I just ordered by first Sailor Z nib, and am thinking of ordering a Platinum C. So this has been very helpful. My first recent experience with a Pelikan M nib, made me realise that although JoWo B often felt clunky, I am enjoying some broader nibs as they show off the ink better, and, interestingly, made my hand writing tidier! So now, I finally get Gourmet Pens and her love for the extra broads! Thank you for this!

Thank you! This was such a useful comparison. I also have both Sailor and Platinum pens and give the edge to Sailor. They're such a pleasure to write with. I'm so glad you also talked about feedback. The Sailor feedback is something I actually really enjoy as touching another of the five senses, though I realize others may disagree. As with most writing instruments, "Your milage may vary!."

I love them both.. but between these two nibs, the Platinum C nib is my favourite. But I prefer the Sailor pen body because they make so many colourful SE pens. And they always have the Zoom and Music nib option in their progear models. So the Platinum C nib on a Sailor PG would be my dream 😄.. I would like to have your opinion on each brands Music nibs as well. I don’t know if you have already made a comparison video. İf not: maybe it’s an idea for the future? Great video as always 💜

Found a Sailor 1911 standard 21k in maroon and gold with zoom for 121 on amazon. I am an EF- UEF- PO nib fan but find I like stubs and this zoom might be what I am looking for. I need a wet pen for shimmer inks and kana practice this could be it. If I dont like the nib I might have it ground to an architect but will wait 1 year. I dont have an issue using sailor fude pens so this should be a fun experiment.

Nice video as usual, but ... I have a Platinum 3776 C nib, and when you flip it over it writes in a F-M size, but doesn’t run dry at all, as most upside down nibs do. My first Platinum fountain pen. It’s a little scratchy upside down. A close look at the nib, and it appears to have a flat side of sorts on top of the nib. Did Platinum grind it this way so it’s really two separate nibs in one? I don’t know, but it really does work as two separate nibs. Great fountain pen IMO. The normal side on nib, wet, and smooth.... . 👍

That's an all around accurate assessment of both nibs, in my experience. I'd love to see either or both of these compared to the Pelikan M800 3B(and BB, if you happen to have one); specifically the 800, not the 1000. I requested the same comparison of Stephen in the comments section of his "Ask The Doctor" series earlier today. Have you ever had a chance to try Pilot's #15 coarse nib? I'm not sure if this holds true across a sample size of thousands of nibs, but my Pilot #15 coarse is a bit wider still than the two Platinums I own, and softer and wetter too.

I will add this to my list! I have not used the Pilot 15 C nib though.

I enjoyed the comparison of the 2 pens. I would say though it would be better closer comparison if you had used a platinum president pen in BB with an 18kt nib and a more camparible price point. I love your writing skills. ✍

Terrific video. Thank you! I’m poised to pick up a Sailor Pro Gear, and I like a nice thick line of wet ink. I assume the Zoom nib is a step up/thicker than Sailor’s Broad nib, but otherwise a similar writing experience?

Of the six Sailor nibs I have four are scratchy. But the way the tipping is done they all have a bit of a zoom nib effect and thickness of the line changes with the writing angle. I think Sailor nibs are really meant for Kanji and not so good for cursive
@murkser41492 жыл бұрын
As someone who writes cursive all the time and loves Sailor nibs I have to disagree with you. And it's highly unlikely that all of your nibs are "scratchy". They are designed to be this way, it's called feedback. If you don't like it then maybe Sailor isn't the right brand for you.
@alexmood64072 жыл бұрын
@@murkser4149 I consider it feedback when there is consistent vibration when nib is dragged on paper. That is actually pleasant and I prefer nibs with feedback. When feedback is changing depending on the line directions and nib rotation I cal it scratchy.

And the sailor 14k zoom? Are there many differences from the 21k?
@gourmetpens4 жыл бұрын
Not really. It's mostly that the 14kt is a smaller nib. They "feel" very much the same but they are on the smaller pens - the Pro Gear Slim/1911Standard instead of the full size versions so that alone can give a different in-hand feeling.

Can the Platinum double broad or Sailor Zoom nibs be purchased ala cart or can they only be purchased with these pen models? In other words, can I get the platinum nib and put it on another platinum pen, or, is there a more reasonably priced platinum model that I can get the double broad nib on? Thanks for the comparison!

@sistergoldenhair07274 жыл бұрын
I would never write with a high angle. I wouldn’t change my handwriting to support a nib size. It should be the other way around, but I’m intrigued by the double broad on the platinum 3776 so I used your link to buy one;)
@arcfide4 жыл бұрын
The main place where I think one can justify writing at the high angle is when you want a single pen for "juicy notebook" writing and "fine planner" writing. If you have a Japanese planner, there is often very little space and you want to fit a lot of data in that small space. Something like a Zoom nib would let you fill out most planners using the high angle more meticulously without requiring a separate nib for regular writing if you preferred a broad nib for that. In my case, I often use the backside of a board Sailor nib, or I combine a Music nib with a UEF nib for platinum pens, but that requires two pens, instead of just having one pen that can do both things.
@gourmetpens4 жыл бұрын
Excellent explanation! Yep. It's one of my go-to one size fits all nibs.

Thanks for the comparison. I wish you would have shown "reverse writing" (upside-down) especially for the Zoom nib. It seems more plausible and less fatiguing for anybody to use the pen upside-down than at a perpendicular to the page angle over a long period of time.
@gourmetpens4 жыл бұрын
I have a few zoom nibs and have found they work well in reverse but the BB/C nib less so overall. Easy to have a nibmeister tune them up for you to reverse write :)
@lukaszpokoju4 жыл бұрын
@@gourmetpens Thanks for your testimony, I'm ambivalent about getting a zoom nib on y next sailor pen, the option to have a very fine nib in reverse is paramount for me.
@sistergoldenhair07274 жыл бұрын
Why would anyone write at such a high angle?
@gourmetpens4 жыл бұрын
Sometimes I have to write like this with regular nibs as well because I have weakness in my right hand. Sometimes that's the only way I can "hold on" to the pen. As for others, it's great for art and small writing when needed.
