I'm sure someone has mentioned this but when the Church (the organization, not the individual church) decommission's a building of worship, they pull everything that's a part of worship, like the stained glass, which they usually replace with regular glass so they could either use, lease or sell the building. Images of worship, that can't be removed, like the painting on the ceiling, are either painted over or defaced to prevent desecration. FYI - The Catholic Church has had to close tons of small parishes in the U.S. (well, everywhere else, too) due to a lack of Priests who aren't doing jail time. These churches and rectories (the provided house for the Priest to live in) are small but even with the religious stuff removed, beautiful little places and generally left alone because the locals still have respect for the history. If you ask a local for permission, particularly in the Midwest, they might even go with you and show you the good stuff along with the all the history & rumors about the place.

A really neat find. The church is technically (biblically) the people (congregation) and the church building is just simply a building. Nothing holy about the structure itself. 😊

The problem with removing pipe organs is they require a lot of space to store and very few people/companies have the expertise to move them without damaging them. Unless you have a Church or other facility that wants it, it's just not financially feasibly to bother with them. It's a shame tho, as nothing sounds as good as a good old fashioned pipe organ played by someone who knows what they are doing.
@milotmediaco
@milotmediaco 4 жыл бұрын
Technically it is not a church anymore. It has been deconsecrated (thats why there are no crosses and faces scratched out). Deconsecrated = also called secularization, is the act of removing a religious blessing from something that had been previously consecrated by a minister or priest of that religion.

@jonnygrey3497

@@FurthermoreJack - Every sect is a bit different and I don't pretend to know the exact regulations for every denomination but in the church I grew up in(Dutch Reformed) a cross that is painted on or etched into something is not consider a religious icon by itself and doesn't need to be removed for deconsecration. If the cross is a physical structure(like on top of a steeple or hanging from a wall in my church's case) or is a statue or so forth then it's consider an icon because it's a significant ritual object on it's own but a cross that's painted on something else is just a letter "t" if the religious connotations are removed from the object it's on. I don't know about this case, maybe it wasn't even an official deconsecration and someone did it of their own accord, but the removing of faces from religious murals(particularly depictions of Jesus) is a common part of deconsecration.

They have to remove all the religious iconography. They are not allowed to leave it behind by order of the higher ups is what I have heard. If it can't be removed it must be made unrecognizable as an effigy.

@@tanyadebeer4836 it's a Catholic Church thing. The church as a whole like the Vatican owns the art and commissions the art work like these frescos so instead of leaving them behind there is some religious reason and it boils down to they are mine and you shaint look at them or defile them...but they destroy them instead of leaving them...I saw it in a documentary a long while ago.

When a church adds an organ its usually there forever. I specialize in moving pianos and organs and in 27yrs Ive only ever taken 1 out of an abandoned church and placed the parts and pieces into storage. Dont know whatever became of it, but thats the only 1 aside from smaller personal organs that you can purchase for your home like a regular piano.

This was very interesting, and beautifully filmed and edited Robb. Thank you for showing the details and the little things so many miss. The small storage and preparation room is called The Sacristy, as I recall. The sand was placed in the bottom of the censers to diffuse heat from the charcoal used on top of the sand to burn incense...once they had passed from the entrance to the Altar, the sand prevented burn marks from marring the Altar once the censer was set down.the basement is so sad, but Nature will take back what we fail to be diligent in our care of. Wishing you the best in this new decade, health, happiness, love, and light.🖤🇨🇦

About pipe organs, they are fussy and sensitive to temperatures. Breaks my heart it's not at least taken out for someone to even look at. My brother had one of those horses back in the 50s. Complete with cowboy hat, holster, cap gun, the works! 😂 My son,who is 18 now, rode that thing at my mamas house when he was little too. I watched him and his cousins ride so hard the nose hit the ground in front when they went forward and the tail hit the back. How that thing didn't tip over is a miracle to me! (I have pictures) Anyway I have loved learning about the beautiful church from all of you! I absolutely love learning about different religions from people, firsthand and I have a couple of questions if that's ok.....1: Would that be a Catholic Church and 2: where the heck would the choir be? I'm sorry for the long comment. Forgive me (and I'm not being funny here) TY
@karafuller3033
@karafuller3033 4 жыл бұрын
It was probably a Catholic church, based on the design and that they had Mass cards lying around. The choir would be up in the choir loft (where the organ was.) This was so the sound of their singing would travel well and be easily heard throughout the congregational space. It probably gave an ethereal effect--being heard and not seen.

