Interestingly, the PAK DA has already entered the world of fiction - I was reading "Arctic Storm Rising" by Dale Brown, which involves a prototype being stolen by a rouge Russian guy and flying it to remote Alaska for ransom, where the American guys hunt it down. That book deliberately left the small features of the bomber ambiguous in a way that when the actual bomber comes out, it will fit right in. It's a really good read.

Dale Brown's 'Night of the Hawk' also features a stealth bomber, a Belarussian one, built in Lithuania with the help of a brainwashed 'Old Dog' crew member, Dave Luger. One of his best. The books Dale Brown published before 2000 were all pretty solid in plausible near-future tech, the plots and the writing were (still) quite good. His dialogues were never masterpieces, but sufficient in techno-thrillers. After 'Battle Born', imo, the quality crashed from just a 'still enjoyable' into 'annoyingly cringeworthy recycled waste of time'. To his defense, Brown recycled mainly his own original plot ideas. And it is hard to connect a futuristic strategic strike force to a post 9/11 real-world, dominated by headlines about the war on terror and on low-tech insurgents, in which air strikes usually aren't solving the big problems. Which is the Dale Brown trope: problems caused by bad guys to US, difficult high tech air strike solves the problems (despite US leadership having forbidden the strike). Also, a noticeable read is his 'Storming Heaven' from 1994, in which a terrorist mastermind has passenger planes crashing into airports, threatening to do the same to industrial, military and political objects. It also contains, quite prophetically, the inception of something like Homeland Security. In Brown's fiction that solved the terrorist problem. In the real-world however, it was just part of a new chapter in the conflict.

@@dalelumina3 That’s partly because the US ordered so few of them, so the cost per unit exploded. The B 21 raider is *significantly* less expensive than that to both purchase and maintain. But the raider is cheaper in large part because of lessons learned from earlier stealth platforms that have brought down cost with time, whereas this is Russia’s first foray into the space so… Who knows.

Russia's strategy does not presuppose a preemptive strike or an attack on Nuclear states. In this regard, we do not need stealth very much. Of course, it is good if the plane is visible from a shorter distance, but in general it is not critical. There is no real stealth aircraft in our world. It all depends on the radar and the range. But what we really need is that the aircraft in full combat load could fly 11 time zones without refueling. At the same time, it should have a good speed (more than that of the tu160) and load capacity, as well as a mode of operation from -50 to +50. In addition, our strategists assume that such an aircraft will be used on duty, which means that in addition to high speed, it should also have a very economical speed that keeps it in the air as long as possible. So, I am sure, the New bomber will not have Stealth but low visibility for radars, but it will have a wide range of speeds and perhaps the high-altitude ceiling will be space (60+ km). I think so

Great comment, Яков Фоминых, most civilians don't realize that different countries have different requirements based on many different factors, including, but not limited to, their geography, their strategy, their environment, and their production ability. They think if aircraft A doesn't have similar performance characteristics to aircraft B, then the country that produced aircraft A got it wrong. This isn't true, they just had a different set of requirements.

"Russia's strategy does not presuppose a preemptive strike or an attack on Nuclear state" this has dated and looks quite ridiculous. Russia liberally threatens nuclear war even against small states as small as Estonia as part of its oppressive and arrogant 'zone of influence' imperialism policies. All of Russia's attacks have begun Treacherously whether it was using the Naval Base at Sevastopol that Ukraine had leased to Russia or the Febuary 24th 2022 invasion of Ukraine. -Russia's policies have always involved denial and sneak attacks. Stealth is just a technology Russia hasn't mastered yet. -Being able to fly 11 time zones at speed is not important. 11 times zones is enough in reality such a large bomber wouldn't fly missions from the border. It would get destroyed by missiles if within 1 time zone of a border.

Nothing weird here. US stealth tech was indeed quite useless against Russian Army radars and their crews (not some export versions operated by God knows who). So Russia implemented different approach making planes with stealthiness being not a key future, but a way to reduce radar signature as much as possible without harming too much other parameters, which cant be said about F-117, F-35 and B-2. The exception here is S-70, but its a drone, so different story. About PAK-DA there is so few information, than its not even worth to speculate for now. It can continue in such a state for next 20 years. while Russia producing TU-160M2, or its work could be rushed in recent years following completely different design than shown in video.

