Take your blues playing to the next level with this piano and organ video lesson, in which I will first play and then dissect four blues licks. You will learn how to incorporate these licks into your own piano playing as I break them on screen with special captions for you to follow.
Although the current lesson will use an organ tone, the ideas can also be applied to the piano or almost any other sound (electric piano for example), so if you don't have the appropriate organ tone just follow along on your own keyboard of choice.
Now here is something very important every budding blues soloist should know: The trick for playing a successful blues solo involves learning a large number of licks, and then stringing them together seamlessly. Unlike jazz, blues relies on very complex licks incorporating double notes, triple notes, tremolos and many other dramatic devices which are very difficult to come up with on the fly as jazz musicians do. It is somewhat "cheating" but it is extremely useful and, well, works :). For those of you who want to learn more about my philosophy regarding improvisation in general, watch my video at:
• The Philosophy of Impr...
Blues Licks (From Wikipedia, at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lick_%28...
In popular music genres such as rock or jazz music, a lick is "a stock pattern or phrase" consisting of a short series of notes that is used in solos and melodic lines and accompaniment. Licks in rock and roll are often used through a formula, and variations technique in which variants of simple, stock ideas are blended and developed during the solo.
In a jazz band, a lick may be performed during an improvised solo, either during an accompanied solo chorus or during an unaccompanied solo break. Jazz licks are usually original short phrases which can be altered so that they can be used over a song's changing harmonic progressions.

I purchased a 100 year old player piano (minus the player parts) at Goodwill for like 80 bucks. It had four keys that didn't work at all and was seriously out of tune. So after fixing the broken keys, ordering a tuning kit, and learning to tune the thing I finally sat down to figure out how to play. Easier said than done. I hit a wall trying to learn on my own (a wall that I hadn't encountered when learning guitar, bass, or even lapslide). Then I found your KZbin posts. Thanks for the lessons, man. You've reinvigorated me and my passion to learn.

Great hearing that, James. I can only take partial credit: the passion always comes from the player, not the teacher.

MangoldProject I agree in fact when I teach I think of my self as a facilitator.. literally from Latin facilis.easy. it's up to teachers to make something easier. KISS. That's an acronym.. there's a joke told .. new pastor of a church was thinking he was really impressing his new congregation. His wife handed him a note. It said KISS. Misunderstanding the note he thought she was encouraging him. Afterwards she asked why didn't he cut it short and told him what the note meant. Keep it short stupid.. not very respectful but funny. Different versions of this abound.

I’m a classically trained musician and never really improvised before - only figured bass in baroque style. I recently had a gig where I needed to improvise- blues. Because of this single video, I was able to do so! Our song was in Eb, so I had some transposing to do, but it worked beautifully!! Thank you so much for making it so easy and concise!! Much appreciated!

Alternate way to play Lick #2: You can substitute the pivot root in the right hand for a 7th, two semitones lower. This will create a tritone feel when combined with a root in the left hand.

Winging It I've played guitar since I was 12 .. dad started me on the high e string. Years later a older gentleman taught me the Chet Atkin's style. Back in those days you figured out the licks by playing parts of records over and over again.. sometimes it helps to learn something on the guitar and transfer it to the piano. My guitar stays two foot away at night . Yeah I'm addicted to the music of guys like Jerry Reed.. I love to play the claw.

on the 4th scale it is also nice to harmonize the Eflat and Bflat when descending to give that thick harsher hit before reaching the G note. It works well in a triplet rhythm so C+Gflat-2-3-Eflat+Bflat-5-6. Nice video though thanks!
