly selling expensive mixes which are not actually nutritionally complete as they have advertised. The whole thing is disappointing...

One wonders whether some have any time for anyone besides themselves. I have timed my daily animal husbandry chores for my hamster. If I do this swiftly I can clean and feed the food bowl and the water bowl, shift the sand bath/litter box within two minutes. My hamster watches me do these chores and I enjoy watching my hamster watching me... However, very rarely am I in a rush...

I switched my syrian off of the Kaytee Fiesta mix as she did not like it and I was concerned about her weight due to her being very picky with the feed. The bag of food Lucy came with is definitely the Kaytee Fiesta mix. My hamster is now on the Wild Harvest advanced nutrition feed and loves it way more than the kaytee feed
@MunchiesPlace
@MunchiesPlace 4 жыл бұрын
Please change the food as that food is lesser quality than Kaytee. Wild harvest is poor quality nutrition sold mainly at walmart. Didn't appear to have water residue on it so we assumed it was used as a chew toy or someone just dropped it in by mistake which would mean they were careless. Either way Lucy is out of that situation now and in better hands. 🙏 We saved here, but there may be many more like her if only people would spend the time to properly learn to care for them.

Have you tried chew toys made from different materials? Also a trick to try is to soak wooden toys in berry juice. There are tutorials on KZbin. It'll tell you what fruits are safe.

Sometimes they don't chew often. No need to be panicked. Sometimes chewing can relieve stress. Maybe your hamster is comfortable right now and doesn't have a need to chew. They will instinctively chew if they feel their teeth are growing and will gnaw on stuff when stressed.

Sadly, I think that the water bottle cap was supposed to be a water bowl, even though it fails at being one on every level. But disappointingly, that seems to be the case because of the other examples pitiful care given to Lucy.

Yeah we didn't realize how poor of a situation she was in. If she didn't get rescued in time, they may have had a dead hamster on their hands. Thankfully fate helped us out with her. But unfortunately there are hamsters or animals like her that don't get that second chance. It's unfortunate but proper education is what we try to share with everyone to prevent problems like this from occuring.

Those balls are actually great to hang in rats cages as nesting pods! If you have a rat rescue in the area they might be interested in taking those off your hands.

@Munchie my hamster is having surgery (tumor removal). His appointment is at 7:30. They told me no food after midnight. And no water in the morning. What’s your experience? Their metabolism is so high would it make him weak to not eat for that long? And what time should I take away his water? And of course I’ll call and ask the vet again just trying to see what your experiences were like.

Um I have a question, you know how you can adopt from a pet store like they have animals in the back can I do that even though it’s from a pet-store? 🤨
@MunchiesPlace
@MunchiesPlace 4 жыл бұрын
Petco has their adoption program. You have to call and ask if anyone surrendered a specific pet to their store or just go in and see if there are any "Adoption" animals on the sales floor with a "Think adoption first" sign. All adoption fees go to their charity, not to the company, so make sure you understand it's for surrendered/homeless animals only and not their inventory of living animals they get weekly from suppliers. Otherwise petsmart does have a similar program but they house "partnered rescues" small animals and reptiles instead and will have them inside their store on a display table which lists their partnered rescues name. Otherwise petsmart does have an in store adoption program and place their animals in the back, but they only rehome the animal if it's non sellable and have removed it from the sales floor due to injury, old age, medical or returned to the store within 2 weeks of their return policy. So this method is them cleaning out their inventory for more desirable animals but their adoption fee is free. Petco honestly does it a lot better than Petsmart imo. But if you live in the UK, i hear pets at home now has their own adoption program too. So check it out, call and ask. :)

Is there any way I can talk to you about a gerbil I took in from my cousin. She was keeping the gerbil by herself in a CritterTrail. I took the gerbil in because she posted on SC that she was giving it away...because she couldn't take care of it. I moved her into a 20 gallon tank and even found another gerbil for her to house with (I haven't picked up the other gerbil yet) I have a hamster that I've spent my own money getting the right enclosure(I'm 16) I dont have a job yet and really just need a good home for the gerbil...do you have any suggestions?

Sadly your hamster maybe approaching the end of their short life. Hamsters have a very short life, around one and a half to two years. Most never see their second birthday. Its something we all have to deal with, no one lives forever...

That is so incredibly sad. Honestly it sounds to me like someone who views the hamster like a wild rodent, so to them a pest, and treats them accordingly. Which is of course completely incorrect but I've met people like this unfortunately. I wonder if thier child was given the hamster by someone else. I don't understand, how anyone could treat an animal this, even if you don't like the animal it is an innocent creature that can't fend for itself and is reliant on your caring for it appropriately. I admit I'm deathly afraid of snakes but if my son got a pet snake i would still ensure it has all the care it needs. People like this make me sick.

I think they were using the cap as a water bowl and the bottle as a chew toy... Nevermind plastic isn't a great chew toy, a wood or cardboard chew is better...My hamster enjoys the smallest of Whimzees chews, although I have to ration them as my hamster tends to like them better than his food...