This appears to have been a beautiful little church, and it is so sad to see it is abandoned. The organ is awesome and would have produced such beautiful music. Love pipe organ music. I can't begin to imagine why the faces were rubbed out on the ceiling mural. I wish someone would come and bring this church back to life in some way. I hope you have a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Pipe organs are built on site.I had the amazing oportunity to work as a assistant /aide to a man that built pipe organs.I traveled with him for nearly 2 years helping him to re visit the instruments he built and tuned to perfection. He was met and treated like royalty by The Catholic churches that housed one of his creations.( think of a chapel interior as a big speaker box and the organ and its components as one really really bad ass subwoofer. The abandonment of one of these suckers is a pitiful waste.The console is re usable but whats left is mostly hand made and tuned to the building...

Typically those old organs require a ton of maintenance. Their sound is amazing, unique, and certainly perfect in an old building like that. But they're complex, massive and don't assimilate well into a new building. That thing is a relic, and as Indiana Jones would say, it belongs in a museum! 😁

Unless that parish simply disbanded completely, your tour of the basement explained why the building was abandoned. It would have been far too expensive to shore-up and stabilize the building. Clearly the "Stations of the Cross" had been removed from the walls of the sanctuary. However, whether the congregation left for a newer building or simply ceased to exist, why didn't they sell or donate the pews, hymnals, and awesome light fixtures? Another smaller church would have welcomed all of those items. I just never understand why things are left behind when they could be reused, donated, or sold.

Right there with ya! The hardest part of watching all of these abandoned building explores is not constantly screaming,"why hasn't anyone DONE anything with this stuff" 100 times per video. In some ways it’s A shame I feel in establishment like this is abandoned but this is proof I believe that sometimes people take things too far and they take their religion too far and this is what happens you get a bunch of establishments that no longer are in service. Why you can create establishments for worshiping something but never be able to keep them functioning forever and then just abandoning them it’s beyond me.

If the church took all the art and things, why didn't they donate the books in the pews, and the pews and anything that is usable? Such a waste on the church's part, to not make sure everything that was usable got taken care of. Too bad someone couldn't convert this into shelter for the homeless. It would be a good thing.

Crazy cool little church. The ”napkins” are called vestment cloths. That organ itself is prolly worth a cool half million. How they tune an organ it to take each individual section of pipes, heat them and make adjustments to were the sounds comes out. I also think that the squares were mosques of Greek Orthodox.

It's possible that the altar was the first thing removed, along with the baptismal font, but I'm with you: that organ should've been taken somewhere where it would be safe, especially since it doesn't look damaged in any way. I've heard of organs being moved from one church to another and even church organs bought by private parties, so I don't understand why it's still there. Nice church, not too large, not too small. I suppose the damage under the basement floor explains why it's been abandoned.

A lot of churches remove their organs nowadays since they aren’t really used anymore and then just give them away or sell them. I think the congregation aged and dwindled until there was no money for maintenance or paying a pastor. Churches die that way.

Thank you! We appreciate anyone that enjoys seeing us together, but this channel only makes enough money to employ one of us as of now and since I worked for myself it was easier for me to take the risk for us and leave Kristy in a great job until we can be together all the time. Someday soon hopefully, i miss her also

I'm guessing they sold all the stain glass windows. Alot of churches do this after they close. We had two close in the city I live in and they sold them. Have a great 2020 my guy.

All that stuff was probably removed when they unconsecrated the building. the rectangles on the walls would have been the stations of the cross. The little room, in back, is called the Sacristy, when the priest dresses for mass and prepares the communion stuff. The artwork was probably altered to prevent desecration. Who would want Jesus looking down on a satanic ritual!

Defiantly a Catholic Church. It creep me out. The candles, holy water, ashes, robe, and all the things we're left disrespected. In an religion if something is used for ritual purposes, its suppose to be discarder is a respectful way. Cool place, just got bad vibes. Why were toys left or even there? Weird. ✌ out...Thanks 4 the video. Happy 2o2o !