Us 'Mericans say "eff one seventeen" for the F-117. When saying the numeric designation, we never say the number as a number. It's either "one seventeen" or sometimes "one one seven". I don't know why this is, but it's consistent across all fighters, bombers, and other aircraft. EDIT: Also, when saying the designations of Soviet (and now Russian) aircraft, MiG is "mig", SU is "ess you", TU is "tee you", Yak is "yack", etc. I think that we tend to say the acronym as a word if it's more than two letters long. First serial models on state tests now. Before to launch full scale serial production. Do you think it is long process? Okey. Let’s remember. First prototype of T-80 arrived in 1969, serial production launched in 1976 - 7 years later. But T-80 even not created from scratch and it was not so complicated. Another example, Germany and France several years agp promised to create own similar to T-14 tank and it will arrive in… 2035. They create it together because it is too complicated for each country alone. New tank, from scratch, first in own generation - it is not so fast as you can think. Russia built first prototype in 2015. In 2021 tank passed all state tests and accepted to army. In 2022 factory produced first tanks with serial technology. Now they again pass tests to confirm capabilities of factory and then serial production. So? And what about three new Russian class of nuclear strategic submarines, new ICBMs and SLBMs from scratch, S-400, S-500, Su-35 and Su-57, and so on, a lot of other weapons?)

The range maps you're showing are just a bit misleading because the earth is laid out flat... instead of like a sphere, as it normally would be. If the russians were to ever launch an attack on the US, they would probably fly over the north pole and through Canada, which is a much shorter route distance wise, and is probably the reason why the engines are rated to go in such cold temperatures. This has been the case since roughly the 1950's when ICBM's became a thing, where both countries realized the shortest route was over the north pole, not to fly over europe and across the atlantic ocean. Would be great if you could take more time to consider that in future videos.

Came here for the same comment. It's less than 10,000 km from Moscow to San Diego via direct polar route. Equally importantly bombers don't take off from Red Square, they could take off anywhere within Russian Borders, so the effective range is 12,000 km from the russian border. 9,000 km from Sochi to Cape town, 10,000 km from Vladisvostok to New Zealand. 12,000 km from Western Russia to Argentina. Basically everywhere in the world except the southern 1/3 of South America and Antarctica. Also,...12,000km one way nuclear strike vs 6,000km return flight ? Mid air refueling ? It appears I've gone full on pedantic over a map I suppose.

Just a tip, for your future forays... what you need is an ellipsoid shape that both allows the choking of mass and the broad expansion of exhaust gasses... circles were nice fifty years ago... what also helps is if you have inductive cooling to reduce the heat of those expanded gases quickly after the point of ejection so as not to create a massive plume... I mean, if we take at face value the kind of fuels that Russia uses to avoid frosting... that's a tall order... because usually, that exhaust is going to be fuel rich...

Good show. Makes me wonder if Russia's really going ahead with its development. Besides a few prototypes. My question is, with limited $$ & a much smaller economy than the US, China & some other countries, why invest in a 80's redesigned new bomber? With their Su57's serving as escorts & a new improved 80's designed bomber working in tandem should work 4 them. A lot cheaper & investing in stealth fighters is more advantageous 4 them than spending big $$ on a new stealth bomber. The stealth fighters can B used in different combat missions (losing its stealth in doing so) than a single purpose plane.

I'm sure the Russians will develop a beautiful airframe with a pile of hidden design compromises. And when all is said and done, they'll build one or two, show them off at an airshow or two, make sure there's an impressive flyover on parade day, and... that's about it. Considering their entire military budget was less than the Air Force's training budget (and that was before they crippled their own economy and made high tech parts impossible to purchase) I doubt building either of these is a priority. And if this propaganda plane is a priority - just think of all the better ways the Russians could have spent the money. In the words of Napoleon, never interrupt your enemy when they're making a mistake. Russia is making the same mistake they've been making for the last decade. Hilarious.

Russian ambitions: Grow to old USSR borders using conventional land warfare. Russian military: Invests most of their military budget in basically everything you don't need to fight a conventional land war. Dumb wonder weapons, an over the top nuclear arsenal (1/5th would be just as effective), bleeding edge next generation tech they'd never be able to produce in large enough quantities (SU-57, SU-75, T14), a large navy that's incredibly expensive to maintain. Tens of billions utterly wasted. Even before it's stolen by the kleptocratic-elite. All that, while the worst equipped guys on the ground literally get WWI era equipment...

Our budget is enough to drive submarines to your shore and sink 90% of your infrastructure according to the Sakharov plan, do not worry about it, my beloved. Kiss kiss

Great video, great content, but I gotta say: even when these Russian prototypes are flying in the sky, their attributes are generally *wildly* exaggerated.

No they don't, otherwise they would be building things like the Raider, F35, F22... but Russia isn't, they build junk and then claim it does things it isn't capable of, for example the SU-35 - now proven to be expensive garbage easily shot down using MANPADS. Stealth my back end.
