Back ten years ago when I was a child I was guilty of unintentional neglect because I kept my roborovski in a critter trail. I've learned so much from this channel since I started watching it a while back. We cant change our pasts but we can change our actions going forward.

@Hamster Life0302 yeah that's a common mistake I think. Luckily thanks to the internet we can learn more and spread more information for the proper care of pets.
@KikiYushima3 жыл бұрын
Same. I was a kid and had hamsters and kept them in the awful plastic cages. But this was also the 90s so a lot of this care wasn't known or at least wasn't widely available. Similar when I had a parakeet. I've watched the channel BirdTricks and I learned how horrible my care was: a tiny cage, an all-seed diet, no foraging/destructible toys, etc. The _only_ mistake we didn't make was clipping. We kept that bird flighted, though it did make getting it back in the cage a bit of a nightmare lol.

I'm so sorry. 😞 It's true it's heart breaking. They're kept on horrible care and usually they're seen as accessories. The person will bring them to their local market place or list then online for sale via FB, which is funny because FB doesn't allow the sale of animals. But it's not regulated. There was one with obvious signs of mites, being sold with her pups. It was heart breaking. But the comments and likes were so high. Animal welfare is not even a thing for some people. 😭 And from my impression I got from my fans and what I saw online, is that they're cheap, easy to breed so if one dies it's easy to replace. God damn it's heart breaking.

It's tough when there are such huge intakes that rescues and shelters can barely cope. My two newest additions to the rat family are lab rescues. A lab with horrible conditions and abuse was shut down in Hamburg last year and, among many other animals, there were 1000 rats looking for a place. Even shelters that weren't equipped at all for small mammals took some of them in. Gladly, my boys and some of their friends were taken from a tiny cage in a cat shelter to a private rescue. They are so friendly and curious, it just shows that they were in great care.

I live in the UK and you may be surprised, but it's a lot harder than you think to find ethical items for hamsters. The cages are too small, the flying saucers are in pet shops, wheels are literally no bigger than like 12cm. The thing I've done is self-built a homemade hamster bin cage made out of a big box by "really useful box" and it's one of their biggest ones that come in a pack of 3 with two other boxes. Bought it for £60. The place to buy anything such as a wheel would be online, managed to grab one that's 22cm and is perfect for my hamster. He has 709 square inch of space which is perfect. Going out to the pet shop tomorrow though to buy a few little more bits for my hamster perhaps. Although I'm pretty much set on toys and stuff since I got a nice bundle of toys this morning and a big 15kg pack of kids sand for a sand bath. But, seeing all these hamster videos by Munchie and Victoria Raechel it makes me feel so guilty knowing I neglected my first hamster as a kid 11 years ago when I was 9. I've been banned from owning hamsters since that first time back all those years ago because apparently it "smelt", though I guess because I was a kid I didn't bother to clean the hamster and I don't think my family member whoever cleaned her at the time was doing a good job. I've now had my current hamster just over 2 weeks now and still no smell except wood smell from the burrowing depth he has. Have about 10cm of burrowing.

I have a female Syrian hamster and I got a 20 gallon long when I thought 360 was the minimum but yeah... my parents would not allow me to get anything wider to I had to get/make a topper. So my tank topper is another 20 gallon long tank with a hole drilled in the corner so she she won’t just fall off a ledge. As of now the top layer is sand and has her water bowl a wooden nite angel hide her food bowl and the bottom layer has the all living things bedding at least 6+ inches of bedding a bendy bridge curved as a hide a half log a ladder to the top and a home made multi chamber hide and there are willow and apple sticks scattered and buried in the bedding and I sprinkle herbs when I clean the cage and I feed the menu diet mixed with oxbow pellets and a 21% protein lab block and I’m working on trading the oxbow and menu for the sunburst hamster diet and also give the lab blocks. As treats I give my hamster sun flower seeds gerber puffs whimzees oat sprays and millet and I don’t feed treats too often I can’t rehome my hamster because my parents won’t let me so just please let me know what you think and also if I left anything out feel free to ask me any questions. So can females not be longhaired? I'm slightly confused now
@DamonNomad823 жыл бұрын
The answer to that question is a genetic one, which means it's complicated, but here goes: Female hamsters are much less likely to have super long hair like the male hamsters in this video, because the trait is linked to the X chromosomes. Traits like that usually only show up in males, because they only have 1 X chromosome, while females have 2 X chromosomes and the second one tends to mask traits that are on the first one. For a female hamster with long hair, she would have to have 2 copies of the gene, 1 from each parent. For males, they only need to have 1 copy of the gene. To sum up: it's theoretically possible to get long-haired females, but they are much rarer due to genetics.

