I felt like the ending was symbolic. The puzzle was almost complete with only two pieces missing… representing the mum and daughter. The puzzle of addiction will never be completely resolved. It will be an ongoing puzzle which will need to be redone and reworked time and time again. The mum and daughter wrecking and restarting the puzzle in the closing scene seemed to reinforce this message.

I have a family member who is in recovery who wanted to watch this with me. Thank you for your honest review. As a recovering pill seeker, trying to help others is very serious to me. You are 100% right about too many side stories. I would do just what you said, If you want me to help, you give me the phone, and where you go I go-in this house-do not close a door, I will come in. I like seeing redemption stories, but this seems beyond what anyone who has been there/done that would do. Thanks for saving me the time.

Recovering heroin addict here 08/16/2019, and I personally got that big ass needle stuck in my 🍑 and I know a few other recovering addicts that are on vivitrol as well, I personally didn’t feel like I needed it or want it, but it does actually help! But my sister got this movie on Amazon prime videos and I can’t wait to watch it! And whoever is struggling out there, there is a better life out there, please reach out when YOU ARE READY! It is not easy, but so worth it 🤍

I seen this movie and it's fantastic. They made Mila look really rough at first I thought she was really sick with something but it's studio make-up. They way they treated her in the ER is infuriating and her mother is amazing for speaking up for her. Anyway this movie hits me in the feels and so relatable. I'm an alcoholic and i put my poor mother through HELL. We're very close. She said she had the same sleepless nights, cried, begged me to quit, many false promises, same mistakes-very relatable. My mother never gave up on me. I'm trying sobriety again. I have to learn to say no.

Ian it naloxone (or what ever you call it in America) thatbthere giving her. See, I’m a huge junky. I’m lucky enough to not be in active addiction right now (clean since 2017) and the thing is, I can’t watch stuff like this without noticing the technical inaccuracies. This movie could have been about me. I have a...difficult relationship with my Mum. And the thing I’ve realised over 5years of really hard work, is that stuff isn’t black and white. Not the bad person because I used drugs, and she’s not a good person because she didn’t. I spent my whole life believing I was a bad person, it’s not over, I still have to work hard everyday. But films like this reinforce the idea that most addicts have about themselves. Look at how hard her life is, how Much pain she’s in. Does any of that seem like a choice? I wish it was a choice to be an addict. I would have chosen not to be one a long time ago. Sorry for the rant. This is just something I feel really strongly about. Good video though, you two are really funny. And it’s called ‘precipitated withdrawal’ and it’s just....it’s horrific. Honestly I’d rather die than have to do it again.

A big problem I have with this movie is that she depended 100% on the shot. It’s like she didn’t even incorporate meetings or working the steps- you can take a shot all you want to from blocking you from getting your high but you have got to put in more work to be in recovery - and her mom Giving her her pee bc she had relapsed? Talk about enabling. And I also got that Glenn close was blaming everyone for her addiction but not the actual addict. As someone who was addicted to adderall, no one was responsible for my addiction except for MYSELF

I never did steps or meetings. Just been on suboxone 5 years now. My first try getting sober, too. Obviously this is not the norm, but not totally unrealistic.
@Autumn_Sunrise
@Autumn_Sunrise 3 жыл бұрын
@@caseyw.6550 It’s not unrealistic at all. You absolutely don’t need NA Meetings to get better, because no way is the “right” way. It’s about what works for the addict. The goal is staying alive and building a normal life. The goal isn’t to be told you must follow a specific book written by someone. I also didn’t do meetings, and I didn’t follow NA either. I’ve been taking Suboxone long term and will be my whole life because I also have chronic pain and can’t take painkillers. So it works for both for me. Sober 9 years now and it was my second try but first try utilizing Suboxone. I have nothing against NA because for some people that’s what works for them. That’s awesome. But I do have a problem with NA members shaming other addicts and telling them they can’t do it any other way, because it’s a harmful trope and not true whatsoever.

I think not living with a recovering addict makes your points valid. But honestly if you’ve gone through the recovery process with someone this movie makes way more sense. Mom and daughter at this point have a relationship that’s so broken it’s IMPOSSIBLE to get to the level of closeness we want. As a mother who’s gone through the process 10/20 times no I’m not gonna sit down and have a heart to heart with my daughter. I’m gonna act exactly like glen close because on the one hand I want to tie her to the bed, but on the other I also just want to be cautious and prepare for the inevitable relapse. Having worked with addicts this movie gives a really good presentation but it’s not for mass audiences that don’t understand that dynamic

The funny part is as someone who has tried to get clean at families houses this is what happens. Family memebers wanna get out of the house and do stuff and they think it'll be good for you so they drag you out and think they know best and get mad if you don't wanna go but really it just makes you relapse. You can't argue either cuz u a bum. I wished so many times to be locked up for a couple weeks and just let you die in bed to get thru it without before going places. The only thing worse then withdrawal is withdrawal at the grocery store and your mom wants to peruse the arts and crafts aisle and you are sick af but she wants you to be excited to help pick paint colors. Everyone being all peppy and talkative and you tryna not barf.. Lol It's ironic that you guys can figure out that the addict literally needs to just be watched and held up not be leaving and shit. Going to the store, church or seeing people is the last thing they need and it does not help there sobriety at all. Anyway good for her for staying clean while pregnant. I qas flip flopping before I got pregnant but I stopped too and stayed clean after finding out and Just celebrated 5 years clean this year. Amazing the strength having a baby can give♡

