i cannot imagine how devastating it was for him to be hit with terminal diagnosis and discovery of the affair on the very same day. yet, he carried on with dignity and kept his head high despite all of it. and honestly? it was probably the best revenge on his ex anyone could ask for. if he raged, abused or threatened her then she'd have another reason to justify her unfaithfulness. if he tried to win her back or acted on his anger, it'd just feed her ego. the most devastating blow to a narcissist is to make it completely clear you don't care about them. they build their entire worth and sense of self around other people's attention and approval. once you take it away - there's nothing left. they will never really recover from it and will always remember it as a personal failure.

Maybe not. I've kept company to someone with a terminal condition. It was part selfish and part for them. Though it was never sexual. There's an odd peace of connecting with someone you know won't be around for long, and they always have a calming and understanding personality. You know they won't be around long, so any memory you have with them is so vivid. And as morbid as it sounds, you feel more open. Because you know they won't use it against you, and that a part of them just doesn't care. They have bigger worries. Being around someone terminal is a feeling you don't really understand until you are. Your problems seem so inconsequential when you are with them that you want to be. Their focused on enjoying the little things, and it gives you an appreciation for things you've never thought about. It also gives a peace of mind that that that person is safe. You don't have to worry because they are right in front of you. Especially as their condition gets worse.

I watched my grandfather fight the same cancer. Good for OP for refusing treatment. My grandfather was an army man (lied about his age to get into WW2, but since he was a genius and spoke 3 languages they kept him). So being a army career man he fought tooth and nail. But all that treatment did was make him suffer. Shame on the doctors for even doing that to an old dieing veteran. They knew the chances of his survival but were all too happy to make a profit. If you find yourself with the same type of cancer, please, don't let your family watch you suffer. My image of my grandfather went from a nazi fighting hero to a crying old man begging for death.
@BaeBunni11 ай бұрын
The problem is families can be to focused on tomorrow rather than today. Yea it would be nice if grandpa was alive tomorrow but watching him suffer for that today, rather than just enjoying how much time he has left isn't worth it. Enjoy today rather than hoping for tomorrow.
@tsunasawada679211 ай бұрын
I've loved the quote "Tomorrow is a hope, never a promise" From a character that symbolizes death. Enjoy the now instead of hoping for a tomorrow. Also if you are planning a treatment, its better to get a second opinion, they will tell you you're odds better than a person selling false hope.

Doctors don’t make more money from getting extra patients, they give treatment options and try to abide by the patient’s wishes. Of course there are bad doctors out there, but you shouldn’t shame doctors for doing their job. A lot of the modern issues stem from the medical system as a whole and not from individuals, as medicine nowadays is much more focused on treatment than it is prevention. That’s not any sole doctor’s fault, and they shouldn’t be blamed when people inevitably suffer when something doesn’t end up working out

Having stage 4 cancer usually means you should get ready to enjoy your last moments. Which is understandable for op. Prolonging his life for a stage 4 cancer treatment requires a miracle. Organ transplants isn't going to cut it. Stage 4 cancer will spread to other areas of the body. Kinda like a rebel force, appearing in one area slowly growing once they are ready take over other areas, consuming a nation in violence and chaos.
@generallyuseless58218 ай бұрын
Not necessarily. One of my moms has stage 4 bone cancer. She was originally told she'd have 5 years at most, and a year if the cancer resisted treatment. But she went into remission. She will be on chemo the rest of her life, but today it's been 7 years since her diagnosis, and things are still looking good. One woman at the chemo center she goes to has been on her treatment for 15 years. It's a terrifying and painful thing to go through. But stage 4 doesn't mean all hope is lost.
@penguinpingu38078 ай бұрын
@@generallyuseless5821 congratulations that your mom have beat cancer. Her determination to live is strong! You should be very proud! However realistically it usually does mean you should prepare. It's practically almost impossible to beat. You destroyed one area and they will pop out in other areas. Because not everyone is willing to take chemo forever. Only the luckiest or people with the strongest of wills is able to beat stage 4. But I think your example is good and inspiring, that it's not impossible to beat. Even if 99% of patients die there's still that 1% that will be triumphant. That's why I always respect cancer survivors and medical staff.