The camera also changes warmth depending on the white balance but now I'm holding a piece of paper everytime I set up, so I can get the correct white balance since auto isn't ideal. Secondary my hair usually changes the skin tone or the lipstick which I'm still trying to figure out which tones do well for cool tone skin. Some hair colors really wash me out, but I dye my own hair and find out the results afterwords. I believe this copper hair is a warm tone, but usually I stick to cool tones. But I can confirm it's thanks to my recent attempts to fix my camera issues, that I lowered my shutter speed and aperture. I did lower the iso down but that only fixed the grain I was getting in the video. I'm also tweaking it depending on how far away the lights are. My issue I have is with my camera view finder. It's always much darker than tma computer screen so my mistake before I was making, was that I thought It was too dark and I just kept flipping buttons around till it got brighter. Now I'm finally understanding the "world of photography" as one may say. Hopefully this makes sense a bit. Edit in: also ty for the kind words. Blonde is a possibility, but I'm trying to get my ass to brown so I can turn into green again. 🟩

I asked one of the people who shows a bunch of hamsters on a channel in Japanese where do you get all those hamsters and they said I breed them at home. I had a suspicion that the Japanese were doing this. No wonder they have such a large number of dwarves in one place without fighting. The closest I've seen to fighting was when they were given a millet spray and there was such a large number of hamsters not everyone was able to get a bite at the same time. I heard an awful lot of squeaking in the video.

Can you do a cage review on this $200 huge ass cage off Amazon? I bought it for my hamster and it broke within the month.

No. They eat it

@@kohlenhydrat2665 I know but she said in a video that she didn’t want the food because it has hay in it
@MunchiesPlace3 жыл бұрын
Hay is safe for gerbils as they use it to grind their teeth and carry it for nesting material. Hay contains fiber but gerbils don't eat a fiber diet. They are a protein based diet. Please be aware some hay types may cause some gerbils to have an allergic reaction. It's uncommon but the rescue has gus-gus and jaq who couldn't have hay due to allergies from it. Thankfully they were adopted to a home who also had a hay allergy and said they wouldn't be using hay anyways.

Rats have very different care needs, and I actually live in the same area as munchie and we have a few people rescuing rats here, rats are a super popular pet over here and all the people I've met who have them had proper care!

@@dylanwigginss8168 yeah i know that she said that but I'm going for the German minimum as in germany there are the best cages and the best care. I believe every care should be like germany so I'm sharing my opinion on those small cages for gerbils. Mine have also shown stress in their 20 gallon tank and they couldn't really burrow, so i upgraded to a 40 gallon tank and now they are happy and are burrowing 24/7

I have a co-worker at Petco that sells this set up (but 20 long) CONSTANTLY and I cannot get her to do better because "no one wants a 40 breeder" You won't know if you don't TRY AHHHHH
@MunchiesPlace3 жыл бұрын
As someone who had to do this for years, ive given the customer all my information including links to the California Hamster Association and ontario hamster club and people say they "rather get the 20 now and then think about a 40 later". Honestly they are speaking the truth in most cases. Unfortunately you just gotta let them run with the information and try your best. 🤞

@@MunchiesPlace I don't really have that hard of a time when I show them the enrichment items they need, and explain their wild range and such. If they don't want to go the the 40B, I show them bin cages. It's not hard. It's just that my coworker keeps hers in 20 long and she thinks it's sufficient. And I know you know the struggle, being an ex co-worker hahaha 😂

I honestly cannot understand how people can confuse male hamsters with females, like their balls take up half their body lol
@MunchiesPlace3 жыл бұрын
Males can retract their balls and in smaller underdeveloped males, it may be much harder to tell. However the people said "they don't remember" if the store gave them this information or they just assumed without double checking. I made sure to ask them before assuming it was the stores fault. So we can't deny or prove it was.

15 years ago when I got hamsters with my siblings, we didn’t realize that our second female Syrian was actually male until we saw him mounting the other hamster. I actually had assumed that his “vulva” was swollen due to going into heat or something. Lmao We didn’t think to check ourselves, because we assumed the pet store would have them sorted correctly.

Starfire is a foster fail but due to medical. So technically yes Carlos is the only personal pet I got. Banana who's only been spoken of on IG, is another foster fail but it's due to him being a complicated Brachycephalic hamster.