As an addict, while I understand the points being made, most of the complaints here from my experience that's how it is in real life. There is too much going on, you have to get stuff done you can't just sit in the room for several days doing nothing. There are needs that need to be met and it actually helps to be able to distract yourself from the mental struggle of what you're going through. I've been through trying to get medical help & the medical community treating me like sh** & making it actually harder to get clean & how frustrating it is to the family member(s) trying to help their addicted loved. All of it is very much so real. The only thing I don't like about the film is her relapsing, mom giving her the pee + her getting the shot & going into precipitative withdrawals. If she's at 4 days clean there should be options available to her right then and there. Her relapse is understandable and I didn't like how their goal was that antagonist shot. It shouldn't have been their goal. There are other options. She needed medication(s) that would make her not struggle or be sick and then take it from there in terms of seeing mental health psych etc and taking the small steps towards bettering her life. The school scene I feel was very necessary because it shows how society reacts to the problem of addiction and what addicts go through and how most people really have no true understanding or grasp of the problem or the people seeking help. It's so hard going through it genuinely wanting to get better and kick the addiction permanently yet everyone around you treats you as though you are doing nothing but lying and manipulating so that you can continue to get high. How hard it is to get off the drug even though the only thing you want in life at that point is to get off of it you just don't know how. It's not just "stop doing it," if it was, they wouldn't have to reach out to family & strangers alike for help in doing just that.

The film was brilliant! Keeps you entertained in full 2 hrs. To me, the only missing formula was the deserving gratitude the mother (Glenn Close, which portrait a mother astonishingly ) deserves, not restarting a god damn board puzzle. It shouldve been a big tight hug after what she put her Mother through, who also had her traumatic experience as to why she left. Imagine that missing hug, deb in the kitchen one night doing the dishes and she just hugged her...Niagara falls.

Precipitated withdrawal is when in active addiction you take something that is a stronger magnet to the brains receptors than opioids like buprenorphine. A lot of people think it's naloxone causing the reaction but it's not. Seen a lot of people go through it because they were not honest.. if you play you have to pay by feeling like shit for a couple days
@trinitron666
@trinitron666 6 ай бұрын
That isn't always true nor should it be true. This comment isn't even taking into consideration the addicts with severe/serious medical conditions that get worse from drug use and also from 'cold Turkey' drug withdrawal/detox. There are medications and sedatives out there that can be used temporarily to relieve the pain and suffering of an initial detox and people deserve that relief. You don't need to suffer. That's an archaic view that has ended the lives of many addicts who've tried and tried to recover.

She was thrown into precipitated withdrawals. Its like regular withdrawal on steroids and holding a sledgehammer that's just for you. Sadly I've been there a few times. If you don't wait til all your opiate receptors are clear the naloxone will erase all that's on there instantly and send you into precipitated withdrawals.

Nobody needed this movie. And I know that’s a cliche thing to say but just because something is based on a true story doesn’t mean it is necessary to make a film out of it. Mila can play a junkie. Great. She’s an actor. Glen’s character could have been played by anybody because the most she offers to this dynamic is bad hair. The writing and research that went into this movie felt so flimsy and uninspired. Everything else was just so watered down and badly written. One time do they show a meeting and it’s an ACA one. All they could offer in that scene were two slogans that are repeated constantly in AA. Anyone who is in AA knows the ones I’m referencing lol. The back story isn’t even necessary. I hear people keep saying that, but I really enjoyed Beautiful Boy, which provides barely any back story and is also based on a memoir, well two memoirs. But the writing was raw and authentic and seemed like a lot of preparation was done beforehand. This movie was just boring and contrived filled with cliches and bad writing.

They had to wait to get their teeth fixed. To prove themself to be accountable. You crawl then you walk is all I am saying and it took a week for this person to stop being so sick from withdrawal. This is the first time watching your channel and I’m not sure what atmosphere you guys promote but i think you guys missed the mark on this movie. Given that this movie does have some quirks, the essence of this movie is the endless love of a mother to a daughter, endless hope, and even the toxicity of any given toxic relationship wether people can change their ways, addiction or not. I can see that this movie does try to bite too much that it can chew but i feel like you guys have only talked about the small flawed details of the movie and not enough of the actual superb performance and the troublesome thematics in present day.

I wouldn't say superb performance but decent. As somebody that's been in recovery for years I noticed tis movie is flawed and I agree with their perspective that the movie should have been these two leads locked in the house together hashing it out. The mom was so on edge then drove her to a crack house and the school thing should have been left out and no way she should have ever given her daughter her pee and more. Decent movie just went off the rails with too much going on

And if she, Mila Kunis' character, (sorry if i spelt it wrong) was really detoxing from that many years she wouldn't be able to do anything or go anywhere at all.. she would be so sick that you would rather be dead... no joke the worst possible thing ever.. I have witnessed it too many times from someone who went through it. It is horrible.. people with that whole "they did it to themselves" are a piece of shit in my opinion.