The final update: To my father's Reddit family, We have rung in 2024. This will be the first year of my life without my father. And that weighs heavy on me. I wanted to stop in and give you all an update on my father's family. You all already know that we celebrated our week long celebration of the holidays that my father so cherished. While bitter sweet, the week was very good. Dad has succeeded in bonding us all as a family, and that included Carol. Her romantic, for lack of a better word, time with my father when he needed the most, means so much to us. He left us all letters for this year, and one final present for each of us. They were thoughtful and brought us to tears. One last act that he entrusted Carol. Though I expect that there are letters for the grandkids at all of their major events. The first one came about at last spring's high school graduation. The home building is progressing. This year I started to realize what dad loved about this farm. The cycles of the seasons. The cycle of life that is present here. I understand a bit more about his decisions last year. While I still don't agree, I better understand. I have also started watching the sunrises and sunsets at Dad's spots. Not as religiously as he did at the end, but just another anchor between him and me. Jane's life has not gone well. In the fall she suffered a stroke. It was caught early enough and she survived. She is currently still in a care center doing rehab. She has regained rudimentary speech, but it is still tough for her. She is still working on walking again. She has a very long road ahead of her. Her health issues have gained her a bit of sympathy from her social circles. Even Mom and Steve as well as Dad's grandkids have put aside their hurt and pain and locked in on her l am not that charitable as of now and may never be. I do not have much information on the AP. He has disappeared from my business circles. The only morsel I have is that the company did receive an inquiry letter from a bankruptcy law firm. So far we have not seen any official filings. As for the company, without his leadership and financial anchor, the company is in the black and we got the debt manageable and did give every employee a nice bonus. I want to thank all of you again for what you did for my father. I am sorry for not responding to any DMs or responding to any comments. It has been difficult enough to just give these updates. And I expect this update to be my last. You all have my gratitude. throwaway SwanSong's daughter

All I can say is that those of us who were fortunate to be in our teens and 20s back in the 80s had the time of our lives. The world was much chiller back then, the music was amazing as was the party scene, and people weren’t such judgmental $&@holes like they are now. Literal heaven for me would be returning to 1985 / 1986. Hopefully your dad’s up there rocking out to the 2 absolute best years of music in human history. 🙂

I've sat and watched my great grandmother deteriorated, from 2014- early 2020. I understand that daughter's rage at the hospital, I understand wanting to make it go on longer, but I also learned that you can't fight for someone all the time. You can only fight when they ask you to. Op's decision to accept his fate is one I think we should all come to terms with. Besides at a point like that with something that is essentially un-curable (stage 4 cancer of the pancreas), it's easier to accept when it's time. Only criticism bro should have embraced Carol even if it would be short lived she knew what it was and still supported him. RIP op

Wakes up in the ER. "Hey! I have a 'Do Not Resuscitate' order in my medical charts!" Nurse: "But Sir, that only applies if you DIE. All YOU did was pass out for a few hours. You MIGHT have died, if you'd been left alone another hour or so, but as it stands you didn't even go into a coma." "...Damn you, semantics! Sheer sophistry, that! ...Fine! What do I have to do to get a 'Just Let 'Im Die!' order, instead?"

I'm pretty sure that there was a final update to this story by his son using the account to notify that OP had passed away the day prior and thanked the community for all the messages and for supporting his Dad.

"Since I bought the farm." I thought that's what you were ABOUT to do? ...Oh, right. ...Seriously, though, when did that become a euphemism for death? And how? And why?

The open ending broke me man. I fuckin’ knew it was coming before his own family, had it condensed down into less than an hour of my life, and still, regardless of all of that, this fucking broke me when it just went from a beautifully tragic telling of a simple man, (aka. What “The legends” really are) him in the hospital having closure himself for his life experience and then cut to black. We not ok out here as humans man, we are not fucking ok. The bad ones do get theirs for their evil ways, but man, the good ones still get done dirty asf by the evilness inside those people and that kills me.

The living wake 29:45 is great idea if have the chance. My mother in law had one, and my wife due to health experience was with her until the end. It was sad but everyone got time with her as she was a very family oriented person and gave her peace at the end

sadly he passed away, on the bright side it was due to a heart attack in his sleep and not his cancer so i guess you can look at as he didn't suffer.

It's a shame OP was on borrowed time when posting, he seemed like a decent enough guy. I hope he had peace in his last days and his family was left with harmony after his passing.
